Mayo's Intoductory Press Conference

Oh my goodness. For a press conference where they really didn’t lay out a road map of how they would do things it sure did spark a wide variety of emotions and topics. I can’t wait for their next press conference.

Not sure how any Pats fan can feel better about the situation after that press conference. Other than the cringe-worthy Thunder/Thundercat talk and gardener analogy, this answer by Thunder was particularly concerning to me.

Q: Robert, there's going to come a time when you have to turn in a draft card and make a pick official or make a signing official. Who will have the final say on those decisions?

Thunder Cat: Well, this is a day we want to celebrate Jerod taking this position. We have a lot of people internally who have had a chance to train and learn under the greatest coach of all time and a man whose football intellect is very special. In the short-term, we're looking for collaboration. Our team has a tremendous opportunity to position itself right, given our salary cap space, and we've never drafted -- in my 30 years of ownership, we've never been drafting as low as we're drafting. We're counting on our internal people whom we're still learning and evaluating. So, we're going to let that evolve and develop, and before the key decisions have to be made, we will appoint someone. At the same time, we'll probably start doing interviews and looking at people from the outside. But my bias has always been, in all our family companies, to try to develop a culture from within where we understand one another.

my translation is:

"These player personnel guys have been working for us for years, but we're still not 100% sure whether any of them has the goods to be a GM who is the ultimate-maker. After the top external GM candidates are probably already snapped up, we plan to go through the motions and interview a couple of guys outside of the organization so you can't accuse us of not doing that but then we're just going to hire one of the guys we're not sure about currently."

Today seemed like amateur hour at Gillette. I hope that it changes into a professional operation sooner rather than later.

Listening to the clip, it sounds to me like he is saying “we are taking a QB….. duh”

Guessing the personnel dept likes Maye and Daniels a lot and will take either

Assuming it is Daniels, his rushing ability will help keep defenses from being as blitz-heavy, so perhaps your OL doesn’t need to be quite as incredible as it might have to be for more of a pure pocket passer. If they take Daniels, grab a tackle with their second pick, and sign guys like Michael Pittman Jr and Dalton Schultz in free agency, they’ve got potential to be solid. Pair that with a great defense…
Why would he just tip his hand like that though? Does that mean they like and feel comfortable with all 3? Just seems wild.

It's far too predictable which posters will take issue with Mayo bringing up diversity and being a black HC. In an otherwise benign press conference, it's not difficult to see why certain people will be agitated about it. Trigger-some stuff from Mayo.

Its relevant to him and relevant to many black players. Learn to deal with reality, bud.
There has been a long history about the Boston sports environment and whether it influenced black players wanted to bring their families here. And, yes, this issue is important to Mayo. Mayo isn't going to ignore the issue, as so many have in the past.

Celebrating being the first black coach in Boston history on the week of celebrating MLK is important to Mayo. If you don't want him to speak about such things, OK, whatever floats you boat. I didn't like listening to all the lacrosse and Navy coaching stuff.
You mustn't have visited Boston in the last 20+ years.
50+ years

Lol the press conference is not about winning. It's about him becoming HC and celebrating it. That is a big deal for anyone and he is allowed to express his pride and what it means to him.

Plenty of other opps to talk about
It would have been fine with everyone if Mayo was proud to be the first Ukranian patriot coach.

I grew up in a projects in a part of Boston (nunya) with a moderate amount of diversity. My neighborhood was tight. Nothing else mattered. We were tight. Any other neighborhoods were not accepted easily. Back then in Boston that usually meant a predominant ethnicity associated with your area. Reference to other groups usually involved ethnic slurs and seemed fairly nonconsequential then. Now, I can't speak for the adults cause back then kids just STFU and nothing was ever explained. I had to answer to this label as a Bostonian in the Infantry. All anyone ever heard was the reporting on bussing. And while it was an awful experience some still think they know the whole story down to the individual. It's tiresome.

He has become much worse over the last 5 or so years. Normal with his age but still sad to see. Time waits for noone.
much like our political presidential candidates who will both be in their 80's when elected

No, it wouldn't have. If the new coach took his first press conference as an opportunity to talk about the Ukrianian-Russian war and perogies we'd all rightfully wonder wtf that had to do with anything involving winning football games.

Exactly. It was yet another clown statement by someone who's been acting the clown all day long.
That’s not fair. I thought he was very personable and down to earth. Came across like he was holding back. Seems like the kinda guy that wouldve talked all day long if given the opportunity. Im excited for him and the team. Then again, I like Dan Campbells moxie alot as well but his schtick seems to rub people the wrong way. We’ll see how Mayo grows into the role. I hope he doesnt change too much. He’ll end up like Flores.

I wish Mayo the best and applaud his career as a player turned coach. I can't help but view him as a fall guy for struggles that will continue with this team. I wouldn't mind being changed from skeptical to inspired, but let's wait and see.

QB has to be the pick unless you are really confident Maye and Daniels are going to bust. The only way that Daniels or Maye isn’t a Patriot next season is if Justin Fields comes here with MHJ as our pick.

Weigh which is more likely.

Interestingly this Williams dipshit could ruin it because Bears might just take Maye, Commanders Daniels (or swap that) leaving Williams who REEKS of red flags. And 3 is way too high for anyone else.

Best case is someone trading up for Williams but not sure I see it happening

Press conferences and after game interviews are going to be totally different from what we're used to. It worked for BB for years and we loved him for that, but the NFL has changed, I'm looking forward to this new direction and to see what Mayo and new guys can do with this team. Can't be a worse ****show than we've seen the last couple of years.

If the Commanders take Daniels over Williams, it will be like a team taking Trey Lance over Mahomes.
