Easily the best defensive player tonight.

EDIT: But all signs indicate it would be extremely unlikely to keep him once his contract ends, without coughing up serious amounts of cap space.

If your Belichick the GM, how do you manage to preserve this secondary that you've worked so hard to build over the last 5+ years?

Replace Ryan through the Draft

The 2017 crop of defensive backs is shaping up to be the most talented and deepest in years.

The top dozen cornerbacks on early draft boards include a plethora of players with elite size, speed and experience. The Florida duo of Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson will vie to be the first corners to come off the board, both are press man specialists with great length. Marlon Humphrey of Alabama and Desmond King of Iowa are both well rounded corners who excel in coverage and run support.

Sidney Jones is poised to follow fellow Washington corner Marcus Peters’ footsteps as a bonafide ballhawk. Adoree’ Jackson is supreme athlete who is electric with the ball in his hands. Cordrea Tankersley from Clemson, Cameron Sutton from Tennessee and Marshon Lattimore from Ohio State are all lanky corners with strong man coverage skills. Another Buckeye, Gareon Conley, is a polished prospect with ideal size.

The draft class also provides a pair of top slot corners. Both Jourdon Lewis from Michigan and Tre’Davious White from LSU have extensive starting experience and refined technique. There is even more quality cornerback depth with Day 3 projections. Washington’s Kevin King, Michigan’s Channing Stribling, West Virginia’s Rasul Douglas and Minnesota’s Jalen Myrick each possess the tools to develop into NFL starters.

Replace Ryan through Free Agency (or trade perhaps?)

Other notable names atop the 2017 free agent cornerback class include Trumaine Johnson, Stephon Gilmore, A.J. Bouye, Morris Claiborne, and Prince Amukamara.

Extending Logan Ryan's contract in a team-friendly deal (Re-Sign the Beast?)

Although New England will be able to, in theory, offer Ryan any contract they want (due to their cap space flexibility), the thought here is that they will let him go once he fields stronger offers from other cornerback-needy organizations. With Malcom Butler hitting restricted free agency this offseason, and resources already being heavily invested in the secondary (McCourty), the Patriots simply will not pay "CB1"-type money to more than one player.

That said, here are some projections that might be a starting point for contract negotiations - in the slim chance that the Pats commit to re-signing Ryan

Low end: Robert Alford, Atlanta Falcons -€” 4 years, $38 million, $21 million guaranteed.

High end: Darius Slay, Detroit Lions -€” 4 years, $48.15 million, $23.1 million guaranteed.

Just right: Jimmy Smith, Baltimore Ravens -€” 4 years, $41.1 million, $21 million guaranteed.

Top 10 players tonight.

#1 Ryan
#2 McCourty
#3 Edelman
#4 Lewis (The fumbles keep him from being higher).
#5 Solder
#6 Hightower
#7 Branch
#8 Butler
#9 Chung
#10 Hogan (if he played more of the game he'd be higher)

He played well, we shall see how he does next week. Obviously he playing for a contract :p

If his price is high I think he gone next year.

As per @long distance's suggestion for threadoholics, I decided to go back and re-edit an old thread with new topic, rather than create another one ;)

Just wanna get you guys to don your GM caps and contemplate how to preserve our secondary with Ryan hitting free agency

He'll be re-signed.

Player A is asked to occupy a blocker and a gap so player B can get an angle to make a tackle. On TV, it looks like Player A was blocked, while Player B made a good play, when in fact they both made equal contributions.

This happens three or four times and the TV announcer is saying, "It is a good thing Player B is having a good game because Player A keeps getting stonewalled."

Ryan did have a good day, apparently. But to suggest that we can accurately identify which players had the best day, without an exhaustive look at the 22 film, plus knowledge of what each player was asked to do on each play, is crazy.

I have always been a Ryan fan and it would suck to lose him. People take him for granted and forget how much of a struggle it is to get consistent play from this position.

1. He is extremely durable. There was a time when wrs playing corner was almost a common occurrence.

2. He has shut down some premiere wrs such as Hopkins and D. Thomas and made it look easy.

3. There is a limit to how much he can suck. He has never went to Starks, Wheatley etc levels even once.

4. What else are we going to spend the money on?

5. The draft is unreliable(have you seen Cyrus) and we haven't have had the greatest results with bargain shopping in fa(guys like Fletcher get signed)

Draft or sign a taller DB with good-to-great coverage skills.

If only it were that easy. ;)

I'd like to resign Ryan. His prep work and attitude will be hard to replace otherwise. There are more talented players around, but not many who have the mental part of his game. He's a studious player with a knack for big turnovers. He's also a strong run support corner. That's valuable in or scheme.

If we're not able to resign him, then we'll have to hope that Jones can give us much of what Ryan brought to the table. I'd like to bring in another draftee for competition, but it would be nice for our second rounder to show some of the skills that earned him a top 64 pick.

Rasul Douglas is my favorite guy in the draft this year. He's not a slot guy like Ryan (whose value is that he's able to play inside / outside and understand scheme demands), but he's a long press corner (6'2 #210) with great instincts and ball skills. He had 8 interceptions this year, and they were well earned breaks on the ball, not just gifts from errant throws. He's a big sturdy player who could lock down bigger players.

cyrus jones will be that guy..........forget his rookie season.....this guy has the skill and needs a vet offseason to be all he can be

i think w/ how the cap is growing, and w/ the cap space we have, BB will look at some of the guys he has in teh building already, and not "overpay" but our designation of their value might be closer to that of other teams this year, unlike in years past when we usually see their value as extremely lower

Resign him
Have folks forgotten about the disasters at CB that BB has drafted, even with high round 2 picks?
Plus, aside from Revis for one year and Talib, lots of misses on trades & FA.
Point being drafting a cheap player is a crap shoot signing another vet @ $$ is a crap shoot at way under 50%, so if Ryan can play as I observe he can, try to sign him, dropping out only if the price gets absurd.

The trading of Jones and Collins I believe was done in large part so we could gain assetts now, knowing we were not going to resign them.

Ryan is one of the players I think they are looking at. Hightower is clearly in their plans. And hopefully we can extend Butler. Really would like Bennett back if he does not ask for top dollar-over 30 players who are not a QB should not get top dollar.
