Player Signing New Pats OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr

Reports also say Wheatley was a cut candidate so unless Strong wasn’t long for this team either (possible) it’s odd they’d swing a trade for a guy they could have had for free in a couple of days.
I suspect that JJ beat out Strong with his performances (other than the punt disaster) during the last two preseason games. Wheatley seems to move well for a very big man.

Dang, Andrew Callahan hailed it yesterday. Wheatley is 26 with no regular season experience, but he’s also a super late bloomer. In 2017, he was a little 265 pound TE at Michigan while Onwenu (already 350 pounds) and Stueber (319) were on the OL.
I read that article too, he was spot-on!

Read that he was a cut candidate in Cleveland. If true and the Patriots traded for him anyway then Strong had to be a cut candidate too. Otherwise why trade for him.
Reiff banged up, Anderson no where to be seen... we needed tackle depth... Harris and strong both suck, so why not deal one of the two to guarantee that you don't have to deal with the waiver wire in trying to get tackle depth

This tells me that they liked what they saw from JJ Taylor and had him and Strong relatively equal, so one wasn’t gonna make the roster. JJ made big strides this camp.
Yeah I think that played a big part in this trade other than the need for more OT depth.

I liked Strong’s upside so sad to see him go, but Wheatley is a good prospect at a position they’re extremely thin at.
Or they like Zeke. Maybe even still have plans for Ty Montgomery. And yes possibly a good sign for JJ. Whoever is third and even fourth it's pretty clear Strong wasn't it.

Tyrone Wheatley is an interesting prospect, a TE convert he was on the practice squad for the entirety of the 2022 season.

He played quite a bit throughout the first two preseason games and looked excellent. His footspeed and ability to consistently mirror edge rushers allowed him to stand out throughout training camp and in the preseason where he was touted by line coach Bill Callahan, who really knows what he’s talking about.

He was pushing for a depth spot on the active roster but the Brown’s were deep on offensive line and really thin at RB. This is a good trade that is potentially a win for both teams.

Patriots are 15th in the waiver claim order. They must have thought someone before them would claim him. Or, they were going to cut Strong anyway.
“Reports he was a cut candidate” is not the same thing as being cut. A team can’t make decisions based upon something like that.

6’6 290. Acquired from Cleveland for Pierre Strong.

Reports are he had a good preseason. Sounds good to me.

Are you sure about that 290 figure? Other sources, including Reiss, indicate that he is 320 lbs.

Or Kevin Harris.

He's never given up a sack in the NFL! Not a one.

He's a 2020 player, so no testing results.
Strong didn't show much in his time. Pats needed someone to spell Rhamondre last year, but couldn't rely on Strong.

Wheatley has bounced, man.
College at Michigan, then Stony Brook, then Morgan State as a tight end. That's a unique path. Total of nine receptions across three schools.
Picked up by Chicago, then Raiders, then Browns, and now Pats.
Didn't play tackle in college. Presumably athletic enough as a converted tight end.

He's tall, and has gained weight since college.
Pats sure avoided tackle in the draft, so they don't have a lot of developmental players in their system. They've drafted the hell out of interior line.
So here's a raw prospect at tackle. This is not the answer at starting right tackle.

Even if Reiff isn't seriously injured, with McDermott sliding down and Anderson MIA, they needed another OT. They gave Steuber every chance to prove himself and all he proved was that he wasn't ready for the NFL.

Brown, Strange, Onwenu, Andrews, Mafi, Sow, Reiff (if okay), and now Wheatley make 8. Have to think Ferentz if he backup center unless Andrews showed more than we saw in the games, so I'd guess Russey, Hines, McDermott, and Andrews on the PS.

I'm kind of bummed about losing Pierre Strong, though, but JJ deserves a spot just because he's so much fun to watch. If they keep four RBs, will it be Harris, Monty, or someone yet to be claimed, I wonder?

They said they drafted Sow as a Tackle, though. I think he's looked pretty good out there, considering how raw he is at that spot.

Bedard kicked around the idea that the Patriots might go with only 2 RB's on the initial 53.

If Reiff, Strange are out, and Onwenu is limited, could they be thinking of moving Sow over to guard for part of the opener? He has good push, and despite what this board claims, looks horrible in pass protection at the tackle spot. Like never going to get it type of horrible IMO.

This could be our starting right tackle on opening night.

I could still see any combo of Monty, JJ, Harris and someone off the street. I think it's probably JJ and Harris. But Ty is an x factor they seem to love him when he's healthy but he can't stay healthy.

We took 2 guys last year in the draft and now 2 camps later I'd like to think they just decided which of the 2 they like better but I'm not sure that's the case.
