LB Briggs to sit out season.. We can't- can we?

He's already made it well known that he does not want to play in a 3-4 defense.

We could trade them Colvin even up for Briggs.

Colvin isn't really that good, not worth $7M or whatever he gets.

That's about what Briggs would want.

Not that I want Briggs necessarily.

I also think there's a chance Colvin gets CUT.

Good player, but I don't think it would fit in our system....He said 4-3 not 3-4,I guess this sums it up...

Colvin is good actually. maybe not worth 7 mill because its close to Thomas but hes definatley a good player and a solid LB

Chicago's Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs and the Bears is officially moving to the next stage.
"I am now prepared to sit out the year if the Bears don't trade me or release me," Briggs told FOXSports.com via cell phone Monday. "I've played my last snap for them. I'll never play another down for Chicago again

.

Sure he's going to forego
the 7+ million franchise salary!

Wouldn't anyone?

We couldn't possibly sign him? W e do have two #1's
Can you image......

There's no chance he'll sit out the season. Players threaten this but almost never go through with it. He may be done with Chicago but he'll end up somewhere. The question is who wants him? Sounds like a malcontent.

shut up

that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

Colvin proved himself as a playmaker this year and he's only going to get better.

Your name is familiar. are you a troll

At this point, with Vrabel, Colvin, and Thomas, Briggs just isn't a huge need. It's not one of those 'where would we play Willie McGee' things, it's a question of value. His value to the Patriots is not as high as his value to some other teams.

Too bad for Chicago and their fans. It was miserable going through this with Branch. No happy endings.

It's very different sitting out with a franchise tag and holding out in the last year of a rookie contract.

In Branch's case, his salary was low and the bonus upside was extremely high. Risking eight or nine game checks for the chance to get a $10mm salary in his situation, economically it made sense.

In Brigg's case, the franchise tag is all salary. He'll be missing out on up to $500K per game or so - whatever the franchise tag # for linebackers is. Hard to imagine him actually sitting out.

What a difference this year, with Asante saying everything is cool in his franchise situation.

If Chicago decides to trade, they'll surely find someone willing to offer at least a first for Briggs.

Colvin had how many sacks? 5? 6? 7? He gets what, $1 per sack? A little rich, I don't think that's going to cut it.

He did have one good play in the SD game, but overall, I don't think he's worth the money.

I don't think so. A restructuring could be in order, but we're not going to cut him.

Colvin is on this team... He may be the second or third best LB on the team behind AD and Vrabel..

I don't want him. I have no idea why anyone would want him. Has everyone here forgotten the "We are building at team, not collecting talented players" comment of Pioli?

After Deion, I have no sympathy for holdouts (though Briggs isn't in the same turd class as Deion. Briggs honored his contract. I am jsut leery of guys willing to hold out.

Few players actually hold out, but it seems that most that do are somehow related to the Bears. Briggs. Ogunleye became a Bear when he held out from Miami, and remember Al Harris and Todd Bell? Those two guys in the Bears defense who sat out the 1985 season? Without them the Bears had the best defense in the history of the NFL, and they didn't even get a superbowl ring. But then, neither did Ogunleye or Briggs

Briggs wouldn't fit in with the Pats. They need players who put the team first. It's obvious he wants a big payday, however, so unless the Bears satisfy his salary expectations, they'll end up trading him.

Hmmmmm. Could the Jests and Phins be a landing spot for Lance once the requisite draft picks are sent Chicago's way?

These teams in particular are playing catchup with the Pats. This would give them the press they need. And it's just a matter of a certain amount of money when he starts to love the 3-4.

Trade them Ass-ante and a 3rd rounder or even the 28th pick.

Asante has a lot more value to the Pats defense right now than Briggs. Asante is projected to be the Pats #1 corner and it looks like the extension talks are going well.

Why give that up for a guy that would be the Pats #3 or #2 OLB (ASSUMING he can beat out Colvin). How does this make sense when Briggs is ALSO looking for a huge payday?

BTW Guys Adalius Thomas is the linebacker who has led the NFL the past 3 years in total sacks, not Briggs. I say AT is the better player, fits our system better, and we didn't have to give up a draft pick for him. I just don't see a fit for Briggs in NE after we just signed AT.

Vrabel can play inside too. We'd have Colvin, Vrabel, Thomas and Briggs who can play outside and Bruschi, Thomas and Vrabel who can play inside. Lots of rotation options there. And much needed depth.

Yes but Vrabel prefers playing on the outside and is probably a better player for us on the outside. I also don't see how we can make the salaries work out as Briggs will be looking for a deal at least as rich as A. Thomas.

There are some pretty good indications that the Pats and Assante are close, so the trade talk is what it is..talk.

Remember how hard it it to stay at the top, look at Chicago.. they went to the final dance and have had probs ever since.. Lovey's contract and now Briggs, credit to our franchise as we pretty much stayed low key and had minimal distractions. The only exception was the Deion affair and some players who wanted the money.. other than that we have stayed out of the news and just played ball.

There are a ton of good reasons why Briggs isn't coming here: his publicly-stated opposition to playing in a 4-3; the money he's demanding; the fact that OLB is no longer an area of need.

But there's also this from his quote on PFT: "I eventually want to be 'the man' somewhere. I want to be like him (urlacher) and have everything put on me too."

He ain't going to be "the man" here. We've already signed "the man" to play at LB with our "the man" Bruschi and "the man" Vrabel. We've got three "the mans" on the DL and another couple in the backfield.

No room here for "the man". Just for people wanting to be part of "the team".

I don't know what is more silly, people who think NE should add another expensive outside linebacker to go with the two they already have or the tool who thinks Colvin, the one LB who had any lateral movement ability last year, should be cut.

I think the tool wins the prize because he assessed a NE player by sacks alone. I guess they haven't had a good front 7 guy during Belichick's regime because no one has had a big sack year.

As an ending thought, I think people are forgetting the value of #1s. The players you draft are inexpensive and controlled for 5 years (as opposed to 4 years for guys drafted in other rounds). That alone makes the #32 pick much more valuable than #33.

He's spouting some pretty strong statements. On top of that he's stated his "refusal" to play the 4-3? Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us... *&^* that noise.
Nobody on the Patriots is "The Man" and if he comes here he'd better be ready to play whatever BB tells him to play and he'd best do it with excellence or else.
That said,our D would be absolutely incredible,bar none. A veritable wrecking machine...:robot:
Don't tempt us with a good time;the possibilities boggle the mind.:help:
