2012 Coaching Staff Changes

May 10, 2012:
The New England Patriots announce multiple changes to their coaching staff.

Most notably Matt Patricia becomes the Defensive Coordinator. Patricia had played football at highly regarded engineering school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and played on their Division 3 football team. He began his coaching career as a grad assistant with RPI - and then in a decision that must have infuriated his parents, turned down a job offer from Westinghouse to work on nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, to instead continue in football as a defensive line coach with Division 3 Amherst College. After two years at Amherst and three at Syracuse as a grad assistant, Patricia joined the Patriots as an assistant offensive line coach in 2004. Matt then worked as the team's linebackers coach from 2006 to 2010, and as the safeties coach in 2011. Patricia was the Pats DC from 2012 to 2017; he returned in 2021 after three seasons as head coach for the Detroit Lions.

The Patriots never had another coach with the title of defensive coordinator during the Bill Belichick era. The next person to have that designation was DeMarcus Covington in 2024.

In addition Josh Boyer transitioned from defensive backs coach to cornerbacks coach, while Brian Flores is promoted from a defensive assistant to safeties coach. Patrick Graham was moved from linebacker coach to defensive line coach, swapping assignments with Pepper Johnson.

Elsewhere George Godsey was promoted from offensive assistant to tight ends coach. Joe Judge is hired as special teams assistant after previously being employed at the same position under Nick Saban at Alabama. In addition Stephen Belichick is hired as a coaching assistant.

2019 Coaching Staff Changes

May 10, 2019:
The New England Patriots reveal coaching staff changes in meeting with the sports media.

Coaches still were hesitant to reveal their official titles, but they did explain what their general responsibilities will be this season. Here’s a rundown of the changes:

— Former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo is coaching inside linebackers, as he announced earlier this spring.

DeMarcus Covington is coaching outside linebackers and “the front seven.” He primarily worked with ‘backers as a coaching assistant last season.

Mike Pellegrino said he is coaching defensive backs. Safeties coach Steve Belichick confirmed he’s sticking with his position group (“They’re not escaping me,” he joked), so Pellegrino’s primary focus will be cornerbacks.

Pellegrino, 25, is a former lacrosse player for Johns Hopkins and the Boston Cannons. He joined the Patriots organization as a football operations intern in 2015 and spent the last three seasons as a coaching assistant.

Bret Bielema, the former Arkansas and Wisconsin head coach, will coach the defensive line. Bielema worked for the Patriots last season under the title “consultant to the head coach.”

Joe Judge will continue to coach the Patriots’ special teams but had added wide receivers to his plate this season. Assistant special teams coach Cameron Achord will help him manage the kicking game.

Josh McDaniels (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), Ivan Fears (running backs), Dante Scarnecchia (offensive line), Nick Caley (tight ends) and Steve Belichick are remaining in their previous roles.

The Patriots have yet to name a defensive coordinator following the departures of Brian Flores and Greg Schiano this offseason. Head coach Bill Belichick is expected to handle coordinator duties himself this season.

Previously, from April 8, 2019:
Updated Patriots coaching roster -- Patriots.com
Bill Belichick's coaching staff is in the midst of dramatic turnover this offseason.

What we know for sure is that a number of key 2018 assistants departed New England for jobs elsewhere. Defensive playcaller/linebackers coach Brian Flores is the head coach in Miami. Wide receivers coach Chad O'Shea is now the Dolphins offensive coordinator. Assistant quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski took on the same role with Miami. Cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer took pretty much the same job for Flores. And defensive line coach Brendan Daly moved on to a similar position in Kansas City.

As of yet, New England has not announced any additions to its coaching staff. But the team's official pre-draft press release does have a team roster that includes the current official rundown of assistant coaches.

It's basically the lineup of returning assistant coaches from a year ago with no title changes or additions.

