I think we need to keep in mind he's a third round pick not a first rounder. I think he's shown enough to be excited about a third a rounder. But there is also just enough to trigger some past memories.
No offense, but why should that be an excuse ? Being a 3rd round pick ? An UDFA Pat’s rookie WR looks better so far. Many WRs picked after the 2nd round were instant successes in the NFL. It’s just very frustrating being a Pat’s fan as far as seeing them draft WRs. Hell, the guy drafted literally selected one pick later (TeSLaa) is having a great camp and preseason, and is bigger AND almost as fast as Williams. Watch him contribute as a rookie. BTW, Amon-Ra St Brown in the Lions was a 4th round pick who was an IMMEDIATE success.

My Pats have won again!!!

Legit question - Would it be fair to say Williams role is more play, defense, and education and slot is more intuition?
Edelman worked his ass off to learn the slot position and his recognition, quickness and toughness allowed him to play it well.

Drake Maybe asleep at the wheel.

Would have been one hell of a gain if not a TD.

Are you really asking me why I'd suggest being patient with a rookie?

But you bring up a good point Teslaa is having a better camp so we shouldn't be patient and we should just cut Williams and stop wasting time.

Williams and Chism will have their high's and lows. all rookies do. at this point, draft pedigree goes out of the conversation. players that produce, play.
I expect Diggs, Hollins, Pop and Boutte to get the game day active designations each week and see the bulk of the snaps. if and when Chism and Williams get their chance, they have to produce.

I get it but was that because he started as a QB learning a new position that other guys had been playing since Pee Wee or because slot has a lot to learn? I readily admit I have no idea.

most ex players, and coaches, who were here when JE was getting started, have said he couldn't catch a cold. he dropped everything.
Chism way ahead of JE at similar points in their careers

I wouldn't say he was asleep at the wheel. I was looking at that play more and Williams wasn't his 1st or 2nd read on this play, he looked at Hollins up the right, then looked at Douglas up the seam then he was progressing over to Williams but when he started to look that side he felt pressure coming so he escaped the pocket and saw Hollins wide open.

I think this will be used as a teaching point from McDaniels to try to be quicker on progression and while it was still a big 1st down, it could have been 6 points on the board

I expected more out of him, considering how he started. Little did I know, we’d have a rookie WR that would look excellent in the Pat’s offense, and maybe have an impact as a rookie, and it would be an UDFA receiver and not the 3rd round receiver.

Also, I still think Jaylen Noel should’ve been the pick. I understand why they went with Williams, he’s more of an outside WR, while Noel was more of a slot, but end of the day, Noel is the better receiver prospect.

I like Williams over Noel. Steve Smith Sr. said Williams “ reminded me of me,” and I’ll take 10 of those.

Mayes read is clearly the receiver in the seam on the right hash which appears to be where he threw.

For the millionth time Wbs don’t drop back look over the field and figure out who is open.
They have progressions. If progression 1 is open, throw it to him. If not go to 2, and if 2 is open throw it to him on down the line.
A later progression being open isn’t a consideration until you get through your primary progressions.

I would say that's holding on to your read a little too long.

The Play shows that the Defense are going have to account for him. Nice play to run on a video loop in the classroom to remind Maye.

Defenses have to account for every receiver. They don’t just cover the best 4 and let the 5th run free.

What are we teaching Maye? To ignore the play design and get distracted looking to see if his 4th progression got open,

He plays Madden right?? j/k

He gets open, I’ll say that much for him. So far he looks to get good separation with not a whole lot of results. He’s also dropped a couple which hasn’t helped either. I think once he gets the Maye connection going he will be lethal. It’s not as much pressure now that Diggs, Douglas and Boutte have emerged as well as Chism making his case.
Doesn’t mean you take your time either. Harry, Thornton, Baker and Polk were heavily judged by fans because frankly we really needed them to be winners right out the gate as the wr situation was desperate.

Not their first year of a new system. And first two years Allen would have thrown it to the open CB.
Can you play along!!
