Is BB too good for the Pats?

I posted something like this once before a couple years ago. BB is the greatest football coach in the history of the game. Concepts such as situational football, bend but don't break, making the system fit the players, using players in multiple positions, team before individual, one game at a time, and so on are all ideas he largely made the norm in the NFL. While some of these ideas have been around a long time, it's BB who put them all together and made them work to the point that to some degree every good team in the League mimics him.

The problem, then, I think, is that now that everyone is copying BB, he has less to offer. Come playoff time, just about every single coach uses many of BB's methods and prepares just as hard as he does, so BB does not have an edge. Furthermore, since BB is considered the greatest coach, it seems that every coach, pundit, and other expert has focused extra attention on how to defeat the Pats. In many ways, the Pats not only played the Jets, but played a host of experts who each had their own ideas of how to defeat the Pats. No other team faces anything like that to the degree the Pats do. I doubt we'll see many articles and discussions on how the Steelers can beat the Jets or vice versa.

So, what does this mean going forward? Well, BB is still the greatest coach, and the way he manages draft picks continues to give the Pats an edge, and the fact is that even our "losing" seasons are enviable and record breaking. But, I think BB is so highly respected and scrutinized that come playoff time, he puts the Pats at a disadvantage. I'm not sure what the answer is, since obviously BB is irreplaceable. Perhaps BB already has the answer: Save up enough draft picks to make our team superior not only at the top levels, but at every other level as well.

The season's is long enuf for truth to out. But the game is short--60 minutes--and anything can happen and often does. If Cleveland took us out, certainly the much more talented Jets could take us--and did.

Had you or BlueString actually read what I wrote, you probably would have seen this: "I'm not sure what the answer is, since obviously BB is irreplaceable." Perhaps three paragraphs is a little too long a read for some people.

We just need to get better, folks. The Patriots dominated often in the regular season by not making mistakes and by forcing mistakes.

When for whatever reason you lose the edge in playing football that is more mistake-free, then you are in for a real battle.

It's no secret. Get more talent, coach it up, make few mistakes, force mistakes, and also have a talent edge so that you can defeat a mistake-free opponent. Right now that talent edge is too tiny or absent, at least in many key positions.

yeah i read but you say "is bb too good for the pats?" and also he is not replaceable so what does that even mean. that he needs to dumb down a little ?
Its one loss, big loss, tough loss. It doesnt extend to other games IMO.

So you are saying BB invented the "concept" of bend but don't break I don't think that is an actual style of defense...it just happens naturally

I'm just getting a little annoyed with the fact BB wants to do everything himself, he needs to give up some responsibility.

I think his approach to defense at times is that if you force the other team to make enough plays, chances are they'll make a mistake. To me, that's the beauty of bend but don't break. Of course, I'm sure he'd prefer 3 and out, but the second choice is to not give up the big play so that the other team has more opportunities for error.
