Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

He had a Shakey season but he looked like Deion in his prime next to Jordan Richards being on the field
Does anyone think the treatment of Butler and the crap from lane Johnson and Gronk turmoil could make free agents pause before signing with the Pat's?

“Everyone else playing checkers in free agency while Belichick plays chess with comp picks.”

Everyone else playing checkers in free agency while BB plays chess with comp picks and the Dolphins front office who justs randomly keeps putting the pieces into their mouths to eat them.

Nope. Getting paid less money than in other places might thought.

Time will tell, but I am surprised he was valued by any team this much. Well done MB. Keep making plays. There was something about him that rub BB.
I think I expected something around 4/44, or 11m AAV. We’ll have to see if TEN made the right call here or not, but they’ve got the money to take the risk.

they've got the money, and a new coach who wants to establish a particular kind of locker room culture. That last part may be a factor in the payout.

Everyone on that list better be over 5’11” though. Last thing I need is to spend super bowl week stressed out wondering if our starting corner is gonna be benched for someone taller. I ain’t got time for that.

First world Patriots fan problems...

I will miss Butler greatly - he brought ‘tude to our defense. Made a ton of plays when average players would have just accepted the completion. If he was not himself this year I think it may have been because there was tension with him and Belichick. The year was a mess after the contract blow-up and the Reiss article that followed.

Sucks losing some of these guys but the comp picks are a hell of a lot better than getting nothing in return. And getting to trade them gives them much more flexibility.

No, you would just complain when he didn’t.

It’s a shame that every thread in this forum is essentially turning into the game day threads, where all people do is cry, whine, and ***** at every move.

Excellent post @Ivan. As each season comes and goes, it's getting harder and harder to have good, intelligent football discussions on here that made me want to join many years ago.

Our allure may have been diminished a bit. No way anybody will take less to come here though. BB will have to go for people like Rodney, the discarded souls to shore up this team. Come to think about it, it has always been this way though. I can't remember any free agent other than Chris Long, taking less to come here.

1. Good luck to Malcolm Butler. Even if he was a turd this year (and I’m not saying he was), his play at the end of SB49 was probably the best moment of my life as a Patriots fan.

2. Tennessee has now paired Ryan and Butler at roughly $22M per year. That is far from a shutdown duo that should command that price. They’re insane.

All these corners being signed. Pats might think Rowe's good as the second corner or they will draft one early.

I like Rowe better than most here. There are so many big WRs these days. With 2 tall WR, we can still develop or acquire one or more shorter CBs at reasonable money.Sure wouldn't want to have to justify what Tennessee paid for 2 decent, but limited corners.

I’m glad the Patriots didn’t give him that deal. I thought Jonathan Jones outplayed him last season. I think they could use the #31 pick in a CB and upgrade the position.
This is the right position on Butler.

He gave us the play of the decade against the Seahawks, and then he gave us 2 great years and another good one. That's a lot of value for an UDFA who no one else wanted. BUT he wasn't worth near what he got from the Titans, though on a lot of levels I couldn't be happier that he got paid, just not on the GM level.

I am really confident that we can get the same production we got from Malcolm from some combination of JJones, Rowe, and dare I say CJones. Personally, I think the Pats will be fine at CB even if they don't draft one high. I think that we'd be better off drafting a LB/DE/hybrid at #31 if one is worth that high a pick is available. But that's just me.

The good news is that we should get at least 2 comp pick in 2019 from moving on from Butler and DA. I don't see the Pats making any high-end FA moves this spring. We need those picks next year, since we only have 4 or 5 of our own draft picks in 19.

I can see the Pats allowing Nate to see what's out there like we did with Hightower; but I hope he'll give the Pats a chance to match it. I'm not looking for 3 high comp picks next year.

BB has his few blue-chippers, but doesn't have the draft capital to back-fill (no high 1st round picks). So he plays tier 2.

Think of it this way: in a big fantasy MMO, the new "best" sword will cost you many times what the old "best" sword would cost, and the old one is maybe 1-3% weaker.

BB buys old swords.
