There is disappointment or even suspicion because Brady has not done a great job of defending himself verbally in this whole Deflategate mess. I think the disappointment is largely misplaced, for the simple reasons that:
  • While Brady is of above-average articulateness when compared to other NFL players ...
  • ... he is not very articulate when compared to high-powered lawyers (e.g. Wells, Yee) or highly successful businessmen (Goodell -- blech -- or even the often verbally-bumbling Kraft).
As football players go, Brady is a fiery leader, whose followers don't mind if he stumbles over some words as he's doing the leading. He graduated from a good university with no hints of his degree being a sham. He grew up in a well-off two-parent household, with a father who's some kind of public speaker. Against that comparison set, he's articulate. But lawyers, coaches and CEOs all have to meet higher standards of communication ability in their work than do football players -- even stars -- and compared to them, Brady is not a strong debater or public-sentiment-manipulator at all.

As an illustration of my point -- do you think Brady would be as good at Bruschi's or Chatham's post-playing careers as they are? I don't think so. Those guys are simply better communicators than he is, at least when the general public is the audience for the communication.
