It Looks Like No Long term Deal between Pats and Welker

I hear Michael Holley is stuck fielding lots of calls about the great and powerful Edleman on WEEI at the moment...LOL

Maybe they can tag him next season since he's an UDFA. More likely they'll try and extend him for a couple of years for peanuts though and hope he's really more than a STer and backup slot receiver/db. And they might want to teach him to place kick in a pinch. I'm sure he could pick it up, after all many here assume he's the secret emergeny/wildcat QB here too. Belichick's swiss army knife.

Edelman will, no doubt, be getting the Franchise tag from the Patriots next year. He's just too important to the team not to.

This post is one of the more epic failures I've seen on this board of late, so I have very little response. I will say that Tom Brady disagrees with you, tremendously, if that counts for anything.

If you want to talk about offensive execution in the six playoff games Welker has been in as a Patriot, you have to take into consideration level of opposition and the amount of attention Welker is drawing from these opponents. All I know is I remember Welker being awfully important on the SB42 drive to take the lead, which for all intents and purposes should've ended the game right then and there. If David Tyree doesn't snare a ball of his helmet, Welker's a Boston legend. So why should we let David Tyree impact our opinion of Wes Welker?

I find it funny that all of you guys resort to my posts as idiotic and failures, when I've made no attacks on you guys. But regardless fine Welker gets some attention, but you realize that where he draws attention to is the exact same area of the field our other two weapons (Gronk and Hernandez) are operating? Go watch the Jets game no one threatening outside and 3 guys running around the middle, teams just drop back Zones and destroy us. I think Welker has a place on the team but not for Fitzgerald money. 3 Years 24 Million seemed fair to me. My opinion of Welker has nothing to do with Tyree or the horse shoe up Eli mannings @$$, I just think the direction our offense is going Welker is not as valuable.

Welker is a possession receiver, not a home run hitter. He doesn't live by the yard, he lives by the catch. He's only gotten to 100 yards 23 times since joining the Patriots, so getting to it once in 7 times in the playoffs isn't some shocking disappointment.

And feel free to show where Schefter said Welker wanted Johnson/Fitzgerald money. I think you'll find that he didn't say that. Here's what he actually said:

It implies that he wants to get paid like a top receiver. It does not imply that he wants to be paid like Fitzgerald and Johnson. As a matter of fact, the reports are that he was fine with a 2 year deal, but the teams were some 6 million apart and the Patriots were offering him less than 16 million.

That's obviously not Fitzgerald/Johnson money.

So, reports counter your argument, and the very quote you're pointing to doesn't say what you claimed it said. And you wonder why people are criticizing your posts?

You're letting a throwaway line by Adam Schefter make you say some silly things.

There's absolutely no evidence Welker is asking for 8 years 120-130 million, or anywhere in that realm.

All we know is the team is still offering 2 years 16 mill, and he wants over 20 in that 2 years since that's what he'll get in the franchise.

Anything else is conjecture.

I don't think Welker sucks, I just don't think this team will fall off the wagon without him.

And I'm not saying he wants the years.. He may want the avg as in 2 years 30 million 20 million guaranteed. If its a throwaway line fine, I'll admit that everything I said is stupid 100% if Welker just wants 3 years 24 million and the FO is stiff arming the guy. I made a post in the thread where Wes signed his tender and said I hope the economics of this situation don't screw this team over.

I really don't think there is anything to read into health-wise for Welker. The team obviously wants him here and respects his production or they wouldn't have franchised him. I know some might have a hard time grasping this but it generally does take BOTH sides to compromise when negotiating a contract extension. Most likely they were just still too far apart in cash/years. They have been running the team this way for over a decade so it really shouldn't be a surprise that a deal isn't done. Wes probably shouldn't have signed the tender because he lost his leverage when he did that. But the good news is Wes is a Patriot for this upcoming season.. and the team can do the same thing next year in hopes of getting a long term deal done.

Fair enough I was mostly talking about the guy saying I'm one of the stupidest fans in the NFL..I also admit my post is stupid if I'm misreading Schefter's quote. We have Welker for another year and a deep threat so hopefully all this is a moot point next February and they can resign Welker coming off a Super Bowl high

Except he has cracked 100 yards in 1 playoff game with the Pats lol, Welker isn't the reason they win or lose anything in the playoffs (except the Super Bowl DOH!) and that's exactly why he shouldn't get an extension if he wants Fitzgerald/Calvin money which Schefter reported. Calvin Johnson in 1 career playoff game has half of Welker's TOTAL yards and the same number of TOTAL TOUCHDOWNS.

He's a slot receiver and that's it he can get the top deal for a slot receiver since he's the best in the game (IE a little more than Devon Bess). I didn't say Edelman was equal to Welker. I said given all of Welker's snaps in practice and during games he'd amass about 70% of Welker's production. No one on this team should be making over 10 million on offense besides Brady he's what makes the team go. I'm sorry that I don't care about leading the league in receptions and yards when it doesn't count.

The time where you want a Welker type is over for this offense, he had a 10 million dollar role when we had no tight ends operating the middle and the best deep threat of all time on the perimeter. Since the emergence of the two tight end offense we don't need him. This offense would be so much more dangerous if you replaced Welker with Vincent Jackson who could have been had for the same price as what Welker wants.

You can do anything once. Heck, you can go to the pro bowl once, just ask a one and done QB like Derek Anderson. What really matters is what you can continue to do consistently once defenses have had a chance to make book on you. Can you adjust and adapt to outwit them or are you just an unexpected anomoly. What on earth leads you to believe Vincent Jackson could master this complex offense any better than Chad Jackson did...or would have been given a chance to with his 50-60% inconsistent catch rates...

Welker has 53 receptions in 7 playoff games with 3 TDs - 7.5 catches/game with an average of 8.26 yards per catch.

If that were a 16-game schedule, he'd have 121 receptions for 1,000 yards and 7 TDs - in the playoffs!

I wouldn't be surprised if he stands alone with the all-time Super Bowl receptions record after this year, unless Deion Branch has a monster game.

Schefter's quote was probably just some throwaway in one of his ESPN appearances. There was little substance to it, and we need to weigh it with what other evidence we have.
