Yeah, it's possible that they could just slap the RFA (or even franchise) tender on him, but that would just be delaying the issue, rather than dealing with it.

But let's face two important facts: (1) Gostkowski has the strongest leg in the NFL. (2) There are two AFC teams—Denver and Indianapolis—that would DEFINITELY be interested in signing Gostkowski if he ever reaches free agency. Maybe not enough to cough up first-round picks, but certainly enough to consider making him the highest-paid kicker in the game. And imagine what he could do playing half his games in a dome. . . .

It may not happen during the season, but I sincerely hope the Patriots do extend Gostkowski ASAP.
 
Guy pounds it through the end zone on every kickoff and makes all the field goals we need him to make.

BB knew what he was doing when he let Vinatieri go.
