I suspect that 12 positions are truly up for grabs.

We're going to need 3 tackles. One advantage that we have is that Owenu might be our best RT on the team currently playing guard and can fill in at a moments notice. I thought he looked really good at RT against Carolina.

If we can find a trade partner for Wynn, I'd be all for trading him but at this point, I think when healthy, he's probably a little better than Cajuste. At this stage, there is no doubt that Cajuste has moved past Herron, but if Wynn is healthy, I think he is the starter.

I think the problem I keep running into is that the depth just isn't there (for the moment) at either tackle or interior. So we could trade Wynn, move Onwenu to RT and have Cajuste as the swing guy. That's not bad, but then you need two of Hines, Hambright, Desjarlais, etc to step up, one as a starting RG and one as a reliable backup. Otherwise Ferentz is your first guy up in the middle if there's an injury. And I don't HATE Ferentz as a backup center, but at guard he's just not the guy.

I doubt the Pats will move Onwenu to make their starting RT a swing guy. I think having the starters start is more important than having depth.

Hambright and Desjarlais haven't shown enough? PS for one or both?
IMO you need a vet who has at least proven some level of acceptable performance at an NFL level on the roster.

Those two have been decent but starters Week 1? That's a lot to ask.

From Bedard after he watched the Caroline game, FWIW:
RT Mike Onwenu: Perfect game back at tackle. When are the Patriots going to done trying him at guard?

Anybody have a list of teams with 3 or more starting guards that could be trade partners? I'd think the Pats would want to get this done now, rather than wait for cut down day, so the new guy can have time to get integrated.

I still think our ideal lineup is Brown-Strange-Andrews-Onwenu-Wynn, with Cajuste and whoever wins the job for first backup G being the two other gameday actives, with Ferentz or Russey on the PS as gameday elevations for backup C. But obviously that depends on Wynn. He's the domino.

I'm not aware of a list of starters. I'm just suggesting a capable vet who can come in and spell a kid who needs some time to correct an issue

Did Onwenu run over Bill's dog or something? They seem to not want to make him a starter since a promising rookie year.

Didn't see this thread... I think Cajuste is having a very good camp and getting better with repetitions he looks tough. You can see him mirroring DE's in pass protection he looks like he's ready to Start. Not taking a shot at the short often injured guy but I prefer Mount Brown and Y Cajuste manning the outsides. Wynn will be a very expensive back-up this year hope he's earns his money but I think Cajuste right now is a better player Wynn hasn't shown me anything a average O-Tackle hasn't.

Ash: an 11Mill guy a little better than an 1Mill guy it's like watching a horror movie in every way.

I agree that we won't be paying Wynn $10M as a backup.

Can’t trade Wynn.

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that someone like Hambright beats out Ferentz in that case, but I agree that that doesn't make the situation any better. I keep Wynn if I'm the Pats. You're not getting a comparable replacement tackle for less than $10m.

Counting on 2 of Hines, Hambright and Desjarlais to be serious contributors is long shot. Do you disagree?

If that's how it settles, Wynn/Cajuste/Owenu at RT (starter and backups) then its 3 guys for about $12M. Once the dust settles, the coaches don't care about how that's distributed. Time to get on with things.

Maybe Wynn picked up another minor injury and the team is not confident he will last the entire season. Hence the hurry to trade him .

Maybe they believe the sum of parts at RT are better than what Wynn can provide. In the process if we save 10 million, use it next year to sign a FA.

Wynn is the starter if he’s healthy.
