McDaniels to Meet with Patriots this Weekend

Possibly far fetched, but is it at all possible that McDaniels actually replaces O'Brien this weekend?

1) He knows the system.

2) Brady, Mankins, Light, Welker, Faulk have all played for him before.

3) He could be installed by Monday.

4) O'Brien is getting hit with a $hitstorm of epic proportions that could easily distract him

5) We never saw the Pats interviewing for replacements DURING the playoffs WHILE Weis, Crennel, McDaniels or Mangini were here.

Although my guess is that the NFL would never allow a coach or player to "double dip" within one season once their team's season is over.

The last thing I want is McDaniels taking over this post-season. Next year, hell yes. But now...**** no! This is BOB's offense this year and over my dead body is he leaving because of some "distractions" from, err, Penn State.

Breer tweeted sometime yesterday that there is no league rule that precludes Josh joining the organization for the post season once St. Louis releases him from his contract. I don't think you will see it, but if he is hired this week he will have some role in the preparation that follows. Probably just well behind the scenes. Perhaps bouncing ideas off BB who may then selectively funnel them past Brady and to BOB in the form of game planning input. He would at least be another set of eyes scouting wise. Bill is to smart to allow Josh's presence in and of itself to become a distraction or generate potential confusion or disruption for his players and the other offensive coaches.

I think the main reason they were so quick to persue is they are not ready to promote from within and they anticipated Josh being a target Scott and a handful of others (like Atlanta if they lose their OC) would persue once the dust settled in St. Louis and in their own situations. So they decided to strike almost pre-emptively to get in front of any competition because with BOB not under contract and actively interviewing and persuing other opportunities they could. It was different when RAC and Charlie left because even though they knew both were gone they already had identified in house replacements. And it's different for Scott or Dimetroff right now because Scott doens't have a HC although he does have an OC under contract as does Dimetroff even if he is allowing him to or anticipating he will interview for HC vacancies.

It's also possible that the rumored advice/convincing that BOB got to persue the job came from within this organization. And was driven in part by the availability of McDaniels this year. Otherwise you extend BOB and likely face him interviewing again next season when Josh isn't available.

Although I think McDaniels may take a role to help the Pats while the encumbant OC isn't fullfilling his OC duties, I think that there have been enough changes that he will not take on the full responsibilites of an OC. If he is named OC right away, then it is a pretty good sign that BB is upset with his OC taking a job while in the middle of a playoff run. The Pats don't need a distraction, but they do need all their coaches focused and working hard.

Part of the reason the Pats asked permission to speak with him now is because there are other teams trying to acquire him. Considering BB and McDaniel's personal relationship they likely had conversations before permission was actually asked for. This weekend may just be a smoke show and cramming session to bring him up to speed ASAP, and give the appearance that there was no tampering. Either way, since he is coming, it is almost certain he will be a member of the coaching staff this year or next.

This is about next season only, and beyond - but the good news is that things can fall into place quickly.

Your #1 & 2 say it all - McDaniels hits the ground running and improves the offense next year, and even assists in the development of Ryan Mallett.

The Pats thank goodness are actually in a position to lock down that vital need for next season immediately, given the opportunity of BoB announcing his move during the bye, when McDaniels could be available to meet with the Patriots as well.

The alternative is a distant second choice for Belichick I would think. Let's hope they get this done quickly.

Well bringing him on now he has an opportunity to get back up to spped with the changes in the system since he left.

However BoB will be handling the O during the playoffs anything else would be stupid.

BB is not going to make him a highly paid OC. BB views the opportunity JMcD has in NE is one that will allow him to rehabilitate his career. Perception or no perception, he left DEN as a failure and his time at StL also as a failure.

JMcD has an ego- all coaches do. The question is will his ego allow him to come back and allow the perception to be the guy who failed on his own and moving back in with mom and dad or should he continue to wander the streets and hope to re-establish his brand on his own- in KC perhaps.

Josh does have some good options and situations available to him. Pioli, RAC and the Hunt family are quality people. Obviously BB and the Krafts is a great place to land. Hes actually quite lucky to have these options available.

So IMO it comes down to Matt Cassell and Tom Brady.....hmmmmm

I thought at first that BOB was leaving this weekend without sticking around for the playoffs. However, with BOB staying, McDaniels is getting looked at NOW because other teams are going to be interested in him. BB is just thinking ahead like he always does.

What NE is doing on offense with the TE position is light years ahead of what the rest of the league is doing. Granted, there are other prolific offenses right now (GB & NO), but they are doing it using an "older" BB model, ala 07 NE or 99-00 StL.

NE is doing things at the TE position that have NEVER been done, and any OC worth his salt should be willing to be a part of that and to help mold/refine it. If it was between being an OC at NE, or a head coaching gig then yeah, I could see him going elsewhere. But for an OC here, or an OC there..... I can't see his ego being so big that he would pass up the opportunity to work with TFB, our OL, TE's, etc..... just because of some BS perception that he's "coming home" in failure.

Agree on the Josh statement that he should put his ego aside and decide what is best for his career- and working with quality personnel and for a strong, stable organization should be the priority. What NE is doing with the TE is amazing but in actuality they really aren't being revolutionary IMO. The offensive system and its success is more of a product of the ungodly talents of Gronk, WW, Brady and AH. There is a long history of TEs who could stretch the field-having two together that can do it? Clearly no.

I actually think KC would be a very good gig for Josh. RAC is a defensive guy but also passionate and intense but not to the point of not being over the top. Pioli is a very good GM who will will give his coaches freedom to operate and be creative. As far as KC's personnel, Bowe, Breston and WR3 du jour is solid. Battle, McCluster and IF Charles can be anything close to what he was last year makes that an excellent backfield. If Moeaki can come back that'll give them a very good TE option. Cassell is another one that needs a reboot, but with the right system and good playmakers around him, can do well as we have seen.

Clearly NE is the better option, but KC has a lot of upside. If the upside is realized, is that better for Josh's career than if NE went back to the SB with him as OC as opposed to going to the SB with KC? Tough one...

I sure hope it's just Pioli doing due diligence and confirming what he doesn't want in his next HC but if he is at all serious, then I do then to believe that Pioli really has lost his way and is at the point of desperation.

Now wouldn't it be interesting to see things fall into place with Denver and Houston both winning, with Tebow coming here to face the Patriots again - not to mention the one coach who believed in Tebow enough to hire him?
