They are reporting that Josh McDaniels has communicated he doesn't think he is ready to be a head coach and needs more time and has a perfect situation.
Similar thoughts had been tweeted by the likes of Peter King as well as others.
But never has it been talked about with this much detail.
Great to hear the coaching staff should stay intact.

Shows how much these guys are rushed sometimes if Josh thinks he's not ready to be a HC six years after he first became one.

A steady gig as an OC beats being HC for 1-2 years and then getting canned again........there's too much that's out of the HC's control in today's league.

he reports to a genius and likely has a nice long leash......I would not leave the most stable organization in the league

Would that be translated to: 'Sorry guys I'm waiting on the Patriots job'?

I'd be inclined to translate it to "I want to be head coach AND GM again, and I understand if teams don't think I'm ready for that."

I like Josh and am pleased to hear the news that he will probably return as OC. Like many others I find myself frustrated at times by some of the play calling but overall he does a very solid job.

I can only imagine if he called that Edelman pass and it got snuffed out or stopped. He'd be crapped all over for being too cute. Instead it will stand as one of the greatest plays in Patriots history.

Poor Falcons fans are looking at the possibility of missing out on Bowles as they did Rex.
The few McDaniels supporters on their messageboards think this is a plan to not disrupt the Patriots playoff run and when our season is over will immediately be named the Falcons coach.
I'd be shocked.
I agree with whoever said that he is holding out for what BB has GM and head coach he may get that with New England at some point.
When you look at what he has here the greatest mentor any coach could have the Goat QB his good close friend in the front office. A very supporting owner.
Do you leave that for the Meddling Arthur blank Dimitrioff, Pioli and Matty Ice?
A battered Julio? A awful defense?
Don't see him making that mistake.
However Nick Saban said he wouldnt go to Alabama.

Based solely on the last game, McDaniels didn't really lose any focus.

Now Patricia, and whoever coaches our DL, must've been interviewing all week long and all Saturday night with other teams...........

Where does the idea come from that McDaniel is BB's heir apparent?

I'd like BB disciple Urban Meyer when the time comes.

BTW, Chris, I edited your teaser thread title (adding "McDaniels Staying Pat").

Not sure why he would say that. Should have said that hes happy here and enjoys the success and stability here and leave it at that.

I think the ATL situation is sketchy anyway. Another lack-luster draft/FA period pretty much guarantees Dimintroff and Pioli should start putting their resumes on monster.com

Honestly, I'm glad he realizes he's in pretty close to Nirvana here.

Owner that doesn't meddle unnecessarily . . . ?
Gets to work with best friend and teammate from college . . . ?
Gets to coach arguably the best QB ever . . . ?
Gets to coach almost inarguably the best TE ever . . . ?
Gets to coach the best slot WR in the game . . . ?
Gets to learn from the greatest football mind of all time . . . ?
Doesn't have players putting the moves on his wife . . . ?

I never thought Josh would go anywhere right now, whether he is heir to the throne or not is immaterial, he has a great gig right now... and is still only 38 years old.

Great news, if true. I really don't want the Daboll era to begin any time soon.

Some comments on the comments:

1. Rex was never really in the running in Atlanta. Yes it seems like a perfect fit for REX, but not for the Atlanta FO. They are too smart to buy Rex's line. They've seen it up close. They know the flaws.

2. Don't underestimate the fact that McDamiels' wife and family LOVE it here. Why move his family to a new area wth all the risk that implies, even in a good situation with good people, when you can keep them here where they are happy, you are happy, and if you are patient a few more year will still be a HC. He's still very young

3. Its good that he's going to be here. Brady loves him and the truth of the matter is that EVERY OC gets criticism from all us armchair QB's who absolutely could have called a better play. ) Remember all the crap BOB got all the time. I think its simply the nature of the job. Its gonna happen regardless of who has the job

Happy wife equals happy life I know this firsthand lol.
If she isn't happy nobody is.

Or how enlightening bad experience can be. If his next attempt goes poorly that could be his last chance.
