I'd assume they'd have a say in which QB to draft and which WRs to go after. The big appeal is that if you're a WR coach or a TE coach, being an OC is one step closer to being a HC. It might not be the most attractive OC job out there, but it's an open one.

I get it is a step up, but with the "talent" on this offense right now, it would not be a quick stop before moving to HC.

Yeah I get it, but I'm sure people said the Lions would never be able to attract quality coaches either. Things change.

If they had a choice to make on which QB to take at 3 maybe, but if they pre decide to take QB at 3 no matter what, I would not count that as a positive.
and they would have input on who we re-sign and on free agency
and they would likely be able to hire most of their position coaches

An OC here could have almost a clean slate with input on the spending of considerable resources.

IMO, Mayo does need a senior advisor or Asst coach to help manage the Offense. I suppose this isn't necessary if both Wolf and Groh stay, but I think that is unlikely.

I would like Little Steven to stay in that capacity. I think he can maintain continuity on the defensive side of the ball.

One just wonders if he is waiting to commit to the team until his fathers situation shakes itself out.

Right, and as we'll have to hire a OC (and really an entire offensive staff) before we can fill any of those holes, it's currently an unattractive option.

Think about it this way, what exactly would draw an upcoming coach to this offense. At the moment there is no one to build an offense around.
I think anyone who desires the OC role would be interested.

Whatever coaching staff remaining that is already sabotaging Mayo's work at the end of the season and sowing "resentment" needs to go. Clean em all out.

Get the racists off the staff

Curious, what quality coaches are you talking about? Campbell? Or are you talking about the OC Johnson who developed internally?

...also am I the only one that didn't realize Mark Brunell was their QB coach?

Yeah, both the HC and the OC. But I meant it more as the Lions used to be a place for coaches to go to die and now it's changed. That's how the NFL is and why coaches are willing to go to places like the Commanders or the Patriots.

It will probably change now because they now look like a good team....the HC and OC, neither were "hot" hires.....the HC would have been looked at as a retread when he was hired, and the OC was a QA coach that I believe was brought to Detroit because he shared time with Campbell at Miami.

Yep. That's what winning will do for you.

But we are being told nobody wants the OC role working for Mayo.
You need stop spreading rumors.

I thought Waldron was a top OC this cycle.
The Bears hiring him could signal something other than drafting a new #1 QB...
- they have him do the magic he did for Geno, and try to reap all the investment into Fields.

Passing on Kingsbury is definitely something to monitor regarding Caleb.

Boston media is obsessed with over analyzing power dynamics and trying to build stories about it. Mayo is the head coach, he decides his coaching staff. But others offer their input and perspectives as well. I work an accounting job. We hired a staff to work under me. I didn't make the decision alone. We had an interview panel and we all gathered feedback at the end. My opinion weighed heaviest since I was the one who would be managing them, but others have their own perspectives as well. We all sat and discussed and they helped me to make a well-informed decision. That's how collaboration in organizations work.

Nick Caley was also the fullback coach. I loved James Develin in short yardage situations. I wonder Caley would bring back that concept.
