I thought I read just yesterday that he wouldn't play on the franchise tag.

If the logic holds under which we got where we are now in recent cap moves, the old market top will be "overtopped" pretty soon. If you want to play in that market early's better than late,

The Pats could as easily conclude yeahhh but, everything we had last year wasnt close to enough, even WITH "Mr. Int." The Pats don't have a history of paying corners who are eminently pay-worthy.

I'm not saying I'm in some "not worth it" camp, but devil's advocate? If we pay, whatever we do the rest of the season, get ready to watch Stefon Diggs torch us twice a season barring ice tornados or whatever tf that was in the first Buffalo game (he still got his 2 torch games in because of playoff pairings. Lucky us.)

It's fine as a fan if you want JC Jackson to walk. However there is no CB (aside from a healthy Alexander) that meets the board's standard for CB1 play.

CBs on the good side of 30 that can play Man and Zone proficiently are scarce. JC Jackson is absolutely one of the top UFAs this offseason.

Let him go and bring back old in the tooth 32 Malcom Butler so he can get his gold watch. The 2021 Pats pass defense was top 5. The run defense was the problem. The Pats can take their pick on which hole to fix while the boat is sinking. Josh Allen can throw for 10 TDs next Pats game.

I could see teams paying him $18m especially with this cap, but no one is paying him that much and giving up a premium draft pick. It defeats the purpose of having a draft pick at all.

Josh Allen scored on every drive against the Patriots in the last two games he played against the Pats. In the last game, he had a TD on every drive. The only reason he didn't have a TD on every drive in the game before were because Allen's receivers dropped passes in the end zone. How much better could Allen do against the Patriots without Jackson?

The fact is when the Pats were able to produce good pressure on QBs with a four man rush, this defense absolutely stymied the opposing passing offenses. When they didn't, teams picked apart the defense.

Personally, I want to beef up the front seven. The Pats can get a consistent pass rush without blitzing, they have shown that they can survive with an average or even mediocre secondary. That will also help against the running game.

Matt Cassel got the Pats an early second round pick in a tag and trade situation. That should be the absolute lowest the Pats should get.

Frank Clark was tagged and traded in 2019 for a 1st and a second in 2020
Jared Allen was tagged and traded in 2008 for a 1st rounder and two thirds

Let's not act like what I said is unprecedented. If a team truly thinks Jackson is an elite CB, a first rounder is a value for compensation. I stand by my statement. I think the Pats will get a first round pick because I think there are enough teams that think Jackson is an elite player along with his age and position.

He also has a record of letting guys go when other teams value them much more than he does. Asante Samuel, Logan Ryan, Malcolm Butler.

So, in general, I trust him to make the right assessment about JC's true value.

And I wonder if other teams may be leery of signing a Patriot CB given the history of Belichick letting them go. Especially with an undrafted guy like JC.

That being said, it would not surprise me if JC was given a 3 year $50m deal from the Patriots.

I want to keep Jackson, I hope they find a way to. You need a lot of good corners in today's NFL.

That said, this defense had trouble stopping the Bills WITH Jackson on a very team friendly deal. Now increase his cap hit ten fold, and try to find good ways to ADD depth to that position... it's not impossible, but it's really hard.

The question for me is: Is Jackson so good that he alone makes it worth tying up that money and trying to build the rest of the secondary through the draft or long shot FA's? Or are you better off getting a second tier CB to replace him and using the extra space to try to build depth? Not a cut and dry choice, but keeping Jackson at any cost would be ill advised, IMO.

You nail it. For all Bill's issues with WRs, it seems to me he's consistently had a #1 corner here, and he's managed that position well, as you point out. Cut bait when it's time, pay when needed to the right guy. None of us know that JC is the right guy or not. Seems like he might be from my seat, but, in this case, I not going to second guess the man who has proven over the years that he knows how to manage the secondary.

Tough situation here. JC Jackson is not a shut down corner like Revis, Law etc.

However he is a playmaker with great athlecism. Also has a knack of being at the right place at the right time to .. the amount of interceptions that are thrown away from him but somehow get tipped and fall directly into his arms is crazy.

On one hand I'm like ..yeah we need a playmaker back there ..there's no one better available...MR INT yeah!

On the other I'm Like...... Hes not a shut down corner, can be beat and is regularly tested by opposing qbs. Defense could use some of that money spread around. He can't take away Diggs who is WR#1 in our division.
