Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

If only BB hadn't stubbornly kept Malcolm Butler on the bench ...
If only Jon Jones hadn't gotten hurt ...
If Branch's play hadn't fallen off a cliff ...
If Harris or Harrison or RJF had more gas left in their respective tanks ...
If Hightower, McClellin, Valentine or Rivers hadn't been on IR ...
If only Wise, Lee, Adam Butler and Marquis Flowers had more experience ...
If Long hadn't pre-emptively jumped ship ..
If Nink hadn't retired ...
If it had been Richards instead of Langi involved in a car accident ...

People will always search for that one, easily-isolated factor that they're absolutely certain would have made a night-and-day difference in an outcome.

Meh. It is what it is.

The bottom line for me is that BB and Patricia simply didn't have the horses to defeat the Philly offense that showed up that day, no matter which horses they brought out of the barn or how they lined them up.

My final take on the SB is this: BB did make 2 huge mistakes but I don’t necessarily put Butler’s benching as one of them since none of us know what the deal was with him. As I see it it the mistakes were:

1. While B.B. has a game plan for a SB in the HOF (literally), this one should go in the hall of shame. It was doomed from the jump, and there were no adjustments...the next reason reveals what’s i believe to be the reason why.

2. I can’t recall a bigger miss with personnel than Jordan Richards. At no time ever has he shown he can cover...anyone. I think he was being asked to do things which he physically can not do. To me this game was over the moment BB/Patricia decided that Richards could play a meaningful role. Guy is an ok special teams player and THAT IS IT. We actually had pressure early a few times but Foles had guys wide open on the first move...too easy.
He made adjustments. He pulled Richards for Badman.

They just didn't work.

Nobody thinks he deliberately threw it. They think he made a decision on Butler and was too stubborn to move from it when his Plan A wasn't working and he should have just gone back to the defense that made the team a top 5 defense in points on the season.
People have said BB threw the game because Butler committed egregious acts that ran counter to the Patriot Way.

BB/MP also switched the coverages for Gilmore and Rowe. There were a few other adjustments, too, whether people saw them or not, and there were other adjustments that fans obviously think BB/MP should have made.

But, y'know, the Eagles could (and did) make their own counter adjustments.

Who could it of been?
My guess it was Jordan Richards. He seems like the "Teacher's Pet" or "Brown Noser" to me. He has shown he as no business being on the team and he has taken that title from Jake Bequette. And that image of him turning away as Butler was crying left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don’t think it was Bill who necessarily was the impetus. He had the final decision but either patricia or boyer made the suggestion to bench him.
I don't think it was Patricia or else he wouldn't have even wasted his time in looking into possibly bringing him to Detroit.

My personal unfounded speculation is that not only did Butler get into a fight with a coach, but that that coach was Steve Belichick. That's about the only thing I can think of that might make BB see red enough to lose sight of the bigger picture.
This was my first thought that came to my mind. I think Butler may have disrespected his son in some way as he may not take him seriously.

How come people make excuses for all the Pats injuries or Butler not playing but don't acknowledge that Philly didn't have their best player on the field (Carson Wentz)?

Because with Foles playing out of his skull they lost absolutely nothing.

The outcome could've been worse with Wentz.
I disagree. Again, this is something you'd only recognize if ytou watched the game. But Foles was out of his mind in that game. The only other player I've ever seen that dialed in was TB12. You could see it in his eyes. He was on another level for the entire game.

Dude had a career moment. Every once in a great while a player exceeds his own abilities at a key moment. It happened to Butler in SB49, it happens over and over again with Brady in the last 5-10 minutes of Superbowls, and it happened to Foles this year. Feels bad to be on the other side of one of those, but it's hardly the first time someone's excelled themselves in the Superbowl.

Put Wentz in, and even though he's the better QB on paper, I guarantee the result is nowhere near as good. This was just Nick Foles' time. It's a thing that happens sometimes in sports. It's why we watch the games.

What about Gimore And Rowe at db with Mccourty in the nickel Chung and Harmon at safety
Takes Richards and Badenosi off the field.

That puts 2 LB's on the field....and we were playing a lot of dime in that game. The coaches obviously wanted speed out there....

Horrible locker room. No fun. Unhappy players. A lot of injuries. Kraft-BB-TB squabbles.

And the Pats were one score from winning the Super Bowl.

One play actually.....pick one of 15 plays in the game....and account for the deflected interception we had....

They had enough horses to win that day, IMO. We needed ONE STOP.....one play....

I think you have that exactly backward. This board is stringing belichick up by his gonads and honoring the poor innocent butler.
People are literally saying they believe belichick threw the game.

Just so everyone can see where I’m at. I believe butler smoked drugs and went with trashy whores.

This is your face to face with the man who sold the world

can we just name this the "angry divorcees" thread? He's GONE. A cornerback. So what?????????? The game is over...we lost on a turnover by an All World QB....stop petitioning the judge for more goddamned discovery. CASE CLOSED! On to the 2018 season.

There is no goal higher on BB's priority tree than winning Superbowls. If he benched Malcolm, then not only was it a non-negotiable dealbreaker, but it was something worth firing a man on the spot that you were counting on to help carry you.

In other words, if it's "not without merit" to bench your CB2 over whatever this was, risking your chances to win the big game in order to enforce this rule whatever it was, it was pretty ****ing serious.

My personal unfounded speculation is that not only did Butler get into a fight with a coach, but that that coach was Steve Belichick. That's about the only thing I can think of that might make BB see red enough to lose sight of the bigger picture.

"Not only are you completely out of control, not only would tolerating your behavior undermine everything I've built this franchise into over 17 years, not only has your behavior put your ability to actually do your job at risk even if I put you in the field, but you ****ing hit my son. You are done here."
It would've leaked by now if it were something so egregious like you're assuming.

Seems like most people are open to just about any possibility that involves Butler being at fault - but no way could it possibly be a Belichick screw-up.

It did leak. Whether you believe it or not is up to you.

Most people also refuse to believe Butler screwed up.
