Jim Nantz Confused at end of game...says Jets won!

The one that bugged me was when the fumble was under review. Simms was talking about about it possibly coming under the Tuck Rule ...

"... Which of course began here in New England ..."

Nantz: "...Right, with that game against the Raiders ..."

THAT was egregious misinformation. I don't know how long the Tuck Rule has been around. But it did not "start" that night. And Pats fans know very well that it went against them and in the Jets favor — earlier in that 2001 season.
To be fair that jets-pats game isn't really remembered by that many. It became well known in that snow bowl game. Nantz can't remember who recovered the fumble let alone a game from 11 years ago

look, what the hell do you want from some media hack with a snap on , spray on hairdo?...really, Jim Nance will be remembered for being the "Stepford" Jim McKay, an empty, vacuous, grinning jackazz.

I actually kind of like Collinsworth. One of the few announcers that makes me feel like I'm getting some real insight from someone who is closely watching the game.

He is the worst one in my book. Pompous asshat.

All you Nantz haters......

I subject you to a sentence of watching a full season of 16 regular season games announced by Dan Dierdorf ..by himself and you having to use headphones for sound just so you don't miss any asshat commentary from him.

That will make you appreciate Nantz more..guaranteed

Deerdork is better than Nancyboy.

That play brought change to the game as it should of. Doesn't change the fact or make the win mean any less. The call was correct and has rarely been missed since then.

The NFL didn't change the rule at all after that game (they actually looked, and found they couldn't come up with a better alternative), so what do you mean here?

Wasn't Dierdorf the guy who had the WTF? comment in the 2007 Miami game along the lines of "Even Brady's TDs are having babies"?

i have to admit i like Nantz Simms crew

and i love to Nfl On Cbs theme song really a lot expecially the 'first on the field' one...:
that's great !!!

While you're completely right, I think you need to be a bit more forgiving of guys who have the job of filling 3 hours of air with words.

The tuck rule did not start with New England Oakland, but if you ask 100 football fans, "I'm going to say a term, and say a game you think of," most would say, "Oakland/New England" in response to "tuck rule."

George Brett also probably was not the first player to use too much pine tar, but if you say the words "pine tar" to any sports fan, they will say, "George Brett." Just how sports kind of goes.

Being wrong doesn't make it right.

The constant whining about that game is a perfect example of the power of the press, and it clearly helped diminished what was an incredible performance by our team, especially TB and AV.

Another misconception propagated by the mediots is the idea that the Pats team motto is "if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'", when in fact it was a saying that the Raiders proudly wore in the 70's.

The best example of all though are the Asterjerks, the people that wanted an asterisk attached to the Pats in 2007 if they won. That was all started when Don Shula took his petty shot at the Pats potential undefeated season by claiming it was tainted because the Pats had been fined a first round pick. Shula had apparently forgotten that his team was also fined a first round pick before his precious undefeated season happened in 1970. Woops!

I didn't say it was right. I said it was understandable.

Actually, I would go further and say it was right in spirit. Football announcers are not logicians or physicists writing in peer reviewed journals. It is clear to anyone who cares that no rule "began" with any game. Public mainstream consciousness of the tuck rule began with that game, which a reasonable way to interpret the discussion. The freaking game is synonomous with "tuck rule" for pete's sake. It is an iconic moment in football. I can't believe we are seriously bashing announcers for associatin the NEP Oakland game with the tuck rule.

More findamentally, they are announcing for tens of millions of fans. Not the ones who continue to hold a grudge that prior relatively less famous examples of the rule don't get cited. If, in the defining moments of a game during replay, they had stopped to have a conversation on the proper origins of the tuck rule, most people would have been like "WTF"? If you're an announcer calling a game that is won or lost on an empty hand fumble in New England you mention the tuck rule game.

For those still holding a grudge here, why? Everyone but Oakland fans acknowleges it was the right call and the rules committee hasn't changed it. We won the game. Time to leave the windmills alone and let others tilt at them. Its fame is due to the fact that, while correct, it was largely unknown. If a super bowl is ever lost because of a ten second run off for intentional grounding, I can confidently say that game will go down in NFL lore, not New England versus Seattle, regular season 2012 week 6.
