If you have no intention of keeping him, why not let him loose into FA earlier. Doesn't hurt to let players that you know will be cut to leave them feeling a bit better about it.

Only reason to wait till last minute is if they were asking him to restructure downward and they're still in negotiations.

But, if he doesn't take a pay cut, he will be cut regardless of how difficult it will be to replace his production. I read other posts saying the other way around, but this is more consistent with the reports a couple weeks back.

This is all a grey area to me. I know today is the deadline for the Patriots to pick up Lloyd's option. However, I also read that they "asked Lloyd to restructure." That technically means that the Pats can do nothing today, which would effectively release him, and then re-sign him for less money? If that were the case, we may not hear any news today, right?
