J.C. Jackson - "It's time to get Mr. INT paid."

I think he’s gone if he hits the open market. Somebody drops a big bag.

If he's referring to himself in third person whilst giving himself the moniker "Mr Interception" it doesn't bode well for re-signing him. Prepare for disappointment.

I'd go after these guys specifically assuming Jackson is gone.

FS/CB
Dane Cruikshank

Probably ^ more safety than corner but has good cover ability and athleticism for his size, especially against TE's. Played for Mike Vrabel and at 27 is an ascending player coming off a rookie contract. The Titans are also slightly up against the cap so he might be available. He might also be an answer to the DMC question if the Pat's brass think Devin has slipped or is more cheaply replaced.

CB's
Fabian Moreau
Kevin King
Eli Apple
Ahkello Witherspoon
Mike Ford

Moreau, Apple and Witherspoon would be good consolation prizes if Jackson is lost to us. The rest of them are more projections based off athleticism and snatching an ascending player before his original team moves him to a starting role.

Slot CB
Donte Jackson
Keion Crossen

Both of these ^ guys fit as potential heirs in the slot behind Jon Jones. Crossen would be my first choice as he has been more dependable and also provides on special teams in the meantime.

These are good players above who have the potential to be much better in New England on a better team with better scheme and coaching. BB makes DB's look great, think about Gilmore in Buffalo versus his time in New England. He was always the same player, his environment was better here.

Brushi signed a team friendly deal,l

so your saying Allen is going for 10 Tds
Bruschi was also his own agent, and may have left some money on the table, that said, Bruschi's market value has always been wildly overrated by Patriots fans.

Eli Apple? Seriously?

One bad game doesn’t make a career, if it did Stephon Gilmore was a bad player because Stefon Diggs beat him up one time.

If Jackson gets a billion dollars then it’s time to look at more affordable options.

Btw when Gilmore was traded to New England many fans called it a massive overpay citing how bad the Bill’s D was at that point… turned out okay because a great organization can pull better results from players.

A $20M bonus out of $75M + another $25M in guarantees following same pattern from last season:

$75M for 4 yrs ($18.75 apy)
$20M signing bonus
$45M guaranteed (60%)
2022: $1M + $5M bonus: $6M cap
2023: $17M + $5M bonus: $22M cap
2024: $18M + $5M bonus: $23M cap
2025: $19M + $5M bonus: $24M cap

That's doable.
I like JC too but we have had better CB's who's worth that kind of money. I say let some other Team pay him that don't like those High cap numbers.

Ranked 3rd best FA. Yeah there's no market for him ....

The more I think about it I think the Pats are going to let JC walk. JC is going to be a happy man thanks for the hard work JC.

This is why I think Belichick will try to tag and trade him. His stock seems to be rising right before free agency. I think there could be several teams willing to trade for him. Bill will know most likely before the March 8th deadline if there is a strong trade market for Jackson. I still think there might be.

I think deals like that will be agreed upon in advance. I think the last time they tagged and traded a player was Matt Cassel, but I may be mistaken. Either way Cassel ended up in KC with former Patriots on the coaching staff and in the front office. I don't doubt the details were worked out in advance.

Their last tag was Thuney which was a surprise to most everyone. Does anyone think its possible BB tagged him in order to trade him, but then could not find a willing partner?
If that was the case, it could certainly weigh into BBs decision making with JCJ if he would only apply the tag to get something in return.

I think we'll see quite an overhaul in our secondary. Fact of the matter is that they faltered when it mattered most, more than once.

I still think JC will be tagged, but not so confident anymore. I hope we nail a good CB in the draft or in FA. No second rounders tho, please

Raiders could be a destination. I see a playoff contending team offering a late first or a future 1st ala Seymour to Raiders trade in 2009.

Not sure they intended to trade Thuney as much as sign him, pure guess though. The Chiefs made a stupid offer.

It's hard to tag and trade, teams are often unwilling to pay twice. You give up a draft pick, then pay a guy a massive contract. lose/lose

A CB desperate team could though, probably in the NFC if BB can swing it. And don't be shocked if the trade compensation isn't as high as expected.

Yeah, Cassel immediately signed his franchise tag and the Pats and Cassel's agent immediately went to find a trade partner and new deal for Cassel. The Pats franchised him on February 5th, he signed the tender on February 8th, and was traded on February 28th.

Thuney actually signed his franchise tender right away too. I assume he was hoping that the Pats would trade him after that. We will never know if they intended to keep him or they couldn't find a trade partner to give them enough to let him go.

If we get a second rounder for JC, please take it. That should help us to draft a CB in first round and draft playmakers in DI,WR and possibly even edge .

I am not too gung ho about linebackers. We have invested significant draft capital on LBs. We might as well use the savings from JC J salary/tag on a above average free agent line backer.

Mcgrone, uche and Perkins should come out good along with Jennings . Improved play from nose tackle should help elevate the entire team.

I think they had a deal in place for Cassel in advance. In the 2009 preseason Brady had to go back under the knife to clean up the same knee he already underwent a procedure on, this was right before the season was set to begin and they didn't know if he'd be ready. Tagging Cassel was smart because if they needed him they had him for one season, if they didn't they could trade him and the Chief's brass already had working knowledge of the player.

I'm hopeful for the linebackers you mentioned, but I think it's far from a given that they'll work out. I thought Uche would make a second year leap this year, but for whatever reason he was pretty lackluster. We haven't seen anything from McGrone or Perkins yet, though both were expected to be red shirts I think. I agree that spending more 2nd/3rd round picks on the same kind of LB's doesn't make a lot of sense until you see what you've got with the ones you already took, but it's still a bit of a gamble since they're huge unknowns to this point. I think if two of McGrone, Perkins, Uche, and Jennings turn out to be players, we're ahead of the game statistically.

But a bad career does equal a bad career.
He had a great bounce back season last year, closer to resembling the player he was projected to be as a rookie.

We're looking at low cost options assuming Jackson is gone. I'd prefer Ahkello Witherspoon and Fabian Moreau ahead of Apple but he has talent BB could tap into as a reclamation project.

The way to improve assuming they lose Jackson or otherwise is to become bigger, faster, stronger along the defensive front, if that happens they can get by with less in the defensive backfield or deal with a youth movement back there.
