Re: Faulk to PUP

Stupid, stupid fantasy football.
There is no way that BB has decided before the first preseason game what he is going to do with Faulk.
You do not have to put him on reserve PUP until final cuts.
Vereen is hurt. what if Woodhead gets an injury? Or other RBs?

If Faulk simply can't be ready thats one thing, but the report says its because the backfield is crowded. You don't make that decision August 9th.
And btw, even if it were being considered, how would Reiss know?

Re: Faulk to PUP

Makes sense. I really want Faulk around as 3rd down back insurance in case Woodhead gets hurt (don't like Benny's receiving, don't trust the rookies' blitz pickup), but worst case scenario they're going weeks 1-6 without him. And most importantly, it gets him into the locker room and team meetings without taking up a roster spot.
Actually he could be on PUP through week 10.
But why really bother? He would be a phone call away anyway.

Re: Faulk to PUP

I bet they're referring to this quote from the 6th:

Meanwhile, Faulk is coming back after tearing his ACL in September of 2010. The Patriots are well stocked at running back, and if Faulk needs more time, reserve/PUP would be a way for him to stick with the club without taking up a spot on the 53-man roster. Such a scenario, while purely speculation at this point, would effectively allow the team to buy more time with Faulk and see what the picture looks like six weeks into the season.

and probably just ignored the "while purely speculation at this point" part

Sounds about right

Because if he's not on the roster, then he's not going to be in the locker room or team meetings.

Yes, but if you MIGHT want to do this, you better decide it first day of camp, since you need to hold him out of practice or the option goes away. THAT takes planning and is a decision that could already have been made.

Actually... you can hold him out until week 13 (you get up to 3 practice weeks after removing him from PUP before he counts as a roster spot).

And being "a phone call away" is pointless for a player whose leadership and locker room presence is an increasingly greater part of his value to the team as his physical skills erode.

There is a Patriots precedent for such a move, no matter how much you might dismiss the idea. In 2007 the Pats truly did have a logjam at WR after acquiring Moss, Welker, and Stallworth. They put Troy Brown on PUP and kept him there the maximum time possible, not bringing him back to the 53 until November 27 (week 13).

Re: Faulk to PUP

Faulk is under contract, first and foremost, because he's the ideal backup at a crucial position.

On the other hand, an aging and still-recovering Faulk IS just the backup; Woodhead has beaten him out for the "starting" job.

The great thing about the two is that egos aren't much in play. Neither is big enough to be an NFL feature back; both know it; both are justly proud of what they HAVE been able to accomplish in the NFL.

At least one other report talking about PUPs (not faulk but the DL guys) stated that they had to be on the PUP list when the CBA goes into effect; (NOT when final cuts are made) in order to be eligible for PUP during the season.

Not sure what is true; but it appears Pats are operating as if that were true.

Since I am not sure everyone has actually seen / read through the final CBA you certainly dont need any more Commish-Jester backroom info deals giving the pats the short end of a stick. Better to put him on PUP now even if premature.
