Maybe I'm missing something, but why did they keep the rosters to 80 in the first place? [I understand it was 80 + exemptions; I'm wondering why, when they ended the exemptions, they didn't make it 83 or somesuch.]
All this roster stuff is rooted in negotiations between the NFL and the Player's Union.
(or the lack thereof)
The NFL wants 17 or 18 games and less preseason games. The Union wants no salary cap and more players on the roster.
The reason it dropped from 86 to 80 is the dissolution of the NFL Europe. There was a 6 player exemption for those players who played in Carjackistan(or whatever).
Once it folded, the Union was piss-d off and we ended uo with an uncapped year in 2010.
No contract...fewer jobs. They're going to have to dig up Jimmy Hoffa to solve this.
