Is it time to trade "bend, don't break" for "break some necks"?

I know the subject is a little facetious, but honestly, our contain schemes either suck our our personnel can't carry them out. Watching the pass rush get a lot more explosive as the Jets game wore on, I wonder if it's time to make that the rule, rather than the exception?

I know it's a BB philosophy to keep the ball in front of us, but let's face it, trying to do that got us in 24-6 hole. Attacking helped get us back in the game.

Maybe it's a no, but I think we're at the point where it might be worth risking it for a FIRST quarter.

If Redd comes up and can pass rush we could alternate him and Woods on kill routes and keep driving the boys down the centre. O'Neil and Hobbs (and Meri when he's in coverage) have all shown they can make the critical pick on balls popped up out of sync. I say we increase their odds of those plays, even if it risks TD's. Especially knowing we'll either be facing the relative short-ball of Penny or a green QB (Penny is probable this week with a foot injury, hard to guess if it's a real issue or not).

What do you guys think?

Disclaimer:
Just looking for friendly discussion on the issue. If you're a practice squad guru who just wants to call someone stupid, it'd be super if you'd just start a new thread called "JSn sucks" or something along those lines.

I don't think we have a choice. We can't cover anyone.

Yes. In the 3rd they attacked them and stopped them cold. They backed off and gave the game up. I think the D is sitting back waiting for mistakes, they need to create them though. I think they need to utilize the young LBs more and call more blitz. The sitting back obviously isn't working, this defense needs to attack.

Yes.

When your OLBs - your primary QB-sackers - are Vrabel & Woods, then you need to think outside the box in order to bring pressure, because those two aren't going to bring it themselves. Just remember not to rush 6 if Wilhite & Richardson are on the field at the same time. Those stiffs need all the coverage help they can get.

I would love to see some more zone blitzing ala the Eagles. This bend but dont break defense worked early in the decade, but we have been burnt in recent years.

This is one of my biggest issues with this D. When they brought pressure, The Jets offense ground to a halt. Stopped cold. When they stopped pressuring the QB and playing safe, Farrvvve picked them apart.
The 3 man D line gets no pressure on the QB. This has been a theme throughout the year. A decent game here and there and then very little. The OLB's have not had any consistency either. These two factors have left our secondary exposed.
Bringing pressure saw immediate results.
Now look who we play next week. In our last game against Miami and Chad in September, we did not even touch the guy and he had all day and picked us apart.
If we don't start throwing multiple looks and bringing it, it will be more of the same.

I think we simply don't have the horses to break necks. Remember we had Warren out, AD out, Harrison on IR, we had rotational or backup players starting, and we had some youngsters blowning coverages in a pressure situation they've had little experience with...

Truth is bend but don't break worked in the SB until Asante missed a game sealing pick and Tyree made a freak circus catch against outstanding coverage by "old man" Harrison after the refs refused to call Eli in the grasp. But those miscues led to us abandoning bbdb in favor of a send the house blitz that didn't quite get there and man on Plax with no safety help (which had neutralized him all night)...

You might want to be a little more fair to the young guys.
I can agree with your assessment of Vrabels and Woods, though.

A pet peeve of mine that goes along with this thread....
..when the Pats only send three and there are five OL blocking them, that means there are 8 guys covering 5, you'd think you could stop the pass more often. If you can't, then send some blitzers. What the hell.

Besides ***ante, Rodney could've had an INT earlier (at the 2-min warning) and Meriweather could've had an over-the-shoulder INT after the Tyree Miracle. Meriweather's coverage throughout that drive was consistently awful. And WTF were they thinking letting the jints have an easy pitch-and-catch for a 1st down on the very first play from scrimmage? And BBDB really didn't work that well in the 1st half, either.

I have to agree with this post. Although it is a big gamble to leave our young secondary on their own, I think it is a bigger gamble to let QBs to just sit there and pick us apart. Last year, it was enough to let Vrabel and defensive line to go after QB but clearly it hasn't been enough this year(of course, it helped that we were up by 2 touchdowns or more by 2nd quarter last year). I say send in Merriweather up blitzing more. Kid is naturally aggressive but seems bit too light to tackle TEs. Watching him bounce off Keller made me cringe whole night.

Its tough to play a blitzing aggressive style without the proper DBs. We basically said no to thr aggressive approach even some of the time when we let Asante go, IMO thats hurt us more than the Brady injury.
