New Era Scouting 3-round mock

I'd rather see Meriweather at the LOS. He showed a great ability to get to the QB and his hands are average at best.

Meriweather's hands have improved quite a bit, and he has good ball skills. Being a FS doesn't stop him from blitzing. BB has clearly stated that he sees the FS/SS distinction being somewhat blurred, and wanting versatility at both positions.

The biggest problem I see with Meriweather playing up more of the time is whether he can stand up to the pounding. His frame seems somewhat maxed out, and I could see him become injury prone.

I have no problem with Johnson as a FS, though as I said, I would prefer Sean Smith. But personally I prefer Delmas to both as a complement to Meriweather.

The only way Merriweather's hands are going to improve is with stick-um. I would not worry about Merriweather taking a pounding, he dishes as wellas he gets.

If BB misses on getting Johnson, he can always try for Bruton of Notre Dame who tackles better, but does not possesss Johnson's superior ball skills.

I love Bruton as a 3rd/4th rounder. At the very least he can take over Izzo's role on the team.

I have been looking at this kid for a while now and with BB conection with Weis he has to have some inside info on the guy. He is a big fast safety who is smart and I think would be able to make in impact on ST right away just like dryheat44 said.

BOR you have watched a few Cincy games what are your thoughts on Brandon Underwood? From what I can get he is a FS first but practiced at corner at East West Bowl. From what I can find out he is a good prospect on special teams but will have a hard time playing corner in the pros?? They say that he is physical enough to play safety so that is where scouts see him fitting in.

What is it with Cincinnati playing kids at so many different positions

No ILB or OT?

I am with you. Bet BB takes both.

Seeing that some posts are referencing Safeties, I have to ask: where's the love for Chip Vaughn?

Underwood was a CB at Ohio State who got in trouble over maturity/work ethic issues and was eventually booted off the team. He transferred to Cincy and sat out a year, he was used at both CB and FS because Cincy had two quality CBs with Mike Mickens and DeAngelo Smith, Underwood took over at CB when Mickens was hurt last Fall.

I imagine the Pats have had to do extra due diligence on him, but Cincy has a Head Coach who doesn't seem to cut players a lot of slack so the kid seems to have turned a corner.

He has more athleticism than DeAngelo Smith who I saw literally covering two defenders at the same time in one game and still make the play on the ball - I couldn't tell you what the coverage was, but it looked like the offense tried to flood Smith's side of the field with two deep patterns and Smitty just kept his backpedal and his spacing between the two until the QB committed, then he got there with the ball. So if Underwood has been developed in that system and has more athleticism, I'm hip.

I like Chip in the mid-late 2nd round. If we miss out on Delmas early then I'd be all over him.

Bill doesn't just use the Wonderlic as a gauge. Also, you might want to look back at some of the current Patriots that BB has drafted. You'll be surprised...

Here are some of the current Patriots:

Vince Wilfork - 10
Ty Warren - 15
Ellis Hobbs - 15
Mankins - 31
Kaczur - 29

Interesting. Thank you.

Plus the size is better. Bruton is like 212 and Johnson is 195.

No way.. Vaughn isn't that good. He's a poor man's James Sanders... And people have enough issues with Sanders...

Other than the fact that Vaughn is taller (6'2"), bigger (220) & faster (<4.5) than lil' Jimmy, I see your point.

I was refering to ability to cover (which is poor) and his lack of instincts.

Not physical characteristics..
