The defense is far ahead of the offense. The offense is not good, to the point where the d needs to shut itself down so the O can finish it out. That's ominous imo. A foretelling of a rough road ahead this year.

I don't want the offense to fail. Far from it. I want Drake Maye to work on his short comings to position himself for success. If it takes him a full year to get right, then so be it. Same goes with the rest of the O. But I'm also not going to bury my head in the sand and ignore what's actually being said about what's actually happening on the practice field. That's not wanting them to fail. It's a recognition that the rookie QB and the new O are a work in progress.

We are at the beginning of a marathon, and a bunch of people are pushing this like it's a sprint.

Mac was polished when he came out of college. He was able to see things like a pro QB. For whatever Mac's deficiencies were, he actually was able to read the play pretty well and the coverage prior to the snap and knew where to go to (at least in his initial read). Mac was an efficient, fairly mistake free QB in his rookie season. From the sounds of it, Maye has to work on it.

I agree with this, and one of the worst things they did to Mac was Patricia the control freak stopping him from changing plays and taking command of the situation.

That said, Mac doesn't have an NFL arm, and he hasn't shown NFL toughness. I don't think he'll ever be anything more than a mediocre starter/backup, and that would have been the case no matter how the Pats had handled him.

It isn't a good or bad thing at this point. The Pats drafted Maye know he was raw and he would be a work in progress. He is going to make stupid throws into bad coverage until he learns how to read defense a little better. The Patriots knew this was something he was going to have to work on when they drafted him. He seems to be ahead of schedule with fixing some of his mechanics problem. Hopefully, he will do the same with the mental aspect of the game.

He's a kid, truly. He'll turn 22 right before the season starts. IF (there's that big word) they can sort things out, he could be special.

I still believe that two years from now, Atlanta won't look silly for their first round decision.

Curran has been down on Maye since before the draft (he wanted them to trade down) and has consistently been the most critical/negative on Maye out of all the beat writers since then. Nothing wrong with that, but just important to have that context.

Again, this is conjecture from Curran on what could potentially happen later. There have been no reports that they have asked the Defense to slow down in any of the practices so far.

Highly agree. I won't subscribe tot he media pundits, and the like about how bad we project to be offensively.. the offense will be leaps and bounds better than what you saw last season. All NFL defenses are ahead of the offense in this phase of the off season. Joe b. In Cincinnati yesterday was even saying he needs to get back in sync with his recievers.

However taking nothing away from our defense.. because they are down right elite.

Mac had some good qualities. Even accidentally saw some highlights of our WR's last year, and Mac was retroactively impressing me with his anticipation and accuracy.
The problem was with Mac's mental fortitude. He couldn't stand up to the competition and pressure and (fairly) instability around him.
Although I never liked his silliness and horsing around like he's lose and confident. It seemed fake and was only skin deep.
That video of him screwing around on the running drill in JAX reminded me why I'm glad we've moved on.

Brissett & Maye are much more professional, and Jacoby - for sure - is much more genuine. Maye should grow into that.

It's been said by many in the know, that some of Maye's strengths have been his intelligence, mental toughness, leadership, and taking to coaching. Let's hope all of that is true. He clearly has the arm and athletic ability. I like what I've been hearing from those that are covering the Mini-Camps.

He’s got everything you want in an NFL QB when it comes to physical tools and athleticism, it’s character, work ethic, and intangibles that will or will not make him a great player. Right now it appears he has what it takes, but we really won’t find out until he faces the serious obstacles, such as coming from behind, losing streaks, coordinators taking away his strengths, the OL breaking down, and a lack of top skill players around him. Jones couldn’t overcome any of these obstacles, Maye will have to if he wants to become a franchise QB. Should be interesting to watch him develop.

Wich to me is kind of confusing.. as Curran felt we should have taken McCarthy... when other league GMs and scouts have said maye was the best prospect in the draft. Maye was so highly touted teams were willing to give up a fortune to get him. The fact wolf and Mayo stayed still and selected him is telling of drake's value and potential. I feel the kids a star in the making IMO.

I don't expect our Offense to be able to be play against our Defense now, all year, and or even next year. I expect us to be a top 5-10 Defense. We are hoping for the Offense to elevate itself to average within a year or so, [BTW, an average Offense and our Defense yields a playoff team.

Our Defense could play at a top10 Defense level today. It would be malpractice for the coaches to have our Offense playing against this top Defense playing full out. Baby steps! The Offense will get better every day, first as the team get used to playing together in the new system.
I expect each of our three major problem areas to get better every day: QB, WR, ns the left side of the OL.

As an aside, I also expect that the team will improve at ST's every day. Having our returners back and having competition at place kicker should help a lot. The unit as a whole has lost lots of those who had lots of reps last year. This is likely a very good thing. I presume that the new players on ST's will be improved with new players and a new system.
