Brandon Lloyd

Happy 43rd birthday to Brandon Lloyd
Born July 5, 1981 in Kansas City, Missouri
Patriot WR, 2012; uniform #85
Signed as an unrestricted veteran free agent on March 17, 2014

I have always felt that the 2011 New England Patriots vastly overachieved. While losing the Super Bowl was indeed a disappointment, it was amazing that the team advanced as far as they did. The Pats moved the ball well to their tight ends and slot receiver (Wes Welker), but opposing defenses did not fear a deep pass. For example, their number one outside wide receiver was 32-year old Deion Branch (51 receptions for 702 yards and 5 TD), who had clearly lost a step; 2012 would be his final year in the NFL. The number two non-slot wide receiver was 33-year old Chad Johnson, who had not only slowed down, but looked completely lost, having never grasped the Patriot offense. It is never good when your number two wideout plays a full season and compiles just 15 receptions for 276 yards and one touchdown. At that point in time Julian Edelman was strictly a punt and kick returner, still making the transition from quarterback to receiver. Jules, Tiquan Underwood and Matt Slater combined for a grand total of eight receptions in 2011. The need for a deep threat on the outside was painfully obvious.

The Pats signed Brandon Lloyd five days into free agency in 2012. In 2010 he had led the NFL with 1,448 yards receiving, while averaging 18.8 yards per catch. That was considered to be a big splash in free agency, though some wondered why Lloyd had played on so many teams (five) over nine seasons. Lloyd caught 74 passes for 911 yards, both numbers second on the team to only Wes Welker that season. However many fans felt Lloyd went down to the ground too quickly, without any contact after making a catch. The following off season Lloyd was released after the Pats signed free agent wide receivers Danny Amendola and Donald Jones, and the two sides were unable to reach an agreement to a contract restructure.

Brandon Lloyd appeared in 142 NFL games from 2003 to 2014, totaling 5,989 yards receiving and 36 touchdown receptions. He had a bit part (one line, one minute of screen time) in a 2013 zombie movie, and has been recording music since 2008. For the last decade Brandon Lloyd has been heavily involved in animated children's television, with over 100 credits to his name as a director, animator and storyboard supervisor.

More inspiring than Brandon’s football talent are his accomplishments away from the gridiron. Gifted with an engaging smile and an intriguing disposition, Brandon began his entertainment career at the University of Illinois choosing attend the U of I because of its prestigious journalism programming. He went on to host segments for FOX Sports Net Midwest and now can often be found gracing the sets of ESPN, NFL Network, and many others. He is known to attend high profile red carpet events such as the ESPY Awards, The Kentucky Derby, The Breeders Cup, Sundance Film Festival and the like.

Even more impressive are his philanthropic endeavors, which include Money X Live and Blessings in a Backpack. Money X Live is the premiere financial literacy program in the country that has support from national banks and top forty celebrities. In fact, Brandon hosted “Brandon Lloyd Financial Day” on November 28th, 2012 to teach children the importance of financial literacy. Blessings in a Backpack partners with America to ensure impoverished elementary school children are fed on the weekends throughout the school year. Brandon specifically provides backpacks to children in Blue Springs, Missouri.

From the football field to the studio, this media savvy leader has accomplished it all and the story is nowhere close to nearing the end. In fact, it is just beginning of a new chapter and a new outlook on what is important.

Today in Patriots History
David Thomas

Happy 41st birthday to David Thomas
Born July 5, 1983 in Plainview, Texas
Patriot TE, 2006-2008; uniform #86
Pats 3rd round (86th overall) selection of the 2006 draft, from Texas

When Vince Young led Texas to a last minute national championship over USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl, David Thomas had ten receptions for the Longhorns. That clutch performance surely caught the eye of many NFL coaches and scouts, resulting in a favorable draft status.

John David Thomas never saw much playing time with the Pats though. In 2006 the Pats were bereft of receiving talent, yet Thomas only ranked 10th in pass targets, with 16. He spent nearly all of 2007 on injured reserve with a foot injury, and the offense changed for the better. When he returned for the 2008 season Tom Brady had Wes Welker, Randy Moss, Jabar Gaffney and Kevin Faulk to throw the ball to. Thomas spent two seasons stuck on the bench behind Ben Watson on the depth chart, an afterthought to the offensive game plan.

This play from a game on November 2, 2008 certainly did not help Thomas's future:

New England tight end David Thomas had every bit as much to do with the outcome as Vinatieri.