The latest roster lists nine assistant coaches, including four on offense, two on special teams, two members of the strength and conditioning staff and a lone defensive assistant in the wake of Greg Schiano's resignation from a role that was never actually announced by the team.

Belichick's oldest son, Steve, who has coached the safeties over the last three seasons, is the only defensive assistant currently on the roster of coaches.

Poor Matt, the slack we cut him for his fashion sense only went so far...
Looks like he has lost several pounds - of both body weight as well as facial hair.

Well that Goodell t-shirt probably added @ 200 lbs of useless weight, so ditching that gave him a quick start

Grant Williams

Happy 51st birthday to Grant Williams
Born May 10, 1974 in Hattiesburg MS; raised in Clinton, Mississippi
Patriot offensive tackle, 2000-2001; uniform #76
Signed as an unrestricted veteran free agent on March 17, 2000
Pats résumé: two seasons, 29 games (12 starts); three playoff games; super bowl 36 champion

Not to be confused with the Celtic 2019 draft pick

Mississippi native Grant James Williams stayed in the deep south, first enrolling at Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, anf then finishing his collegiate days with two years at Louisiana Tech. He signed with Seattle as an undrafted rookie in 1996, and played in 40 games over four seasons with the Seahawks. Williams became a full-time starter in 1999, and Bill Belichick signed him as a free agent in his first year as head coach in New England. Williams split playing time with Max Lane, and later in the season with rookie Greg Randall in 2000, primarily at right tackle. The following year rookie Matt Light replaced Bruce Armstrong at left tackle, Randall claimed the starting position at right tackle - and while Wiliams played in 14 games, he was limited to four starts.

Overall the The 6'7, 320-pound offensive lineman appeared in 29 regular season games for the Patriots in two seasons, starting eight games at right tackle and four games at left tackle. In two of his four 2001 starts RB Antowain Smith rushed for over 100 yards. Williams also played in each of the Pats three 2001 postseason games, including the Patriots' Super Bowl 36 Silence of the Rams.

St. Louis was apparently impressed by Williams and traded for him on August 19, 2002. The Pats had used two 2001 draft picks on tackles (Matt Light, Kenyatta Jones) and had Tom Ashworth and Russ Hochstein available for depth, making Williams expendable. The Pats received a 7th round draft pick in return. That draft pick, along with a fifth rounder was traded to Tennessee for three draft picks. Those were used to select C Dan Koppen, QB Kliff Kingsbury and DT Ethan Kelly.

Williams played in 122 games with 49 starts over nine NFL seasons. He also appeared in seven playoff games, earning a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots. From 2017 to 2019 he worked as an offensive line coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. In 2020 he worked as an offensive line assistant for the XFL's St. Louis BattleHawks.

A deeply religious man, Williams also provides positive spiritual influence and is a chaplain for baseball's St. Louis Cardinals. In addition Williams has also coached at Westminster Christian Academy, a private christian school in St. Louis. Since 2003 Grant has been the offensive line coach at Lipscomb Academy, a private, college prep, K-12 Christian school in Nashville.

Jabaal Sheard

Happy 36th birthday to Jabaal Sheard
Born May 10, 1989 in Hollywood Hills, Florida
Patriot defensive end, 2015-2016; uniform #93
Signed as an unrestricted veteran free agent on March 11, 2015
Pats résumé: two seasons, 28 games (9 starts); 13 sacks, 70 tackles, 22 QB Hits, 16 TFL, 6 passes defensed, 4 forced fumbles; one ring

Jabaal Lamar Sheard was signed to a two-year, $11 mil contract early in 2015 free agency. That season he played in 13 games with one start, registering 37 tackles, 8 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 2 passes defensed. He also played in both playoff games, with 9 tackles.

