Obviously, it a MAJOR error on the part of the front office to have only ONE qualified blocker on the team: Gronkowski. That situation simply doesn't work in this year;s NFL.
Solder has played reps at TE (29 I think in the 2 days). That is not the issue. Perhaps we should play 3 WR, plus our best TE (Solder). Belichick is not ready for this.
I am amazed to think that we now consider Cannon so great a LT that we would Solder and play him at TE. Seriously, we reduce our running game efficiency by losing Solder at LT, and replace him with Cannon.
Cannon has moved from a backup, to our best starting OG (delusions of some) and now good enough to replace a healthy Solder at LT.
I'm just not buying.
You celebrate our consistent vanilla defense, with almost no substitutions, and you want to to take one of best LT's in the NFL and make him a TE? I'm confused.
Perhaps, we might find an acceptable blocking TE somewhere. I am absolutely appalled that we ahve ZERO acceptable blocking TE's.
Just BTW, when gronkowski comes back, he will need to be a blocker. He will have little bandwidth to be a top receiver.
Develin looks pretty bad but Hooman is absolutely dreadful, just a god awful blocker.
•I think you confused I would rather, with I would like to MG. I do not want to use Develin or Solder at fullback or tight-end, however if left with no choice but to choose one of them I would favor Solder at tight-end over Develin in any role.
•As far as Cannon being at left-tackle and Solder being at tight-end if lined up in that formation 9 times out of 10 you’d be running the football so yes I would think having Solder, Vollmer and Cannon all on the field would be far more effective than Develin, how we’d reduce the running game by moving Solder to tight-end and inserting Cannon is beyond my scope of understanding, especially being that we generally run over the right side to Vollmer and the tight-end (Solder in this case) which would actually put Solder into the play more rather than just protecting the backend at left-tackle. In addition I would not be so quick to conclude Solder is a better run blocker than Cannon, Solder is an excellent tackle in both the pass and run which is what makes him elite, however Cannon is actually a bigger more powerful guy which could make him more impactful on a running play.
Previously before he took over the tackle position full time, Solder was used as a blocking TE on some plays. So he is already familiar with what to do. So right now he is the best option until Gronk and Sudfield get back and Mulligan gets up to speed.
Really, you got to kind of have to admire Bill on how he handles injuries and still field a competitive team. What other team would even think of using their left tackle as a TE.
What I don't understand is if you wanted a player capable of playing fullback, inline tight end and flex tight end why the heck did we cut Daniel Fells who could do all of those things, he has good size at 6'4 252 pounds, he is a very good blocker, a crisp route runner with a solid set of hands and he has experience lining up at fullback which he did a lot of during his time with the Rams. In fact many analysis said he was a better fit for fullback when he first signed here last season.
I admit I wasn't high on Fells in the preseason mainly because I thought we had more in Sudfeld and Ballard, added to my doubting we'd retain a fullback, now that I see Develin, Mulligan and Hooman on the 53 man roster I'm about to start a ******* petition and picketing outside of Gillette with a sign that says "sign Daniel Fells".
that's because they had a pro bowler in Matt Light at LT so they used Solder he's Rookie season at TE to max protect, if they try that now they will get Brady killed
????
Nate Solder played TE on Thursday night on about 30% of the total offensive snaps, with Cannon playing left tackle.

Mulligan wouldn't get up to speed even if he used the Starship Enterprise.
To replace Develin, Bill should sign Michael Robinson, Jacob Hester, Spencer Larsen or
Chris Gronk;
To replace Mulligan, he should (re-)sign Fells, David Thomas, Dorin ****erson, Richard Quinn
or Dan Gronk.
