I'm thinking Jones will get a hefty fine and no jail time, IMHO. The commish will probably suspend him for at least half a season. I can't imagine he is dumb enough to take loaded guns onto a plane. Being set up is certainly a possibility.

That's the problem. The guns AND AMMO were in the bag. He was in possession of the bag. Intent cannot be proven and if a defense scenario is broached at trial involving other people, chances are they would also risk legal jeopardy. Maybe the proceedings can be delayed buying time, maybe the penalties ultimately can be reduced somewhat. But it's really hard to imagine Jones surviving this to resume his Patriots career for very long. If it was just the guns and no ammo, maybe it wouldn't be as dire.

I give Jones the benefit of a doubt re. intending no harm. What he did caused no harm to others but ultimately could have if, for instance, the loaded gun accidentally discharged. While "innocent by reason of stupidity" actually might be true in this case, our legal system is not sophisticated enough to determine that.

Hand guns don't "accidentally" discharge, especially with modern handguns. You need to pull the trigger for them to go bang. That is called a negligent discharge, when they go bang when you didn't intend.

He might play for the Pats this season. They probably won't cut him unless and until jail time and his lawyer could delay the trial for quite a while.

If the MA law has no exceptions, his career ends with 2.5 minimum in jail, of course.

Until then, he's free to work, play, whatever. He didn't hurt anyone, except probably himself.

The mandatory sentencing for having a gun in Taxachusetts hasn't been enforced much since it's inception.

I still don't see what the big deal is here. If Alec Baldwin can get away with killing someone because he never checked his weapon but still pointed it at someone and pulled the trigger, then why do we expect Jones to go down for having them in his luggage?

They'll have a few minutes in a team meeting about it, and that'll be that.

This is starting to remind me of the AB story in that we didn't hear much about his transgressions that occurred while he was in Pissburgh until he landed here and gave the team a serious WR threat. Then, all of a sudden, AB was the main topic everywhere.

The media seems to have it out for the Pats with this story, especially when compared to other incidents with players from other teams.
