James Sanders is the Weak Link

James is the whipping boy not sure why. Merriweather is all over the field and that means you need someone to stay back and do cleanup.

Even if chung is put in his role he will not do anything as first and formost he has be the last line of defence in case a RB or WR gets behind.

I am confused as why they want 2 guiys to run around and no one to be the safety and hang back.

2008:
Not too lame.. This year he's 6th in tackles in less than full time snaps

Exactly the tackles are being made 30-40 yards downfield. No forced turnovers, no picks, nothing. We need an upgrade. It's so obvious to see.

Don`t you realize that he plays in the back and is responsible for keeping everything in front and not give big plays.
if he has the 6th most tackles means the front seven is letting too many big plays to get through. you are not a bit bothered that the safety is cleaning up the mess from the front seven,

you want him to abandon his role and try to make a play so we can give huge plays all day???? or you suggesting we make merriweather play this role and hang back?

The same reason Watson is a whipping boy: People on here are too stupid to realize that there are a whole lot of players who aren't superstars, and aren't bad players. They think its one or another: Elite, or JAG.

Sanders has 15 tackles at this point. I don't believe we've given up 15 plays of 30-40 yards while he has been on the field.

Sanders on his best day is average. I'm confident that the Pats are expecting Chung to overtake Sanders in playing time by week 11-12, and make up a 3 man rotation with McGowan and Merri. At that point Sanders might be getting 12 snaps a game which is plenty to help the others stay fresh.

How the hell do people not understand that AVERAGE starters are actually quite valuable. Half of the starters in the NFL are below average.

People here see a better option in McGowan and would rather see him play more snaps. Obviously we have a point: McGowan's started the past three games and this was the snap count this past game:

S Brandon McGowan 65 of 70
S James Sanders -- 39 of 70

Brandon McGowan being better than James Sanders does not mean James Sanders sucks. It means that Brandon McGowan is better than James Sanders.

(specifically, against the Baltimore ravens, and their throwing 45 times a game)

OK, who says he's average? Maybe he's well below average. An average starter would be a huge upgrade.

Maybe people are intrinsically saying that?

He is slow as molasses in wintertime. Does anyone know what movie reference that is?

I am, as are a lot of people in this thread. Belichick clearly thinks hes atleast average. He gave him a 10M deal.

Yes, don't know why he gave him that much money. He should be out on the street!

So you're right, I guess BB doesn think he's average at least. I think he's well below that.

Maybe he (bb) thougth he was in a jam and couldn't afford to lose a safety not realizing how easy they would be to pick up. So he signed him as insurance. Would be funny if he were to be cut next year.

He's played pretty much 75% of the patriots snaps the last 3 years. He's a decent safety. Just like Ben Watson is a decent TE, and Nick Kazcur is a decent RT. The fact that a player is not a probowler does not mean they are trash.
