Rotational Player and Threatening Starter's Job
Me too, as do most people, which worries me as this almost certainly means that we won't :)
We hoped Bill would splurge in FA but figured he wouldn’t. To our dismay he shocked us and went in a frenzy.
We don’t think Bill will pick a QB. To our dismay he will move up in the draft and pick a QB
The stars are aligned this year. Except those stars is the Hatred BB has for only winning 7 games this year.
Just my take. I’m usually wrong when it comes to Bill

A hundred dollar bill is still a hundred dollar bill.

Smith isnt a 1st ballot HOF TE yet he is paid like one. 3rd highest paid TE in the NFL and rubbing elbows with Kittle and Kelce. Gronk didnt cash in when he signed at 26. In fact, shortly after inking his new NE deal, Shannon Sharpe pointed out that Gronk got bent over. And, just because there is more money in relation to a higher cap, that doesnt justify Smith receiving it.

except that the purchasing power of a hundred dollar bill changes over time... just like the wages of workers change over time.

Define overpay. Who was overpaid and by how much? How much less would they have accepted if the team had a QB who (in your eyes) is competent? Can you list specific numbers?

Jonnu Smith had more catches and yards than Trautman and Bryant combined. Not only that, but if you took Trautman and Bryants TDs and combined them, Jonnu doubled that.

I don't see production from Trautman and Bryant to justify the praise you're giving them.

When you give a contract to the 2nd-best Free Agent TE that pays him as the 3rd-best TE in the Entire League when almost everyone would not place him that highly - if not Nearly that highly - then chances are that you had to overpay to bring him here...He's sure as sh!t not settling for a penny less just for the "privilege" of having Cant Newton attempt to throw him the damn ball...

Other examples of overpayment by Bill - and in the case of the WRs for the same reason - abound this week, unfortunately...

Bourne wasn't an overpay. His guaranteed money is about what i would expect. 11M guaranteed for Agholor is too much esepcially one year on from a prove it deal but if he can replicate last years numbers its a decent deal and it's only 2 years. I think people obviously wanted Samuel but maybe we tried and he didn't want to come. I think Bourne will be really effective. Of his 30 catches last year 23 were for first downs or TDs

Potentially an overpay, but hard to know if other offers were on the table and what they looked like. I wouldn't put it past LV and Mayock selling out to keep Agholor, in which case the contract the Pats offered may have been necessary.

That contract indicates the Pats really like him. Watching his 2020 film from LV (and some of his film from PHI) I can see why - extremely athletic, long, fast as heck, a true wide receiver and a deep threat, and he's a good blocker with RAC ability to boot.

Agreed that his production hasn't been entirely consistent, but he's as talented as any other receiver on the market.

Yeah he has a high ceiling but also potentially a low floor. Even at LV he had more drops than i would like but also was very productive. I would prefer someone who has been more consistent but if he can even come close to last year i'm happy.

Bill is betting on the cap going up. in 2 years this deal might be a bargain.

Either way, I think bill is paying for his talent and his future production. On the patriots he may get more targets if they use the tight ends more in pass catching roles.

Aint that the gospel truth in this instance.

In 2014, Gronk was coming off a 1124 yard 12 TD season. In 2015, Gronks new NEP deal averaged 9 million per year.

In 2020, Smith and Henrys combined 2020 production equals 1061 yards and 12 TDs. In 2021. The Smith and Henry new NEP deals average 12. 5 million each. A 40% increase in TE payroll per player and both guys are half the player that Gronk was/is. TE salaries are rising faster than gas pump prices in California.

The Pats basically had to pay a premium for the guys they wanted because they went from being a perennial Super Bowl contender to just another AFC team once Brady left and Newton came in to what was an offense with very little talent.

I think many people around the league respect Newton’s accomplishments, his leadership, his charitable work, all that, but aren’t thinking “gee, I can’t wait to catch passes from that guy” especially after what we saw last season. So the Pats had to do what (please forgive the term) bad teams have had to do in free agency: overcompensate to draw in players they otherwise wouldn’t get. They HAD to bring in talent and none of these guys are taking a discount to “chase a ring” because this is clearly a rebuild for a team still looking for its long term leader.

There are better teams with better quarterbacks these players can sign with, and NFL players especially want to maximize their earning potential given how easily their contracts can be ripped up. Belichick is doing what he has to in order to compete against other teams in the market. In other words, money talks. We just have to hope it all works out.

Jonnu’s reaction was pretty good:
“I did. As a player, I take everything with a grain of salt. I don’t look too deep into things, good or bad, because at the end of the day, I’ve gotta go out on the field and perform at a certain level. And that’s all that matters,” Smith said. “Coming from him, of course, man, you kind of maybe can’t take that one with a grain of salt. But it’s definitely a pleasure coming from him.”
also interesting that according to this article they reached agreement within an hour of the legal tampering window opening. Makes me wonder if Jonnu jumped at the Patriots‘ offer and didn’t play the field, or if they just met his asking price without hanging...