With the Patriots (5-3) facing third-and-2 at the Colts 32 with 4:45 left, BenJarvus Green-Ellis ran for 1 yard, and Thomas drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play.

That put the Pats in third-and-16 from the Colts 45, and all they could muster was 1 yard before Bob Sanders picked off Matt Cassel's errant fourth-down throw to seal it.

On the day that NFL teams were required to get their rosters down to 53 players in 2009, Bill Belichick gave up - trading Thomas to New Orleans for nothing more than a sixth round draft pick. The fact that he replaced 'Wendy' at the tight end position by trading with the Giants for somebody named Michael Matthews - an undrafted nobody who had a total of eight receptions in two seasons - spoke volumes. The fact that Matthews lasted just six weeks with zero stats says even more about how little faith Belichick had in Thomas at that point.

David Thomas had 21 receptions for 261 yards and one touchdown in 32 games with the Pats, and also appeared in all three 2006 postseason games. He contributed a bit more in New Orleans, with 35 receptions in 2009 and 30 in 2010. Thomas played in 80 NFL games from 2006 to 2012, with 102 receptions for 938 yards, and eight touchdowns, and had one reception as part of the Saints team that defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl 44.

Joe Sweet

Happy 76th birthday to Joe Sweet
Born July 5, 1948 in Lakeland, Florida
Patriot WR, 1974; uniform #81
Signed as a free agent on November 21, 1974

The 435th pick of the 1971 draft played in four games with the Patriots, with no stats. From 1971 to 1976 Joe Sweet signed contracts with the Rams, Broncos, Rams again, Washington, New England, San Diego and San Francisco. Much of that time was on taxi squads and offseason training camps; he played in 34 NFL games with ten receptions for 173 yards and one touchdown. Joe was more successful in his post-playing days career, working for 13 years representing NFL and NBA players in contract negotiations. More recently he was employed as a mortgage and real estate finance professional, and now donates much of his time to charitable fund raising.

After graduating from Tennessee State University in 1971, Joe was drafted by the LA Rams and went on to play with the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers until he retired from the NFL in his sixth year due to injury. While still playing in the NFL, Joe obtained his real estate license and partnered with teammates and businessmen to establish a successful investment group for professional players and coaches. After retiring, Joe became a certified NFL and NBA Contract Advisor. Joe often made his clients the highest paid athletes in their respective leagues.

In addition to his success in sports and business, Joe has appeared in television commercials and feature films. He is a member of the NFLPA, NFL Alumni Association, SAG/AFTRA and the Faithful Central Bible Church Elder Board. Joe enjoys golf, traveling and spending time with his wife and daughter. He spends much of his free time mentoring young people. Joe is currently a Mortgage Banker with Emery Financial, a division of WJB. He has worked in the real estate, mortgage and finance industry for over 40 years.

Happy 44th birthday to Ben Hartsock
Born July 5, 1980 in Chillicothe, Ohio
Patriot TE, 2014 offseason
Signed as a free agent on November 11, 2014

At age 34 the blocking tight end must have had nothing left in the tank: he was released four days later.

The Patriots were Hartsock's sixth NFL team in his 11th professional season. He's also played for Indianapolis, Tennessee, Atlanta, the New York Jets and Carolina.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder originally entered the NFL as Indianapolis' third-round draft pick (68th overall) in 2004. The Ohio State product has played in 131 games with 49 starts. He has 31 receptions for 312 yards and one touchdown.

In 2013, Hartsock played in 13 games with two starts for Carolina but did not have any receptions. After the season, ProFootballFocus.com rated him as one of the league's top free agent tight ends because of his efficiency in blocking for the running game.

Veteran blocking tight end Ben Hartsock, who signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots on Sunday, was released by the team on Thursday.

The release of Hartsock, who on Monday had talked about the Patriots being the quintessential role-playing team, leaves the Patriots thin at tight end at the moment. The top three players on the depth chart -- Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams -- are all either limited or not practicing because of health-relates issues. That will leave just Steve Maneri and fullback James Develin to handle tight-end type duties in Friday's preseason game against the Eagles, with undrafted free-agent Taylor McCuller also possibly getting into the mix.

The Patriots have shuffled personnel at the bottom of the tight end depth chart since Sunday, making a total of seven transactions at the position. 1) releasing undrafted free agent Justin Jones; 2) releasing undrafted free agent Asa Watson; 3) signing Hartsock; 4) signing Maneri; 5) signing undrafted free agent Terrence Miller; 6) waiving Miller with an injury designation; 7) releasing Hartsock.

