Is Hobbs a starting-quality Cornerback?

And that would be another reason to move Wilson to corner, his normal position.

A position he's played on the rare occasion over the last 4 years. I can only think of one time, the Pittsburgh game in 2004 where Wilson played there with any regularity. But that's it.

Excuse me, but lHobbs is often caught playing way too far off his man to perform a bump and run...where Hobbs plays, he is beyond the five yard area and would be subject to being called for illegal Polian contact.
Huh???

It depends on the play calling. Samuel played off Harrison the entire game!

In either case, I fully expect Wilson, or a new draftee, or a cb in free agency to start at the other corner next season.

And, by strengthening the other corner, with the safety position deeper, and moving Hobbs to nickel, the entire secondary benefits.

Why would moving Wilson back to corner after 4 years at safety be a good thing? They tried that this season and he was nothing more than a third safety on the field.

Hobbs will not be starting come week 1. He gets juked out way too often. He plays way too far off of his man probably for that reason. Get's called for too many pass interferences, especially in the endzone. The Pats will draft a corner to compete in training camp, I believe late first round if the value is there.

I voted that Hobbs will be a starter whether or not Asante is here. I agree he takes his lumps like everyone else, but he brings a lot of energy and charisma to a position where you need it, going opposite the most charismatic and energized players on the field - the WR.

Yep, I agree.

I think Hobbs can be a starter, just not on a top 5 team (which the Patriots are, and should be in 07), and definetly not on a top 5 D.

The search function on these boards is going to get hit up hard come September.

It wouldn't matter, you can quote NEM until you're blue in the face and he will just deny everything. He takes great pride in his dishonesty.

I say yes, he had a solid performance against the colts, and you can't face a much tougher passing attack than that.

I agree. I'm also impressed with the upward trajectory. It's not the least consolation for a painful loss that both cornerbacks produced excellent performances.

I do think Hobbs improved as the season went on. Randall Gay will be healthy next year so wouldnt doubt to see him playing.

Yep. This is what I wrote on another board right after he was drafted:

Hobbs will perform better with the Pats than some of the round one CBs.
He's smart, aggressive, and a team player. IMO, he's going to be a very special player -- give him some time.
IMO, he'll be better than Samuel and Starks in the long run. Both he and Gay have terrific ball skills, which could lead to a few ints.

I guess time will tell...

Ayup.

He's solid.

Yes, he is. The more he plays, the better he can become.

It took Samual a few years to be the player he has become.

Man, the longer this thread stays active. the more crows I am going to have to serve up, and let me tell ya, crows aint cheap....

September can't get here soon enough.

Please place your orders for how you would prefer to have your portion of crow served...

Plain
Raw
Fried
Baked
Broiled
Barbecued
As A patty
In a hot dog roll
Or alive and kicking?

Please remember, when you eat crow, bring along lots of Tums or Rolaids.

BTW, beverages are not included with your serving of crow.

I agree NEM! Pats can either find a better replacement for Hobbs in FA or Draft. Hobbs is a better fit in the nickel and dime role. He will not start come September.

Plain and Simple. Is Hobbs a starting quality corner-back?

YES!

Bon Appetite

Better save crow for yourself, NEM. Just in case. If you don't want to eat crow, I'll Fed Ex you some delectable Oklahoma squirrel ribs.

Dude is that deal going down or not. I wasnt able to stay up until 1 am to read it all.

As of now, no. I actually pondered taking NEM on his terms, but after thinking about it I decided it's foolhardy to enter into a bet with someone who stacks the criteria for the bet in his favor by tying the entire thing to whether or not Samuel stays. In my opinion there are risks both ways, but NEM doesn't see it that way.

Wrong again. I have stated that Samuel wont be a starter and my opinion has always been based on the parameters that are now in effect, and that is with Samuel as the starting corner on the other side from where Hobbs has been playing.

Therefore, my proposal makes sense. He is the, allegedly starting corner now with Samuel..and therefore the bet must be under the same parameters...with Samuel as the starter next season, I say Hobbs will not be the other starter, at corner.

Very simple, Nothing is being stacked in my favor, because Samuel is there now, was there when I made my projection, and must be there in September for the parameter to be the same.

Makes sense to anyone.
But if the Patriots go out and draft a high profile CB or sign nate Clemets would still make that bet?

That is speculation. It has no bearing on the bet which , if accepted, takes place with the parameter that is in effect NOW.

That is part of the reason I dont believe that Hobbs will be a starter at corner next season.

1: I expect Samuel to re sign.

2: I expect the Pats to pick up a corner in free agency, or in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft.

And that is why Sooner wont make the bet, because he knows if that happens, Hobbs wont be a starter at corner, and instead, will be relegated to the nickel back position, which, IMO, is his better position anyway.

Too many people have drawn their conclusion that Hobbs is a good corner because they have seen how hard he plays, and hits, while at the nickel position, and many here dont realize that he looked that good at that position and that he wasnt playing corner at those times.

NEM, I don't think you get it. If Samuel re-signs, the probabilty of the Pats going out and spending big money on a quality FA CB good enough to beat out Hobbs for the other spot is next to zero.

I don't see Wilson moving to corner at this point either. He hasn't played there in at least 2 seasons and was basically out football for a year. How exactly do you come to the conclusion he's just going to waltz into camp after missing a year and unseat Hobbs, a player BB clearly has confidence in. If he didn't have that confidence, he's on the bench. I draw my conclusions from what I see and I read between the lines. End of story

That leaves the rookie option. I suppose it's possible for a rookie to come in and wow BB, but given the relatively short time in camp to do so that's also hard to imagine.
