The Patriots are gambling with their roster. They didn't want to pay big money for Deion Branch, so they lost him for lesser receivers. Yet, they went to the AFC title game without him. Now, they are contemplating not re-signing Asante Samuel, who will compete against Nate Clements for the big cornerback money in free agency. The Patriots also could lose tight end Daniel Graham and linebacker Tully Banta-Cain in free agency. Clearly, the window hasn't closed on the Patriots' Super Bowl runs, but their roster is getting thinner and thinner each year. It's going to be hard for them to stay at the 12-win level next season because they have the toughest schedule in the AFC (.535 against). Last year, they had a .496-against schedule, which helped their record. Still, the Patriots should win 10 or 11 games without too much trouble. Tom Brady is still the quarterback. Coach Bill Belichick has reached the Hall of Fame level, but at some point he needs a new contract. There is some thought this could be the final year of his deal. This guy Clayton isn't great but I don't think anything he said was all that egrigous. I mean, I would feel a lot better if Kraft came out and said SP/BB were signed to dual 10 yr contracts. I would also feel better if we let Graham go and put the two second yrs into the fire as run blockers with Watson in as an everydown receiving tight end (generalization I know, but you get the idea). Graham hasn't exactly lived up to Ben Coates standards or the award he won at UC as the nations best TE.

I live in Seattle, and Clayton has a weekly radio show on here.

Clayton is very knowledgeable about players, but he doesn't seem to get the concept that every dollar you pay one player is a dollar you can't pay somebody else. Before the 2005 season, he thought Troy Brown should get a $2 million dollar deal. If he were a GM, he'd be like many teams....good starters, not much depth.

Also, everytime he talks about how little Pioli and Belichick make, I just don't see where he could get that information. Pioli and Belichick? The Krafts? Their agents? None of them likely. He may have sources in the league office with access to their contracts -- but they may not contain any performance bonuses those two get.

The way it's reported, you'd think Belichick and Pioli must be stupid for staying and making so much less than they could make elsewhere. Does that make any sense to anybody? Of course not. You know that Kraft likes to give bonuses for performance, and I'll bet those two are nearly the highest if not the highest paid coach and GM over the past six years.

Clayton struggles...that's about all I have to say about that. Actually, as with most of the national media types, I think he's trying to make his mark. Calling the fall of a dynasty or the rise of a team (Arizona anyone?) is typically remembered amid failures by those who cover sports on a national basis. Which is why I don't put too much stock into the opinion of the team based on someone in Clayton's shoes. I equate the majority of national media "experts" to people picking the NCAA tournament. You have those guys in your pool every year that go crazy picking upsets left and right. Inevitably, they are right once, and everyone anoints them a "genius" for making the pick. Of course, they missed on the other picks, and don't win the pool, but they are forever the guy who picked Bradley over Kansas.

I don't know about you guy's but Culpepper scares the crap out of me. He is so miraculous. The way he angles those interceptions just sends shivers throughout the AFC East.
