Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

Would have made no sense for this team to carry two QB's with starting QB salaries.. this is a logical move...

Jimmy G. has been holding the clipboard in his fourth year, and only has started 2 games for the Patriots, thrown 94 passes in that time .. no NFL player hedges their bets on another player getting injured... this is good move for Jimmy G, Patriots and both teams..

Unfortunately, we were led to believe by posters on this board that Jimmy G would fetch a treasure trove of draft picks and star players.. a high second round pick was his value..

Welcome back Brian Hoyer...

Only a 2nd rounder??? I'm truly shocked. I mean why didn't they trade him to Cle?

I had postulated that there was no way he would get more than a 2nd in old threads and got lambasted for it. Matt Cassel who played a full season with great results, was traded with Mike fricken Vrabel for a second round pick. I never though JG, who only played 1.5 games, would get more than that. The fact they got a second is not bad in my mind.

They apparently didn't want to keep him too bad. The reports aren't that Bill offered him the moon to try to lure him to sign; everything is saying the team tried to get contract negotiations underway in the spring but then felt it would be "too difficult" to make a deal. If the team truly considered his talent comparable to Brady's, they'd have kept him, picked up talks in the offseason, done what they needed to do, but they certainly wouldn't have just shrugged their shoulders midseason and shipped him off.
You actually believed Bill when he said that?

I have a feeling they flip the 2nd rd pick for a player because of the timing of the trade.

Multiple sources reported that the Browns were willing to part with a 1st prior to the draft. This move smells of desperation.

Terrible team management. Belching got backed into a corner.

Just got the word. A surprise and a half.

Scary right now with no backup. If Hoyer's getting released by SF that puts him loose on the street. I hope he and his agent are in on the understanding. There are certain teams out there who might sign him just to short-circuit the Pats. I'll feel a lot better after the Pats sign him. Is the JG half of the deal contingent on Hoyer actually showing up in Foxboro?

What the **** is this BB??? 2nd rounder?! I’m control all emotions and not say anything negative......but just.....wow

Don’t know about MULTIPLE first rounders for him....but there were plenty of teams that would have traded their first

You can't pay 2 quarterbacks, Jimmy G was never taking a discount to sit on the bench.

It was obvious the Patriots had to pick one by the start of next year, they chose Brady, this pick will be 1st or 2nd pick of the 2nd round, so it's not that bad a pick for a guy in the last year.

I think all those multiple first rounders was just talk.

There has to be more coming back...right?
Doesn’t appear so....one of the best up and coming QB just went to SF .....for a 2nd....pretty shocking

It was not their high 1st but their low 1st. Considering now you get him for half season and not full season before he's FA and he can't participate in offseason/OTAs, his value is less. So the value fell from low 1st to mid-2nd which is what we got.

The high 1st and multiple 1sts were never confirmed. We were likely offered a low 1st, said no, then took at mid 2nd now.

I don’t agree with much here....except I do believe Garoppolo will be a great QB in this league for years to come....great move and trade by SF....

Well, it had been rumoured that the actual offers were much less then what the public thought. This confirms it. It also confirms Brady is here for the foreseeable future. The pick will be at the top of the 2nd so we can get a good player there. The question is, who the hell is our backup? Hoyer coming back in this deal?

Best of luck to Jimmy G. He learnt from the best. Hopefully he goes on to a have a great career.
This basically means the era of the great Patriots teams is coming to a close. A truly sad day in New England. When JG is winning superbowls in SF, everyone will wish they traded Brady to San Fran instead. Just wait.

They have those containers with an individual plastic square that represents each day of the month. Just slip one dose of your medicine in each square and set a daily alarm on your smartphone. This will help you to avoid these episodes of missed medication brother Downey

Seriously, why not trade earlier? That's a good question. Best possible answer besides extension talks weren't working out and/or simple poker playing, why not keep Brady's backup/trade bait to as far into the season as possible in case he was needed?. Then as the deadline approaches and he wasn't needed, you can sometimes get lucky to hook a GM/HC whose jobs are in serious trouble. Two guys desperate to make a splash signing as red meat to angry fans to save their livelihoods. This sometimes can allow BB to swipe their wallets just a handful of weeks before they get run out of town on a rail in complete disgrace.
Damn, too bad that didn't quite happen here but there is always next time....

The only thing I can think of is that BB wanted to see that Brady's performance was dropping off. Brady is in unchartered territory as far as age and QB efficiency is concerned and none, including the Pats FO, knows how long he can keep this up. But once they saw his performance wasn't dropping, they had to let Jimmy G go.

Damn, Bill! Why do you always have to bring us on this roller coaster ride!? All we wanted was a quiet, healing bye, but NO, you had to go and ruin it!

Who is our back up? Not Brian Hoyer!? When this came out I thought, it better just be the beginning of a bigger trade, but it doesn't look like it. Sigh. I get it. His contract is up and he wouldn't sign for back up money, so you got the best you could, but damn, that quiet bye!

??
JAG is the second coming of Brady. Surely, SF will win a few games now.
Wow....if we wins a bunch of games....will the value of the 2nd round pick we got for him go down?!?!

Who?

It's now being reported CLE never offered a 1st.

Well, my father who is a LONG time 49ers fan is completely ecstatic. So at least I can be happy for him!
He should be happy....they just scored majorly....Jimmy should help resurrect that franchise
