NE@BUF post-game (over)reaction thread

It's crazy, the D won us this game.

Just looking at the box scores (I missed the game due to work) - anytime you can keep CJ Spiller to just 2.5 ypc or whatever it was, it's a win. Johnson seemingly also got nothing bar the TD (which I've seen).

Vereen's a beast, by the way.

Knee jerk reactions:

1) Defense (as a whole played really well). Limited Buffalo to 150 yards passing, which is pretty impressive given how many times they passed. No plays over 20 yards (though several were close).

2) On the flip side, where the heck was the pass rush? Did Manuel even get hit in the pocket the whole game?

3) Amendola is a better security blanket than Welker. He's bigger and makes catches that Welker can't (or would drop). Having both on the field would be awesome though.

4) Why not stick to the running game? They seemed to be ripping off 5 yard runs consistently the whole game.

5) Not Brady's best game. Fumble on the 1, forcing the ball some, some off throws.

6) What the heck was up with the no-PI calls? Seemed like a lot of shirt grabbing going on during the game.

7) No too concerned about the rookies. It was their first game.

8) What's up with Geno Smith pointing to his right arm after throwing his one TD (after turning the ball over twice before)? The circus in NY will be just as big with him this year as it was with Tebow last year, but for different reasons.

He had a bad drop which you can argue cost Buffalo the game (poetic justice, really.) His TD was the result of a blown coverage, I'm not sure if it was on Talib or Gregory but one of them played it wrong, one of the few bad plays by the secondary today.

Almost all of Buffalo's yards were dumps to Jackson/Spiller and Jackson breaking a few decent runs. Defense was great overall.

Who was Dennard covering today? becasue you never heard his name ( a good thing) must have done a good job

Dennard was tremendous today. Locked down his half of the field.

Thompkins will,be fine. He'll learn from those rookie gaffs after he reviews the film and takes his coaching on his errors. I really hope Dobson can get back for Thursday night to give Tommy one more perimeter option.

Jets, Miami and NE 1-0....two of these teams have stifling defenses. This season looks like a "defend home turf" and try to get 10 wins. This will have to be Tom Brady's greatest season if this team has any expectations of a playoff berth and any success.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I think this WILL end up being Brady's greatest season, but the stats won't reflect it. He's playing with such young players that he will end up holding the ball longer, take more sacks, throw more incompletions, and throw more picks, because the receivers are not yet fully sure where they're supposed to be at all times. Running a pattern two yards off where it should be is a recipe for a pick-six in this league.

And all those will show up on Brady's stats, not the receivers'. Like the INT today. Right to Sudfeld...should have had the catch, but nope. Turns out to be an interception. It reflects poorly on Brady but it was a good pass.

I know not everyone was high on Aaron Dobson’s play during the preseason, that said he was very good in my opinion in the reps he saw with Brady, and I think he was someone who was missed today, at the very least he is a player who can draw coverage out of there, along with being a bigger target who can matchup in 1on1 jump ball situations.

I am also of the opinion that Thompkins is a better fit for the Y receiver position, where he can work underneath, and shorter outside routes, I do not think he has the skillset to work 1on1 with the other teams #1 outside CB on a consistent basis.

I think having Dobson on the field will really help out, both by giving Brady a true X receiver to target and with opening things up for the other guys.

If he can go Thursday, I fully expect Dobson to be active for the game. This redshirt year people are talking about is nonsense. They can't afford to just sit a healthy receiver for a season. And maybe if Dobson is out there today the passing game is at the least a tiny bit better.

Vereen had that "redshirt" year because he was last on the depth chart behind, BJGE, Woodhead, Ridley and Faulk (when he was healthy)

Wouldn't suffering mean FORCED double helpings of dessert?

[Or are prison desserts actually halfway decent? I've never had prison food, and never intend to, so I wouldn't know. ]

I've never been in jail either, but I know several who were and one was a pretty good size guy. According to him the 3 squares they give you aren't exactly designed to accommodate a 6'3 230 lb frame. So big guys tend to get a little grumpy around the food dispensers. Of course Arron has money for now so he's probably eating well. That won't last though and I can't help but wonder what he will look like in a few years.

