In the last two days I have heard 3 media people use the word "arrogant" in describing BB.

Last night on NEST Alan Greenberg used it, Gary tanguay used it( but I don't know if he knows what he's saying half the time). Then this morning on WEEI, both John Dennis and Callahan used it.

I haven't seen it in print yet, but maybe some of you have.

It seems that that the main gripe that they have with BB is that he is not answering questions regarding Adam leaving. They want him to say if he was "surprised " or not. They want him to say if he made a "mistake" or not.

Let's say BB plays their game and admits tha he was "surprised" or under estimated the situation with Adam. Does that change anything?

So what! BB is not perfect and he does not handle every situation perfectly. Does it do any good to hold a press conference and say those things? It would only give the media something to blab about for a couple of weeks.

Tunescribe, I disagree.

Bill Belichick is like Howard Roark, that's all.

Here is my theory on BB: I think the man struggles with moderate to low-grade depression. Depressed people are not naturally gregarious, often are socially withdrawn, and exhibit behavior that may be construed as "arrogant" but is actually just the opposite. A lot of what I've seen in BB's public behavior -- press conferences, TV appearances, etc. -- suggest a man who must put extra effort into personal interaction that does not come to him naturally. BB is just not that good with "people" in general, but it's probably not his fault. He seems to have become more aware of this and made strides with it since his Cleveland days, but my sense is that he still struggles with it. He's also going through a divorce, by the way.

Did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

First, it is ridiculous to diagnose a disability from press conferences.

Second, it would only be applicable if he subscribed to your idea of the goals of a press conference. I think he does not. He is very protective of his football team. He manages the players on his team. He is smart enough that he will not be duped into saying something in a press conference he has not said directly, or that would create a question, or be seen as indirectly evaluating a player in a press conference. (i.e. the famous, some things were better than others.) He isnt going to talk about gameplan, assess players, give away his plan, etc. In other words his goal in a press conference is to not give them what they wish he would. How could you do that gregariously?

Third, I have heard of numerous occassions where IN THE RIGHT FORUM, BB has been desribed as very personable and greagrious. I dont know how you judge a person personality solely on instances where he understands he is going to be asked questions that he knows he doesnt want to answer, and at the same time must not come off as refusing to cooperate.

Sorry, I dont by your Mental Assessment From Afar.

OF COURSE BB IS ARROGANT.
It is a requirement of being as good as he is at what he does.

How can you be the guy who must make all of the decisions, have those decisions judge in the press, then judged on the field, and not be arrogant? If he questioned his own decision making ability he would never have gotten where he is. All this is even before considering his amazing success.

I have no doubt in my mind when I say this...

Bill Belichick doesn't give a 'RATS ASS' what the Boston media, anyone in the Boston media, or any other media for that matter, has to say or thinks about the way he handles himself or matters concerning the NE Patriots.

Robert Kraft's opinion and what's best for the NE Patriots are the only things BB must concern himself with as long as he's running the show.

Of course, it also doesnt bother me to have a pissed off BB at the helm if that did happen.

Its simple - he doesn't kiss the media's *ss. Period. And most of those pricks, who are among the most arrogant people on the planet, hate him for it. They don't get stuff spoonfed to them. Nick and Ron don't get favored nation status. They believe above everything that they, and what they think, is what's important in this city. And if somebody doesn't agree with that, they club them to death. Believe you me, if those jackoffs saw Tunescribe's post from earlier, they would be high fiving each other. Because that's exactly what they want. He doesn't make our jobs easy, so sic 'em. Blast him every chance we get. If you haven't seen countless examples of this occurring in Boston over your lifetime, then I don't know what the hell you've been watching.

Knowing what we know about the media (people like Mike, TE, and Chris excepted), don't you think being arrogant to them is a GREAT quality? Its one of the things I love the best about the guy.

As far as 'telling the fans what's going on', a friend said to me earlier today, you buy that season ticket, there's no guarantee of anything but a seat on Sunday. Hand holding and warm and fuzzies aren't part of the deal. You don't get to be part of a Fan Advisory Group or any other mastabatory horseh** that designed to make you 'feel' better. If you want that, then give up your tickets. Those seats won't be vacant for long. Because they win. Just in case you'd forgotten that.

BB has been being described as "arrogant" from before he went to Cleveland. It goes with the territory -- cliche him as geekish, obsessive, a football genius but not a "people person".

