you know what, I wouldn't be shocked if Edelman suddenly started going deep. He's got that great turn speed that makes him dangerous, but he's also got really good straight line speed, and you can use his agility in more than 1 way. With Meyers and Bourne handling the midrange stuff. I could see them taking some pressure off Edelman by just sending him in a straight line on a few plays. IIRC we used Welker that way from time to time, and the only reason we haven't done the same with Edelman is he's been so damn productive in the slot role, not because he actually can't do it.

On the other hand, with our current quarterback, I think we're kidding ourselves if we think this team is aiming for deep passes all that often. Cam doesn't have the arm for it. A bunch of WRs to jam up the middle, especially if they bring some size and blocking ability, are a definite asset in the run game.

Did you watch games last year? Cam isn't Mahommes with the accuracy, but his arm was still a cannon. It was his poor footwork and mechanics that did his accuracy in. He also was taking to long to process the offense. Let's see what a full off-season brings

It’s kind of smart to build a ground and pound wear your out offense as most teams are giving up size for speed on defense to combat your KC type attacks. Just need that qb to bring it all together. (Cue the we had the qb but decided to get rid of him crowd)

You don’t run to run. You run to create better opportunities to throw. You always have to be balanced. But when you are very strong at one phase that strength creates strength in the other phase.
Look at baltimore. There running game outs Jackson in the most advantageous situations to throw of any QBs. Look at KC mahomes creates a running game by making the defense gamble to stop the pass and make run d a second thought.

If we really are stuck with newton at QB for part of this year we need to be dominant on the ground to set him up in easy passing situations with play action, misdirection, screens, and east read quick hitters. He should not be throwing against a defense that expects a throw unless it’s a hopeless come from behind situation.
On 3rd and long he needs to run. Either drop back then run for the first down or scramble around to buy time so that receivers can escape coverage and he has wide open easy throws.
Because we won’t be able to throw the ball straight up we also need to run reverses, we screens etc to spread the field wide because we won’t be able to spread it deep.
It can be done but the rest of the team has to play very well to win in spite of the QB and the Mickey Mouse passing game.

By the way the only way he gets any zip on the ball anymore is with the big wind up and long delivery. It’s not good.

It's pretty clear to me that BB has decided that we'll make our yards on the ground. Everything I'm seeing from his acquisitions this offseason suggests a run first offensive scheme, maybe 60-40 run pass with some guys who can catch in a traffic to make sure we have SOME air game.

They'll throw more this year. We won't be the Chiefs but I'm expecting a competent offensive team in 2021

I’d be shocked if Edelman plays more than a handful of games next year, for any team.

You surmised that 6 weeks before the draft, 4 months before training camp and less than 24 hours after the Pats signed an uber athletic TE with elite YAC skills, a shifty, chain-moving WR and a WR who was second in the league in yards/reception last year?

That’s where he has the best fit. His route running is crisp and he’ll ideally take advantage of the other team’s nickel/dime corner (depending on whether Edelman comes back or not).

Well BB saw enough of something that he liked to bring him back. So obviously there's still a little left in the tank.

I personally think we go for broke in the draft and trade up to get the QB they want. Cam is going to be a placeholder this year.

I think he’s a placeholder for a month.
The offense is being built for the qb we draft in round 1 IMO.
newton is the back up.
No way in the world belichick sees his teams weaknesses this clearly, attacks them this aggressively then gives up a season with the worst QB in the league.
