NEW ARTICLE: Zappe’s Emergence is Certainly Changing Patriots’ QB Conversation

Imagine if Zappe becomes a high level QB in the future (unlikely). Will someone say Belichick knew all about it, was planning to play him in year 2 even if Mac did not suck so bad, cutting him was just about building his mental toughness and that Bill knew all along he would come good?
Wow, you can both read peoples mind and also see into the future. How did you know I already had this in chap14 of the second act?

I was being sarcastic lol as everything Bill does (even the bad decisions) is some sort of 4d chess move according to somebody.

Also playing on the narrative that he was going to play Brady in 2001 regardless of Bledsoe's injury.
BB preferring Brady's more efficient style to Bledsoe's was written about in Michael Holley's Patriot Reign back in 2004. For the young kids out there, he was Mike Reiss before there was a Mike Reiss.

Bill drafted the guy in the 6th, then carried four QB's before making Tom the backup... and you think he didn't like him?

The improvements in stats, the production from the WRs is significant. This team was better than someone made them to look.

Zappe is the "vet who can start right away" if he finishes this season strong.

They will bring in another rookie QB to compete regardless.

Mac's the one you trade, Zappe's the one you keep.
Possible. Figured it would be Jones as the bridge but that’s not happening now.

I'll say this. If Zapp plays well in training camp he'll be the starter no matter what the team does at QB. I think the team adds talent at WR and LT In the off season.

My assumption is Mac gets traded to San Fran for a 5th.. he and Purdy compete in camp.. ?

Purdy owns the job, unless he has a total collapse.
Always have to compete. He has the job for now. So did all the QBs before him. Even the GOAT for 19 seasons said he felt like he had to fight to keep his job each training camp.

Add talent at OT, QB and WR... take offense, you had a league worst offense.

Agreed, just not agreeable that Mac has the stones to compete or play. The 49ers should draft another QB for good measure.

Also Sam Darnold is a free agent, but if Purdy falters Sam is sitting right there. Mac might not be better than Darnold.

Mac is still salvageable. He's just ruined in NE physiologically. I believe if he went there he'd at least be in a better situation being a backup then being a backup here. Purdy does nothing special. He's steady eddy, takes care if the ball and does what Shanahan asks of him. He's a winner. Winning is the ultimate stat as a QB.

That's why I said adding at WR, adding a LT not a part time player in Trent Brown. The draft has to be primarily on offense. Can grab some defensive peices in mid to later rounds. Need a FS and CB depth.

He's a creme puff, softer than Charmin.

I agree with you, offensive tackle especially is a desperate need... I'd say #1.

But getting the QB right is also crucial, we can't assume Zappe is the answer. If he isn't, you need another top prospect sitting there.

They should re-sign their own free agents (all three TE's, Onwenu, Elliot, Bourne, Duggar, Uche, Jennings) and use the entire draft on offense... and anther kicker for competition.

Only in an offense-minded team. Belichick went defense heavy in the last draft after the offense woefully underperformed. And was the second oldest unit in the league.

I can see Gonzo (no brainer) and first round talent White.

But Mapu in the third? Wow. Even with prominent talent available at RT (Dawand Jones) and TE.

Mac Jones needs a high powered offense and a clean picket. Just like he had at Bama.

Zappe in college at Western Kentucky went against much superior competition and more than held his own. He’s too short and lacks good arm strength. And yet. There’s that unfazed competitive drive. He’s a natural.

He just has to learn not to get the ball stripped or throw a bad INT. I believe he will improve.

Corky was a disaster this season.

If Zappe goes 1-1 the rest of the way and continues looking good (including at least a very competitive showing against Buffalo) then you take MHJ, Nabers, Alt or Fashanu, grab a QB in the 2nd or 3rd like Penix or Ewers and start Zappe in '24.

If Zappe becomes a pumpkin again and goes 0-2 the rest of the way then you take the QB.

You don't take a QB unless you're sold that he's got the type of intelligence that you saw with Brady. The Pats need bookend tackles. Receivers and a QB don't matter if the line doesn't give you 3-3.5 seconds for your plays to develop.

Agree with you on getting a top OT…there are 2 that are rated very highly. At least one of them should be available at our spot…#3,4,5,6…wherever we eventually end up.

I think we’ll look to draft a QB in rounds 2-4 to come in and compete. We’ll bring in a vet FA QB also. No way we’re going into camp with just Zappe and Rourke.

This draft should be focused on offensive playmakers and OL. Maybe add a mid-late rd DB for depth.

I also agree with you on most of your resignings. Not sure we’ll resign all 3 TEs; We should keep Brown (he’s the only TE on the team that can block, plus he’s a decent pass catcher), we’ll keep one of Gesicki or Henry but probably not both. I wouldn’t bother resigning Uche; he’s a one trick pony who has a good game and then disappears for 3-4 games.

I think the organization likes Ryland but definitely should bring another K into camp to at least push him.

In my mind Zappe being possibly serviceable only makes me not want to spend to trade up for one of the 3 QBs. If one of them are there when we pick I for sure take one. But I’m not packaging high draft capital to move up. That’s just me though.

Just watch him in the playoffs. He’s not the perfect prospect. His four season-ending injuries at Indiana are the notable red flag.

But I consider him a first round talent who may fall because of this.
I'm going watch hoping Ewers have a lights out Game and make the Draft even more interesting.
