The post about Mayo "is a puppet" was kinda an eye opener for me.

I didn't realize there was a strong anti-Mayo sentiment on the boards...

I thought he was hired because he performed well in his role under Belichick, and had made an impression on ownership. So much so, that they zeroed in on him being the next head coach early on.

I've bought in on him being a team builder.... he just needs to follow thru with that promise... I think that approach can work... as long as its done with a side of discipline. Too player friendly, and you get a team full of Trent Browns... I would like to avoid that, if we can.

The Pats have a grueling schedule. With the state of the roster as it is, I do not expect to see great results. I think estimates of 6 or greater wins is overly optimistic... Vegas has them at 4, 4.5 depending on the site, and I think 2 wins is about right... might squeak out a third victory, but eh.... not so sure about that... with that said...

I am expecting that this team shows progress over the course of the season... I expect Mayo to grow as a coach this year... One of his biggest knocks, and it is a legit one, is his lack of experience... He's been coaching for literally 5 years... I get that he was a player for his whole life, but playing isn't coaching... He has a lot to learn this year... someone brought up Mike McDaniel in the puppet post... even though they might be the same age, McDaniel was 17 years into a coaching career when he got the nod... Jerod has a lot of learning to do...

I want to see if he leans on this triumvirate of power that has coalesced in New England over the past year... I would like to see him step up and make a firm decision or two on his own without leaning on the front office or ownership...

Game planning - How effective it is/will it be? How quickly will they adapt if what they planned isn't panning out? There have been times where a coach sticks to his plan, no matter what, when things aren't working... I might be wrong, but that's what it always felt like when watching the Mark Trestman led bears teams... Matt Patricia was also guilty of this in his game planning/play calling...

Mayo played for BB, who preached situational awareness... That doesn't only apply to specific in game scenarios... It also applies to being willing to vary what a team is doing week in week out... I have high hopes that Mayo can implement this strategy... why? the defense has been fluid over the last few years, working to their relative strengths vs a particular opponent... Mayo and Covington are used to that type of particular dynamic adaptation... I hope to see this trend continue...

Now on the offense, we have had the exact opposite... its been deliberate, plodding and very vanilla under both Matt Patricia and Bill O'Brien... I gotta say I'm not thrilled with all the "run first" comments that have come out of Foxboro... This leads to (for me at any rate) what is the most important question about Mayo as a HC - will he be innovative, or at the very least allow his offensive coaches to be innovative, or are we going to be stuck in a rut, doing the same damn thing over and over? I believe the defense will be dynamic, well as dynamic as it can be (without Barmore, Judon etc)... I really want to see Mayo let AVP rip the cover off the playbook... might not be appropriate to do it all the time, but every once in a while, go for it... wtf do we have to lose? we have a great punter, so, really, nothing...

I am also looking to see him forge a Team... not just a group of guys who wear the same color jerseys... There will be beatdowns this year... I want to see a bunch of guys who play hard, who fight for 60 minutes when things aren't going their way... 100% buy in isn't realistic... we will be able to see the guys playing for a paycheck (trent brown, im looking at you)... but if the majority of the fellas buy in, that's a sign that he's reaching the players...

Lastly, he needs to hire a media assistant... Like Sean McVay has with his Get Back coach, Mayo needs a MA... someone who will coach him up a bit when it comes to being media savvy... Its okay to say some things, but not everything... save himself a lot of grief if he learns sometimes it okay to not answer a question... "its a work in progress" or some sort of variation is a perfectly acceptable answer some of the time...

Go Pats!

I’m not a fan of the Mayo hire because he wasn’t really known for anything and their LB’s have been a problem for years. In addition, BB disciples have a horrible track record. Lastly, it was a ****ty move to want to fire Bill Belichick, but keep his staff.

With that said, LA media was not thrilled with the McVay hire and I remember talk radio laughing at it. Mike McDaniel was also controversial and they are both doing fine.

Mayo either turns out to be them or Jim Tomsola, Joe Philben, Adam Gase, Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia like disasters.

