Good point. His new deal probably has a lower cap hit for the salary portion than the old one. (Miguel can tell us if there's some rule that says otherwise.)

The bonus is as it was, just moving (I imagine) to a different line on Miguel's spreadsheet.

Could it be that the plan was to resign Washington next week, so his salary would not be guaranteed, but the interest showed by other teams forced the Pats to resign him now?

There were reports all week his locker was still in place so the plan looked like he was going to be back and he is.

its nice to full out the roster with a vet who has played in some big games but I see no need for him he's the worst of all the RB's on the roster as far as running the ball and I would Rather see Josh Boyce doing the KR's

I don't get this mentality at all. He was an elite KR last season and we haven't had a decent KR since...well...um...anyway, it's been a while.

I hate the move!!!! I am glad that Washington is back with the team; he can not only return but he is a serviceable receiver. The problem I have is that it appears to be penny-pinchng economizing move for a team that is swimming in dough. It is obnoxious.

Don't see much to indicate he's gone from elite to garbage in a year.

Club rules. Where I play, if you take a Mulligan you have to buy a round of drinks. Looks like Belichick plays at the same place, only pricier.

I like having Washington in return duty.

Can you explain your comment? Where is the penny pinching re-signing him now?

I think the team is fine at the moment, reportedly around 7m under the cap, but I'd hardly consider it to be "swimming in dough" or "obnoxious" either.

Cap moves are made for the long term future too, so they are well aware of their plan over the next few yrs which consists of carrying over money to next season--so on and so forth.

That 7m being carried over (if they don't spend anymore this year) could be the difference between Talib wearing a Patriots uniform or another one next year as an example.

I haven't a clue what folks are complaining about. Four players had the opportunity to find a better deal this week. All have returned. All 51 of the final cutdown roster are still here for Game One (plus addition Chris Barker and Chris White). The amount of cap room available is neither tight nor excessive. As I said earlier in the week, most of us would have used a couple of million better, but we are in a very reasonable place with regard to the cap.

Is it possible for them to gain cap room (but not cash) via the veteran minimum salary benefit where they couldn't before because his signing bonus was too large?

They may not of, that’s why I said probably, I assumed maybe he returned for less money or at least it was not guaranteed, apparently I was wrong with that assumption. Thank you for providing me with the accurate information.

if he can still do it would be great to see a good KR back there for the pats I think Brandon Tate was the last pretty good one they had
