What's next for Patriots at receiver? - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Branch and Givens...that's it. Why anyone would have confidence in them drafting a WR is beyond me but they have no choice now. I think this could have a big impact on this season...a huge waste of a year IMO if they pick another JAG in the draft

I am tired of this the Pats can't draft WRs talk. You know the Pats couldn't draft a pass rushing DE until Chandler Jones. The Pats couldn't draft impact TEs after spending many draft picks including two first rounders until Gronk.

The fact of the matter is the Pats have only drafted three WRs in the first two rounds (all in the second round) and are 1 for 3. They drafted Price late in the 3rd (26th pick) and Tate mid round in the 3rd (19th). All the rest were late round picks. Third rounders and below are crap shoot.

The Pats haven't had much success in the draft with WRs. But then again, the Pats haven't really used high draft picks very often for WR in the draft. So maybe if they make WR a top priority, they will have better success. The Pats have been drafting far better over the last three years which means the scouting may be much better than when they drafted Tate and Price.

So you are confident in them in picking a WR in the draft? Based on all of the picks in the past? or are you not even looking at the pats past problems at that position. Even if they haven't used top picks on WRs...they still suck at drafting WRs. Anyone can see that

or Welker and Lloyd

It is not clear that a couple of million would have gotten Sanders.

What Deus is saying is a measely 2-4 million dollars and our WR duo entering the draft is Welker-Sanders.

Ok, but our fundamental offensive problems would be the same with that tandem. Right?

Makes more sense than ever to make an offer for Denario Alexander and draft a future receiver in the second.

Maybe Patriots pick a WR in 1st round. Move up? Though which WR is a clear winner? Patriots route-tree is complex, so, the draft pick should be from a good coaching school (ala, Saban)...

If gronk and or amendola miss any time the pats will struggle. I will post it again in 10 min

That seems to be your go to. I can help. If Brady misses the season I think the offense will struggle.

True, but we would feel much safer going into the draft and could afford a gamble on a 6'4 deep threat Justin Hunter.

BB's philosophy is to look at what worked and what didn't. Assuming competence and honesty, he's looked at the fiascos that drafting WRs and since Branch and Givens has produced. Maybe Josh McD who picked good WRs at Denver has more input this April. In any case, one or more of our 1st 3 picks needs to be WR. The more is if we trade down in the 1st for extra picks.

I'm not jazzed on the WR position right now but of all the options we've discussed I'm not sure any of them are that great. Ammendola and Sanders vs Sanders and Welker vs Welker and Llyod are all at best lateral moves so not overpaying for any of those combos is ok IMO.

Based on the last three drafts, I have the confidence that the Pats will do well in the draft no matter what position they draft at. The last three drafts have been some of the best drafts of the Belichick era.

I don't like that they haven't gotten a WR, but the last two high WR picks were for dumb reasons and against the scouts' suggestions (Bethel Johnson stopped Kraft from attending pro days with a stop watch and Urban Meyer talked Belichick into taking Jackson). I have faith in Caserio and his scouting staff who have hit a lot of home runs over the last three years.

Well said.

It's easy to draft a Larry Fitzgerald when you have the third pick in the draft.

It's easy/easier to draft an Andrew Luck with the 1st pick in the Draft when you make such terrible personnel decisions that you tank a season and end up coming in last place.

The Patriots have been drafting very late to last (3 Superbowl wins and 2 Superbowl appearances netting us second to last picks) in every round for the past 12 straight years. It has a real and tangible impact when we draft virtually last year after year after year.

Our first round pick this year is 29th. Practically the 2nd around.

Our second round pick is 59th. Might as well be the third round.

Of course Belichick has made mistakes, but what other team consistently drafting so late as we do year after year has had better success?

Steelers have done quite well drafting WRs in different rounds....

I disagree 100%.

It is NOT an excuse that we "pick last in every round". Just consider us as not having a 1st and picking at the TOP of every round but the first.
================================
High first round picks are for losers, literally.
================================
We have done as well with our draftees than almost any team in the league. HOWEVER, we have drafted receivers in the past 10 years and all have failed. The best we have gotten is a punt returner. The only way we got receivers with draft choices is to trade for players, as we essentially tried to do last week.

So, we don't do well at drafting wide receivers. Perhaps we do better in free agency. Perhaps, our history will improve from the many disasters. However, last year we did very well in getting Lloyd and Branch.
===================

Personally, I would be fine with re-signing Lloyd and having Josh draft a wide receiver or two. he certainly has succeeded in the recent past.

They're not without their misses, though. They took Limas Sweed in the second in 2008. If the Pats hit on a few WRs in the near future, then people will forget about their misses too.