Kraft is a very smart man. He professes to measure 2x and then measure a bunch more prior to making any significant decisions. I have faith in his choice and that it had lots of real football people input and observations. As for Mayo succeeding. He just needs to be a solid coach. He is renowned for being more relationship based than BB, and that was needed, but otherwise he'll be all about the product on the field. It's how he was in his player and assistant coach. Nothing more to be said now

For starters Mayo needs to stress excellence or attention to detail on the Offensives side of the ball. The Offense cannot afford to shoot themselves in the foot they simply won't overcome it. That's why BB Excelled to the Coaching Greats his Teams were well prepared that alone gives you a fighters chance.

IMHO you gotta give the guy a year to get acclimated to HCing. He’s gonna make mistakes. BB was 5-11 in 2000, and he’d done it before. So I’ll give him and the FO a year and another offseason.

I'll give him time. I think this year is a wash, regardless who starts etc. Just want to see some positive developments, something to build from in 2025.

If we survived the combination of The Sullivan Family, Victor Kiam & **** MacPhearson... we shall persist.

You do realize that Kraft said he decided Mayo was going to be his future HC before he had coached at all, on a trip to Israel, right?
Rhetoric isn’t genius.

I'm spoiled as I only have started watching since the early Kraft days.

Bob Kraft can write his narrative anyway he'd like.

And you do realize it doesn't matter, right? You do realize that if he didn't continue to impress with his work ethic, he wouldn't have been considered, right?

Nah of course not. You're too myopic to think beyond what your only fans addled brain concocts in that paranoid little world you've created.

Assholes are going to *******. I'ma put you back on ignore now. I don't want to hurt your feelings again, have you haranguing Ian , trying to get me banned again Andy.

I want to see the team improve over the course of the season and hopefully not see a lot of stupid clock management issues. I don't want to see the defense slide back, because that won't speak well for him. But I'm definitely for giving him a year or two to see if he can be a good HC.

That said, I really want him to stop saying stupid stuff like "We're going to burn the cash," which then has to be walked back. Learning how to be the coach off the field would really help me have more belief in him as coach on the field.

Every one has to start somewhere. Bill Billichick wasn't who he was until he got an opportunity as a young man. Mayo's been given and opportunity it Will be up to him what he does with it. No matter if we got a more experienced HC the team was still needing to rebuild. Mayo inherited a bottom nfl roster with the 3rd overall pick. He's the HC let's hope he does well.

Pape what a well written and interesting post. Big kudos to you. Such a great topic.

In mayos media assistant isn't Slater somehow suppose to be in that role?

I personally have noticed a more firmer mayo, more assertiveness, saying " I'm the HC I make the decision. " that's what we need to see! He's the boss!

Touching on @PF2 comments.
He does need to focus on the offense and have them minimizing mistakes. As the great BB said you can't win until you stop beating yourself.

Everyone in the coaching realm in the NFL started somewhere. Some coaches played some didn't. Point is they got thier start some, and learned as thier coaching tenure wore on. Mayo's got his and I'm rooting for him to be successful.

I have no problem with giving someone a chance. I'm just saying I would've like to have seen Mayo climb the latter as most coaches do before becoming a HC. Bill Belichick got buzz due to his ability as a DC.

Oh I get it and typically that's what naturally you want to see. But he has something unique in that he's been under bills tutelage for 16 years as a player and coach. Mayo has the internal knowledge of Bill to help him thrive In his tenure.

I think, as with all things, his success is going to depend on the people around him to some degree. Some of those he will choose (coordinators, asst coaches, etc), some will be out of his control (GM, Scouts, etc). He's going to need Wolf and his staff to feed him a steady stream of good young players, or it's going to be an uphill battle to success.

But let's assume he gets that, and Wolf proves to be a consistently good drafter and can supplement with good veteran acquisitions (once they become a more sought after destination). Mayo himself will need to:

1) Build and maintain the respect of the locker room.

2) Learn from his mistakes (which he will make) and don't make the same ones twice. Same standard players have to live by.

3) Continue to surround himself with quality people who he can learn from, specifically in the aspects of the game he's less experienced in.

If he can progress in those three things each season, he'll be fine... with one big caveat: Maye needs to be the real deal. If Maye busts, I don't think Mayo (or most any coach) would survive long enough to see the next kick at the Franchise QB can. It's just the nature of the NFL in this day and age.

He's trying to do too much for the media. I get trying to bridge relationships (even though it's futile; when they smell blood, they smell ratings) but he is really kinda falling over his words, in particular explaining the whole "competition" thing.

But, if he improves this team and starts showing a promising future, idgaf what he says tbh.