Hartsock’s playing career, which saw him play for the Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers, came to an end after the 2013 season. Two years later he was working as a player agent for Priority Sports, the Chicago-based agency that represented him throughout his career.

The 2016 NFL Draft was Hartsock’s first with his players involved. He had Joe Thuney, a guard from North Carolina State, get selected by the New England Patriots in the third round; and David Morgan, a tight end from Texas-San Antonio get selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round.

Happy 38th birthday to Terrence Johnson
Born July 5, 1986 in Braddock, PA
Patriot DB, 2010 offseason; uniform #43
Signed as an undrafted rookie free agent on April 29, 2010

The rookie from D-2 California (PA) was waived August 23, re-signed August 29, and waived again on August 31. He played in ten games for the Colts in 2010, and two more with Atlanta in 2011.

Happy 45th birthday to Sam Brandon
Born July 5, 1979 in Toledo, Ohio

On April 21, 2002 for some reason the Patriots traded up for a backup quarterback. The Pats sent their fourth round pick (#131) and a fifth (#144) to Denver in order to move up 17 spots to #117 in order to draft Rohan Davey. The Broncos used that fourth round pick on Sam Brandon, a safety who played in 63 games for Denver from 2002 to 2006.

Davey on the other hand played in seven garbage-time games for the Pats from 2002 to 2004.

Other pro football players with New England area connections born on July 5:

- Gerry Cowhig (1921-1995); grew up in Dorchester; went to Mechanical Arts High School (better known later as Boston Technical High School, and now called the O'Bryant School of Math and Science); prepped at Marianapolis Academy in Thompson, CT
The Notre Dame alum was an NFL LB/FB from 1947 to 1951; he was married to Hollywood actress Jean Willes.
WesternClippings - Jean Willes

- Dwight Anderson, 43 (7/5/81); Bloomfield CT
Dwight Anderson went to Bloomfield High School at the same time Dwight Freeney was there. The cornerback spent a couple years with the Rams, and eight seasons in the CFL - where he was a two-time all star and won two Grey Cups.

- Darrian Beavers, 25 (7/5/99); UConn
Darrian Beavers spent two years in Storrs before transferring to Cincinnati. The linebacker was drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 draft by the Giants, but he tore his ACL in a week two preseason game. Beavers spent most of 2023 on the practice squad before appearing in two late season games.

And some notable pro football players born on this date:

- James Lofton, 68 (7/5/56); Hall of Fame WR averaged over 20 yards per catch in five seasons, and was the first player to surpass 14,000 career receiving yards.

- George Kunz, 77 (7/5/47); the tackle lived up to his status of the 2nd overall pick in the 1969 draft, being named to eight Pro Bowls for the Falcons and Colts.

- Richie Incognito, 41 (7/5/83); although he is most well known for Miami's bully-gate brouhaha, he was a decent player on the field, named to four Pro Bowls with the Dolphins and Bills.

- Eggs Manske (1912-2002); the end was the last player to not wear a helmet; and part of one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history. In 1938, he was traded from Chicago to the Pittsburgh for their first-round selection (#2 overall) in the upcoming 1939 NFL draft. The Bears used that pick on future Hall of Fame quarterback Sid Luckman. Pittsburgh failed to re-sign Eggs to a new contract, and he went back to Chicago and played two more years with them.

Over the next twelve years Chicago was a perennial contender, winning four championships. In that same time frame Pittsburgh had three winning seasons, with one playoff appearance. Not only did the Steelers not have Luckman, they also had absolutely nothing in return for that draft pick.

In Eggs Manske's final NFL game he was on the winning side of the Chicago Bears' 73-0 victory over Washington in the 1940 NFL championship game. He then went onto become an assistant coach at Holy Cross and BU, then a high school biology teacher in Berkeley, California. His wife of 53 years was a two-time Olympic swimmer and diver.

It's cool to hear about people like Mitchell, Lloyd, and Martellus going on to have careers in animation and creative works for children. Never knew Lloyd did that as well, at a seemingly proflic rate.

We had no business losing that SB. We completely dominated on offense until the scoring part.

Even the 30th D in the league that year did not play too badly. To me it was squarely on offense. That dumb ass interception to Gronk above all.

Just watched a movie last night with Jean Willes - Chinatown at Midnight. Didn't expect her to turn up at Patsfans!

