Landry-concerning if true

Not surprised just IR him already or a injury settlement.
he won't be IR'ed until the season starts... he will sit for the first 6-8 weeks of the season...

Unfortunate as he was really good for us prior to the injury. That said, we had the same edge situation in the playoffs just chiasson/jennings instead of jones/jacas and it was a top 5 defense. We’ll make it work with or without landry and next year we can finally get out of the contract.

Anything we get out of Landry at all this season will be a bonus. Another quality Edge player will be needed at some point. Hope they can get lucky and find someone in the cut downs this weekend to get us by for a while.
Keep in mind that they're 31st on the waiver wire this year as opposed to something like 4th last year.

He’ll drag his way to get paid, but this is his last season in NE.
At our expense unfortunately...his injury dates back to last season and it wasn't an ACL. Sounds like a Cooked Knee to me.

Two thoughts :

1. This isn’t a surprise to me as I believed all offseason Landry was washed and you probably would never get much out of him again. So, in that way , this news doesn’t change my BP.

2. What DOES is that it seems the operated under the assumption that he’s be back and contribute so didn’t do much. That bothers me. We weren’t great last year at edge rusher. Jacas is not known as a great rusher. Neither is Jones. They needed one dude who, even if he sucked at run defense, could get after the QB. They didn’t find that guy.

Annoying.

But, maybe someone gets cut who can help.

And finally, this roster was ASS when Vrabel took over. Couching my own expectations of how long it takes to really change that. What hurts is you have two players in Gonzo amd Maye who will take up so much cap between them (if paid and kept) that you really can’t be great many other places.
They had that guy in K Chaisson but let him walk.

Some comments on the comments.

WTF guys, what don't you understand about the term "free agent". Who knows that the Pats didn't try and sign him and he CHOSE to go back to Texas, for whatever reason.

We are ready to pay Gonzo around $35MM/yr and he missed the first 3 games, why are we so bent out of shape if Landry misses the first game or the first 4.

He was NOT washed last season, he was our LEADING sacker, and even after he came back and was clearly diminished, he provided consistent pressure and set the edge well in the run game.

Landry is in the position he is right now BECAUSE he chose to play injured the last half of the season. If he had had his surgery right after his injury or even a month after, or if the Pats hadn't added 6 weeks more to their season, he'd have been ready to play now.

People remember that the Pats during their 2-decade reign as an annual contender for the title, they usually ranked in the top 10 in team sacks, what they forget is they usually did it without having a dominant individual edge rusher. They have got their top sack rating because BB knew how to manufacture sacks schematically. Vrabel only had ONE season where he had double digit sacks as an edge player, and he was on teams that produced a lot of sacks as a team.

Last year the Pats had just 35 sacks as a team and ranked 24th in the league yet had a top 5 defense and went to the Superbowl, so I would think again about the importance of sacks as an indicator of overall success. FYI-they ranked 19th in total "pressures" (305) and 13th in QB hits. (89)

Edge is obviously a concern, but sacks/hits/pressures CAN be manufactured by good, but not great, players. We have seen it done for many years now. I think when Landry returns, say after the 4th game, he will add to the edge group and improve our pass rush rotation.

... and that's all I have to say about that.

Keep in mind that they're 31st on the waiver wire this year as opposed to something like 4th last year.
True. And that will certainly make it tougher. But it will still be an opportunity for NE to try and nab a guy who has slid through the cracks.