The former Pitt Panther and Cleveland Brown took on a bigger role in 2016, playing in 15 games with 8 starts. In the playoffs Sheard had two tackles vs Houston, three vs Pittsburgh, and two tackles and a clutch pressure on Matt Ryan in the Super Bowl 51 victory over Atlanta. Sheard followed that up by wisely cashing in on a 3-year, $25 million contract with the Colts in 2017. He has started in 44 games for Indy from 2017 to 2019, and then played sparingly the next two seasons for the Jaguars, Giants and Dolphins.

March 11, 2015:
The New England Patriots will sign former Browns LB/DE Jabaal Sheard to a 2-year deal worth $11 million, including $5.5 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, Sheard gets $4 million to sign, $1 million base salary and a $1 million in roster bonus this upcoming season. In 2016 he gets $4 million in base salary with $1 million in roster bonus.

Sheard, 25, spent his first two seasons with his hand down playing end in the 4-3. He moved to linebacker his second two seasons when Rob Chudzinski and Mike Pettine coached the team.

Sheard is a former second-round pick out of Pitt whose versatility helps him. He's strong enough to play end, and mobile enough to play linebacker -- and the numbers show he is underrated.

In four seasons he has 190 tackles, with 23 sacks and seven forced fumbles. He also broke up 12 passes and had 16 run stuffs, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Pro Football Focus rated him 16th among 3-4 outside linebackers.

Feb 20, 2017:

March 10, 2017:
Former New England Patriots defensive end Jabaal Sheard, who proved to be a steal in free agency two years ago, has signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

Sheard's deal is worth $25.5 million over three years, according to Jeff Howe of The Boston Herald.

Former Patriots linebacker Barkevious Mingo also signed with Indianapolis.

Sheard arrived in New England in 2015 on a two-year, $11 million deal. He had a superb 2015 season, tallying eight sacks in 13 games. He also was the team's best run defender on the edge.

He had an uneven 2016 season, though, which likely hurt his value in free agency. Sheard was left behind as a healthy scratch for the team's Week 11 trip to San Francisco. He rebounded later in the year, dominating the Broncos in Week 15.

Overall, Sheard was part of a four-man rotation at defensive end. He shared time with Trey Flowers, Chris Long, and Rob Ninkovich.

March 10, 2017:
The Patriots traded for Jabaal Sheard’s replacement on Friday, swinging a deal for Panthers defensive end Kony Ealy. About an hour later, Sheard found his new home, signing a three-year deal with Indianapolis, a league source confirmed to the Globe.

The deal is reportedly worth $25 million, with $10 million in the first year

Happy 32nd birthday to Paul Turner
Born May 10, 1993 in West Monroe, Louisiana
Patriot wide receiver, 2018 offseason; uniform #86
Signed as an unrestricted veteran free agent on July 27, 2018
Pats résumé: one training camp

July 27, 2018:
The New England Patriots have reportedly made their first roster move of the training camp portion of the season. According to ESPN's Field Yates, they have released tight end Troy Niklas and signed wide receiver Paul Turner.

Niklas, 25, signed with the Patriots as a free agent in April. He entered training camp in, at best, the fourth spot on the TE depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen, and Jacob Hollister. He caught at least one pass on Friday in training camp, but apparently it wasn't good enough to keep him around.

Turner, meanwhile, last played in an NFL game in 2016 with the Philadelphia Eagles. The 5-foot-10 wideout was cut before the start of the 2017 season, then signed a futures contract with the New Orleans Saints in January.

The 25-year-old Turner joins a wide receiver group that still includes Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Malcolm Mitchell, Kenny Britt, Jordan Matthews, Riley McCarron, and rookie Braxton Berrios. As for the tight ends, there's still at least two roster spots to be settled after Gronkowski. It's down to Allen, Hollister, Will Tye, and rookies Ryan Izzo and Shane Wimann.

Patriots release five players -- Patriots.com
The Patriots announced today that they have released DL Frank Herron, CB Ryan Lewis, WR Devin Lucien, RB Khalfani Muhammad and WR Paul Turner.

Turner recorded nine receptions for 126 yards in his rookie season with the Eagles last year. Despite an unimpressive Patriots wide receiver corps behind Julian Edelman (suspension) and Chris Hogan, Turner was not able to carve out a spot on the 53-man roster. If Turner clears waivers, he'll attempt to sign elsewhere as a depth receiver or special teams option.

After Turner was released he re-signed with the Saints in early January, but was released three days later, ending his NFL career. Since 2020 he has worked as a college coach: for Louisiana Tech (2020-2022; grad assistant, defensive analyst, safeties coach), LSU (2023-2024 as lead offensive analyst) and currently at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte as their wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

Happy 27th birthday to Kobe Jones
Born May 10, 1998 in Starkville, Mississippi
Patriot outside linebacker, 2024 offseason; uniform #54
Signed as an unrestricted veteran free agent on August 20, 2024
Pats résumé: one week in training camp

Kobe Jones was undrafted out of Mississippi State in 2021, originally signed by Atlanta. He also spent time with Miami, Tennessee, Green Bay and Carolina. Jones played for the Hamilton-Tiger Cats in the CFL in 2024 before making what may be his final NFL stop in Foxborough last year. Jones was waived seven days after his arrival; perhaps just a warm body to play in the final meaningless preseason game. He appeared in two NFL games in 2022; one with the Packers, and one with the Panthers. Last sight of Mr Jones was last October, when he signed to play for the San Antonio Brahmas in the United Football League.

Former Hamilton Tiger-Cats DL Kobe Jones signs with New England Patriots
The six-foot-three, 255-pound defender was released from the Ticats’ practice roster on Aug. 13. Jones dressed for six games with Hamilton this season, making two defensive tackles, one special teams tackle, and one sack.

The Patriots play their third and final preseason game Sunday.

The New England Patriots were busy making roster moves Tuesday.

They have added some much-needed depth to their front seven by signing defensive end Kobe Jones and linebacker Christian McCarroll. They also claimed wide receiver Matt Landers off waivers and placed wideout JaQuae Jackson on injured reserve.

Jones has two games of NFL experience. He appeared once for both the Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers during the 2022 season. He went undrafted in 2021 after playing for Mississippi State. Jones has also spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans and Miami Dolphins. He played six games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL this past season.

Other May 10 Remnants

May 10, 1975:
Pats sign their fourth round draft pick, RB Allen Carter of Southern Cal

Carter was used primarily on kickoff returns as rookie, averaging 27.5 yards on 32 kick returns. He also 4.3 yards on 22 carries, and had two receptions for 39 yards. His highlight play came in the season finale at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore when he returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown against the AFC East champion Baltimore Colts.

Unfortunately Carter suffered a knee injury in preseason - and sports medicine being what it was at that time, a knee injury meant his pro football career was over. Carter was pulled after one kickoff return in the season opener of the 1976 season. Two days later the Pats claimed Jess Phillips off waivers from Oakland, and Carter was placed on waivers; he never played in the NFL again.

In his post-NFL life Carter became a teacher, activities director and football coach at Anaheim High School.

Patricia was the most divisive DC since 2000 with Dean Pees right there as well. I liked Bill’s defenses during the 1st Dynasty, but once Crennel left, players left and the league became favorable to offenses, the 2nd dynasty defenses were boring. However, this is pretty much the norm across the league now as all defenses look the same and don’t have an identity like they did 20+ years ago.

Agreed. I never liked Patricia's defenses.. Until we got Gilly we lacked a lock down CB a staple in the first dynasty in a BB defense. I never liked the "zone based, bend defenses.. they allow for QBs to stay in rhythm and for offenses to see the field much easier. Vrables a 1 gap, aggressive, man heavy pressure defense that's how you put pressure on offenses in today's NFL IMO.

Besides coaching on several world championship teams, Matt was a good OC for us.

Belichick just made the fatal decision to put Jones back in.

And the ten yard cushion was born.
