Phill Perry wrote an article the week prior to Mayes Concussion, that maybe Alex Van Pelt should get more creative and have some designed runs for Maye". Say what? So he's already having to scramble maybe as much or more than you want from pressure, are you going to add in more hits on the guy. This after many in the media said not to start Maye as he'll get killed behind the that offensive line. adn Brissett got beat down with hits? Now this week after the concussion, Perry (he's usually pretty good) is saying, "AVP probably won't call many designed runs for Maye". Say what? Did AVP call any designed runs yet for Maye? I've seen none. It's all been scrambles per the play breaking down per defensive pressure and or receivers covered etc. Is Perry trying to pin that prospective injury on AVP. That run vs the Jets that Maye got hurt was not a designed run. Anyone see Maye run designed QB keepers?

Regular designed runs for Maye is a horrible idea.

Why expose the franchise QB to more punishment than necessary?

The Chiefs tried this with Mahomes and he dislocated his kneecap vs Denver. Mahomes still runs, but its impromptu after pass plays break down and there is typically nothing but green grass for a 1st down.

I despise KC.

Phil Perry is Boston's best NFL scribe, in my view. I haven't seen his comments on this matter, but if he is discussing the wisdom or lack of wisdom in exposing Maye to more contact as a runner, I agree that this is a reasonable question to pose. Our o-line, though improving, blows. Their incompetence offers Maye quite enough "opportunities" to run in the form of gigantic. ill-tempered d-linemen and their little friends headed his way, Hell bent on his destruction. On balance - but only just - I approve the idea of contributing to Maye's development by letting him play, but ANYTHING that might expose him unnecessarily to greater risk of injury is just plain foolish. Deciding to create more opportunities for him to run, beyond those resulting from the o-line's (Wolfe's) incompetence certainly falls into this category.

May I ask why? Is it because they're pretty much a lock to get their 3rd straight title, which hasn't been done since GB did it?

I won't be pulling for them but I'm impressed.

Just they get the most help from the refs more than anyone.

This isn't an idea that I'd expect from Perry. It sounds too much like pure click-bait.

The only thing about running with the ball that I want them to teach to Maye is how to get down correctly.

I think Mahomes is a remarkable player, really fun to watch. I suspect one day we are going to have to defend the idea that Brady's GOAT status is unassailable. In the end, the great in any arena are so sui generis that they are incommensurate, of course, but no one will be prevented by this from arguing about it.

Oh yeah, that. I forgot about it. And they cry like Harbaughs at the calls that go against them. Forget what I said, they suck.

A designed QB run isn't a bad idea if you're executing it properly - i.e. he has blockers in front of him and a designated lane to run through, and he knows to slide at first sign of danger. There's easy yards to be gained from those types of plays.

I don't think we run block well enough yet for designed runs.

Scrambles avoid rushers and it's on the QB to protect himself as he moves up field.

Designed runs not blocked well will free up DL and LBers to tee off on him. I've seen RBs met in the backfield too often to want to do this to Maye yet.

And I'm not typically one to play scared. I never said the state of the OL was a reason not to play Maye. I'm not concerned about last week's concussion. This just seems a little reckless.

Maybe a naked boot or something like that but not rpo yet.

What what I can ascertain, he was discussing it as an issue, not necessarily advocating a particular approach. He is very circumspect and considered in his opinions, as you imply. There ARE risks associated with encouraging Maye to run more, and those risks bear consideration, wherever one ends on the question.

They really don't. Teams said the same **** about us all the time.

What happens is, every game there are a few bad calls that go against either team. People overanalyze the calls that went in favor of the team that won and sort of ignore the lack of impact from other calls. Then if a team is winning a lot like the Chiefs or the Patriots used to, it becomes a narrative.

Penalty calls are now made on an entirely random basis. I believe each ref has now been provided with a specially-configured Magic Eight Ball to expedite the process. The league has decided that's the only fair way to call the penalites, given the level of incompetence among their amateur refs who seem these days to be hired more on the basis of demographic equity than on their competence.
