I see it the same way. What people construe as dancing is Maroney trying to avoid the 2-3 defenders that have brocken through the O-line and are waiting for him. Or any semblance of a hole to run through at all.Its happened to many times.Maroney is amazing when he gets some running room. It just sucks when there are 2 guys or more sitting the backfield waiting for him by the time he gets the ball handed to him.

One of the reasons I like and respect you're footbll knowlage is that you take the time to analyse the situations more. After reading you're post I think you're right, they make sense.Reflex -
I've re-watched the games and here is what my layman's eyes have seen. Before you read this, please understand that I am NOT a Maroney basher. I am a realist when it comes to this kid. I recognize the holes he had in his game coming out of college. (lack of pass blocking experience, lack of receiving experience, lack of over-all experience when compared to someone like Addai, maturity).
1) Maroney is TOO QUICK to the hole at times.. In other words, he's running into the backs of his O-linemen before they've created the hole.
2) Maroney does dance behind the line of scrimmage while he's waiting for a hole to develop. He puts a hitch in his running and it slows him down tremendously. If you watch the Jets game, it was pretty prominent.
3) Maroney doesn't bounce out enough. I don't know the reason why he's not doing it, but on several occasions the last 3 weeks, Maroney had a whole SIDE of the field open to him and, instead, ran right into the scrum.
4) The O-line still isn't comfortable with the Zone blocking technique.
I've liked what I've seen from Maroney. He's continued to develop and he's starting to see more and more time in passing situations. Still not as many as Kevin Faulk, but Kevin is amongst the best pass-blocking RBs in the league.
No he should wait a fraction of a second until the O-Line is on its blocks. DaBruinz is right. If you go back and watch Maroney you'll see him running into his own blockers. And if there still isn't a hole, bounce the run to the outside like he use to last year. Sometimes you can think to much instead of just trusting you're instincs and play. So, Maroney should stop dancing so he doesn't slow down, but he should also hit the holes slower?
I could not see the game, and I'm using a bare-bones connection that won't tolerate videos. I wish somebody would describe the run to the house.

3 I've also noticed the hitch which takes away from his momentom, Maybe he's thinking to much instead of trusting his instincs.
This play isn't his fault, and I used to see the same play with Bledsoe. Maroney is of 3-4 yards off to the LT. side of Brady. Brady then runs over to Maroney to hand off the ball. By the time the ball is exchanged the entire stadium know maroneys getting the ball, never mind the other team. It almost never works because it takes to much time to develop.I think this keeps him sometimes from just taking the 2 yards that are there sometimes and he tries to make more out of what isn't there. Every play isn't the same and he obviously doesn't do all the things mentioned on the same play. He also sometimes does just what he should do, too. And he barely has more carries in his career than Willie Parker has this year so his playing experience isn't as much as it may seem.

i think one of the probs of his running last yr had to do with maroney running to the outside TOO much....
and the coaching staff for this yr made it clear to him that it wasnt a good thing...
and now maroney just goes up the middle, no matter wut....
i think with his confidence he will learn to go where he wants, not minding the staff so much....just listen to BB
I'm with you on all of these points except one. Last year some of Maroneys biggest plays came when he cought the ball in open space. He proved to be a better pass catcher then anyone thought. I don't think that he's invoved in the passing game this year because of all the weapons they have there.I think that the two of you have valid points, as does DaBruinz, but it's really a collection of all of it. He's got a natural running style very similar to Carnell Williams down in Tampa, and that's got positives and negatives. The Patriots wanted to make changes in that style, and it's clearly still a work in progress. However, just as clearly, he's got the talent to be a quality back in this league.
If you look at the adjustments he's made from last year, you'll see:
1.) Better blitz pickup and blocking (still very mediocre, but improved).
2.) Still not comfortable as a pass receiver, but dynamic catching in space.
3.) He's doing more stuttering at the line because he's faster than the OL, and they aren't opening holes.
4.) He's giving up and just running up the backs of the OL more often. This is likely a part of the loss avoidance theory.
5.) He gets lower to the ground in anticipation of contact than last year.
6.) It seems to me that he's being coached not to go wide, because he loved it last year and avoids it like the plague this year. I think this is in an effort to limit negative plays, but the downside of such a decision is that it will also limit the 'big' plays as well.
good backs are suppossed to run well against the Jets and Dolphins especially when they run behind three pro bowl linemen...
I get the impression you wanted Maroney to fail and are unhappy he had a good game.