Football games aren't graded on a curve where you get points because rookies aren't supposed to be expected to play well.
He steps on the field he needs to be good enough to play. Today he was not. Maybe he had a cold.

Actually, it depends on how you look at it. With rookies, you generally have lowered expectations. This isn't just in football, but nearly every line of work.

prison diet is high on carbs and enough caloric intake to keep an inmate in good health. The only way to maintain size is muscle powder or illegal juice smuggled in either by the guards or medical staff. You also have to be in population to work out...if you're in seg 23 hours a day or PC you WILL look like someone popped your balloon...and Ahern looks like that today.

The offense looked terrible at some points today. Thompkins couldn't make any catches that weren't routine and his footwork was terrible. Sudfeld was a complete no show outside of the pass that he bobbled that resulted in an INT. I thought the defense looked good but defending EJ Manuel really isn't difficult and the pass rush still seemed to disappear for stretches. But still, it's a division win on the road, so I'll take it. Gronk coming back should help with the offensive struggles.

a win is a win.

D played great today.

Loved the final drive, classic Brady.

hated the OL play today - Brady took way too many hits and it seemed like they didn't pick up blitzes very well.

on to game 2!

Stat of the Day: Of Danny Amendola's 10 catches, 9 went for first downs, and 7 were third-down conversions. Wow.

Through all training camp and 4 pre-season games Thomkins was clearly superior to Dobson, who is 4 or 5 on the depth chart. Sitting out with an injury has not changed the fact that Dobson has a long way to go. Thomkins will continue to play as long as he does more things right than the next guy. One game is too early to tell how quickly the rookies will learn and improve. THe guys who played have something ot learn from. Dobson needs to show he belongs on the field.

It's good to get a win despite a myriad of horrible mistakes. Our offense had it's growing pains but I thought we thoroughly outplayed Buffalo, the only reason it was close was a few fluke turnovers (Ridley making a fool of himself, fluke bounce off Sud's hands, and Brady hands them the ball on the GL). Yeah they had mistakes too, but theirs were forced (big ups to Arrington today). Regardless, I'll take it whether its 45-7 or 23-21.

Mixed reactions on the new punter. He had a few good kicks but a few bad ones too - the awful 20 something yarder when trying a coffin corner, a touchback from around midfield I believe, and the one from our own 5 (wasn't that bad but certainly wasn't good). His big kick was a good one (should've netted around 50) but it became alot better than it should've been due to a lapse by their return man. And he did get a couple inside the 10. Overall it's okay but at this point I would rather have Mesko and a mill less in cap space. Hopefully he improves.

Ridley obviously messed up big but I think the Jets game would be a good opportunity to let him get his confidence back a little. If it's a close game though I definitely wouldn't want to see any 2nd half carries for him. vereen looks to not only make us forget Woodhead, but be a major upgrade.

Ghostkowski came up big, hopefully that's a sign he'll be the guy he was pre-injury and contract. Was money today on some huge kicks.

I'm praying Amendola stays healthy but chances are he'll miss at least a few. He's an absolute beast and like others I feel safer with him than Welker in crunchtime. Seems to have better hands and the ability to make plays, even when covered pretty good. Edelman too very vital to the offense right now.

Zero impact from any of the 14 rookies...nice drafting bb....

Won a division road game. Played good D, ran the ball well, threw for close to 300 yards. Won a division road game.

This. Win. Division road win. Next.

The play of the OL as a whole was brutal to watch today. They're going to have a long week in the film room.

Care to try that one again?

wes probably drops that last catch amendola made. and I say this as a guy who was a big fan of wes. wish we could have gotten both amendola and wes.

Just like my sig says and the great Mike Ditka. I'll take the luck on winning this one. IT was a heck of a game that is for sure. Can't wait to watch how these guys develop later in the season!

And hope to god we run it more on first and goal!