If you're of a certain age you'll know she was in just about every tv show of the '50s.

Only two Pats transactions on July 5.

July 5, 2001:
Pats sign seventh round draft pick T.J. Turner

Turner latest pick to sign | Patriots.com
Turner, New England's 10th and final pick in the 2001 draft, was taken in the seventh round with the 239th overall selection. He joins safety Hakim Akbar (fifth round) and cornerback Leonard Myers (sixth round) as draft picks officially under contract.

The 6-3, 260-pound Turner has massive size for a linebacker. In his 38-game career at Michigan State he posted 162 tackles, including 13 for a loss, and four sacks. His career with the Spartans was cut short by a shoulder injury suffered four games into his senior season.

Turner's injury and his size may have caused him to drop on draft boards around the league. He was a very effective player in the Michigan State system, which has many similarities with the schemes Bill Belichick likes to employ.

The Patriots now have seven draft picks left unsigned: defensive lineman Richard Seymour; offensive linemen Matt Light and Kenyatta Jones; cornerback Brock Williams; tight ends Jabari Holloway and Arther Love; and kicker Owen Pochman.

The southern Ohio-born linebacker from Michigan State made the roster and played in the season opening 23-17 loss to Cincinnati. He was inactive the following week, then had a couple of tackles in the week three 44-13 victory over Indianapolis - the game that was most notable for being the first start of Tom Brady's NFL career.

Turner was inactive for each of the next five games and was waived on Novemebr 10, a day befor the week nine game versus Buffalo. He spent a month with the 49ers the following offseason, but that was it for his NFL career.

T.J. Turner died from cancer on March 10, 2014 at the age of 35.

Turner was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2001, following an outstanding college career with the Michigan State Spartans.

Playing for the Hillsboro Indians, Turner was first team All-Ohio, All-Region, All-District and All-League as a senior in 1996.

He was named league MVP after recording 103 tackles, including seven sacks, in just seven games in 1996. He also had three interceptions and recovered six fumbles.

On offense, Turner caught 39 passes for 757 yards (19.4 avg.) and 14 touchdowns as the starting tight end in 1996. He helped Hillsboro to a combined regular-season record of 37-3 during his four-year high school career.

In addition, Turner averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds playing basketball for the Indians.

Turner suffered a season-ending injury his senior season at Michigan State, but still earned four letters (1997-2000) for the Spartans.

In his junior year in 1999, Turner was named All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention.

He started all year at middle linebacker, finishing fifth on the team with 66 tackles and recorded two sacks and eight stops behind the line of scrimmage.

A highlight of his junior season came against the Purdue Boilermakers when he intercepted two Drew Brees passes and returned one 88-yards for a touchdown.

July 5, 1979:
Patriots sign tenth round draft pick Martin Cox
Near the end of the 1978 training camp the Patriots traded 35 year-old right tackle Tom Neville to Denver. In return the Pats received a late 1979 draft pick, which was used to select Martin Cox, a wide receiver from Vanderbilt. The Pats waived Cox midway through the '79 training camp, on August 14. He didn't receive any interest from other NFL teams and signed with the Ottawa Rough Riders of the CFL. From 1979 to 1982 he averaged 17.1 yards per catch with 109 receptions and 21 touchdowns in the CFL. In '83 and '84 Cox played in the USFL, all but one game for the Tampa Bay Bandits.

This site ranks him as the fifth best Vanderbilt Commodore wide reciver of all time:
MARTIN COX, 1975-78:
- Tallied 132 catches, 2,275 yards, and nine touchdowns in his career.

Oct 23, 1976: Vanderbilt's Martin Cox (1) heads up the field on a return against Ole Miss

208 credits to her name!

She was an actress I recognized, but never knew her name until today. A lot of B-movies, and a ton of single-tv-episodes on her résumé. I just saw her on a Twilight Zone episode recently, 'Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up'.

Some of the movie titles and accompanying ad/posters are pretty funny.

Hire Brandon Lloyd to teach Boney T how to survive the ground like a professional Catch & Fall specialist.

Bingo.

**** ShEli Manning & the ****ing Vagiants to ****ing Hell; and that Right Soon.

If Bill had drafted Golden Tate instead of Jermy Cunnyham...and if a certain Receiver had turned the Correct way...

I can name Two throws by Brady even dumber than that one to Gronk.

Yep... He could've scored a TD in Seattle instead of being satisfied with a 3rd-down conversion.

We didn't score a TD on that drive, BTW... We didn't win either.
