Mike Lombardi on the Jamie Collins trade..

Apparently Lombardi is going in on Collins on WEEI...

Lombardi is too biased to be take 100 % seriously. If he had laid into collins before the trade i wouldve understood. He just blamed the pats defense for being poor but now is going after collins. Probably pats are not feeding this information but thats how it will be seen.

He's been bashing the defense for weeks, go back and listen to the BS podcast last couple of weeks.

You're focusing way too hard on a fantasy trade that has so little to do with my point at hand.

The point is, if you're going to dump Collins, a Pro Bowl calliber LB, mid season on a defense that could use more help, not less, then you need to get a player in return that will help the team win a Super Bowl this season.

A 4th in 2018 does very little to help this team win a Super Bowl in 2016, especially when you're essentially just dumping your 2nd round picked All-Pro LB and thinning your depth further.

Every big trade Bill has made, I initially was shocked, but saw the value in the move, one way or another.

Unfortunately there's no way I can see the positive in just dumping Collins for a mid-tier pick, rather then keep him on the team for the duration of the season and letting him walk for a similar, if not better, comp pick. Doesn't make sense, any way you slice it.

If we lose in the postseason because of the defense, or Roberts and Hightower go down with an injury, you won't be singing the same tune about "more than life after Brady" and that this move being "for the team". You'll be pissed we gave away one of our best Linebackers to the Browns for a crapshoot pick two seasons down the line.

I was focusing on the "fantasy trade" aspect because thats my only big issue with what you are saying.

I agree that from the outside it didn't seem necessary and at the very least hits us in terms of depth. Nobody here knows whats going on inside the building but the murmurs that went through the beat and some closer people (e.g. Loyko) that there were a couple of heated arguments between the coaching staff and JC makes me think that BB just had enough of it. Truth is we will never know.

So unless we stay healthy at LB throughout the season and win the big one, the stench of this trade will never go away I guess and will be used as a scapegoat for yet another failed year.

if the defense has been bad with collins it's now worse without him.

dumb trade, makes no ****ing sense.

Lombardi is just doing a hyperbole schtick to get a well paid position on some bigger network as an NFL insider I suppose. I guess you gotta peel away a lot of his exaggeration to get to those interesting nuggets.

The one thing I take away from all of this is that Collins doesn't have the same determination as a lot of other archetypical Patriots and kinda never fully realized his potential.

Which still means that he is a great player but won't get into that Luke Kuechly tier mostly because he isn't mentally tough/determined enough to grind for that on every practice snap.

So we agree, the first goal was to punish him + ship him to worst team possible...

No, not at all. I don't think they care about "punishing" guys, they care only about one thing, the same thing that they always say, which is "what's good for the team". Having Collins miss assignments, even when he's a transcendental athlete, does not help the team. Having him unhappy in the locker room and guys wondering what's going on and not focusing on their jobs is not good for the team. So they were simply better off as a team without him there at this point in time.

Now having decided that, the next task is to ensure that he doesn't come back this year to bite us in the azz. So that means shipping him to a team we won't play again this year in any circumstance because we know he can be a great player as he was for us up until recently. Cleveland was a strong candidate, but there would have been several others who were not on the remainder of our schedule and who weren't making the playoffs. A bonus is that Cleveland could franchise him, then we wouldn't see him signing with the Jets or the Colts or something like that where he could become a problem for us next year.

This makes the trade more confusing. I'm done trying to figure out why or how it went don't none of us will truly ever know. Time to move on, I'm moving on.

I fully expect Cleveland to franchise him, I assume that was most of the point for them. This season is already lost, after all -- and it's hard for them to attract top free agents.

flores may have been talking about collins' play for the past few years. certainly he was a good player overall, but this year there was a drop off.

Makes me wonder how much if at all Lombardi is talking out of his ass.
Two points :

1) His former coach isn't going to throw him under the bridge.
2) I'd be stunned if Patricia, seeing the bigger picture, says the same thing.

That said, obviously I don't know where the truth lies.

1. If that's true they could get a better offer. If Mack gets hurt they traded him for a 4th in 2018, so basically for Cleveland if him walk they would get a 3rd for him ( yes, 11m+ per get you a 3rd) ...

2. I don't think that is a factor at all. Jones first game was against us. They could care less.

3. Now we agree. Cleveland has everything to be a perfect spot for him. Average team (being nice) + No QB + They have money so they will tag him.

This move punish Collins + send a message + reward Cleveland for all players that they trade with us for nothing ( any team would give a early 4th for JC) + give us the same compensation ( probably) that we would receive in 2018 after FA a year early + without JC they only have 2 big contracts 10m+ next year ( Butler + HT)