Well, it's clear that he's not someone who needs to make himself feel good by being best buddies with a bunch of journalists. Strikes me as a sign of ego strength (if you'll allow the psycho-babble). He's not a loner: he's known for having a lot of coaches/football people as his buddies -- particularly, younger ones such as Eric Mangini and Scott Pioli.

But, yeah, there is a worry about BB's personality. He's not a "player's coach" -- if you want someone to slap you on the butt, go play for Herm Edwards -- but there's a worry that he's indifferent to players' emotions and that it was Charlie and (especially) RAC who kept a lot of the emotional balance of the franchise going. The players play well because they're ambitious, well-coached professionals and they are told what to do -- but that is where it ends.

I have ABSOLUTELY no evidence for that last paragraph. I write it only to give an honest presentation of the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt that the media Furies are starting to dig into. There's no way that we can refute that picture, but we've been here before (the Lawyer Milloy release). I'm 85% sure that it's wrong -- but we've got to acknowledge the existence of the other 15%.

I think that's worth repeating.

Other than the ones that I had mentioned in the first post on this thread, has anyone else seen in print or heard of media person use the word "arrogant" very recently, when reffering to BB?

I'm very curious because it seems funny that some are suddenly using the same word as if they have taking points.

Morons....

Just trying to stir the pot, nothing else makes any sense.

Tunescribe, this post is absurd. How dare you play amatuer psychologist with this man's life! There have been a lot of insane things written about Bill Belichick on this website lately, but this one takes the cake. This man's medical condition or LACK THEREOF is not an appropriate topic for this forum. Coach Belichick had to publicly announce the year old separation from his wife because YOU broke the story on this messageboard. YOU intruded into his personal life, YOU crossed the line. If you are doing it again then this is reprehensible and you should be ashamed of yourself!

All Bill Belichick has done is bring respectability and three Super Bowl titles to our football team. Now that we go one year without a shiney silver trophy and a parade everyone is ready to kick him like a stray dog. There are not enough words to describe how disgusted I am about this.......

Nut, D&C were talking about this on the radio this morning. They said that BB is arrogant if he thought that AV would just re-sign here because he liked New England. I did hear Greenberg say something similar on NEST last night.

I can't take much more of this media fueled Belichick bashing BS. Just because these reporters are too lazy to go out and work and write stories about real news or features on current, former or draft eligible players, we have to listen to waves of BS about Bill Belichick.

They want him to stand in front of them and explain what happened with Adam.

If that is not arrogance, then I don't know what is.

Here's why Adam signed with the Cots $$$$$$$$$$$$$. I don't know why that is not good enough for them.

I'm in total agreement. This thread has been making me crazy all day but I couldn't respond at work.

Tunescribe -- have you ever heard of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator which defines the differences and similarities in human personalities? BB’s not depressed, he’s an “I.†Here’s the definition.

Introverts (I) are energized by the inner world of reflection, thought, and contemplation. They need space and time alone. Introverts like reading, lectures, written oral work. They usually have a longer attention span and prefer to think things through before acting. I's are uncomfortable in discussion groups, may find it difficult to remember names, and hesitate to speak up in class. Introverts will have fun at a party if they can talk with one person all night.

The media criticizes the Sox because they hold a press conference to explain why Johnny Damon signed with the Yankees but they also criticize the Pats when they don’t. BB is NOT arrogant because he doesn’t feel the need to explain himself to us or to the media. He doesn’t owe us that. The arrogance, I think, is on the media's part.

Bill's Girl: Please look up "overreaction" in the dictionary. Copy it down, tape it to your bathroom mirror, and practice some long, slow, deep breathing at least twice a day. This should help preclude future bouts of hyperventilation and umbrage-induced bloviating. Once these coping mechanisms are firmly established, you may wish to silently repeat the soothing mantra, "It's only a football Internet messageboard ... It's only a football Internet messageboard ... "

If we are looking for a textbook definition of the word arrogant, may I present exhibit A! You can insult me as you have insulted BB, with your dime store, Dr. Phil psycho-babble, but it does not take away from the fact that you have crossed the line in the past. Your "high and mighty" attitude around here is growing tiresome.

Be interesting to see if any of our vaunted sportswriters use Myers Briggs as a story idea in the next couple of days.
