2010 San Diego Chargers: The Greatest Bad Team Ever

San Diego, the Greatest Bad Team Ever - WSJ.com

Very interesting article on how rare it is to have a team look so great outside the numbers and be ugly inside

One has to wonder why the Chargers have not fired thier STs coach yet

Re: 2010 San Diego Chargers: The Greatest Bad Team Ever

The stats are extremely misleading.

The Chargers offense is on the field all the time, so obviously they are going to get tons of yards. Likewise the defense is not on the field. That's how you reconcile the special teams debacles with the "elite production" on both sides. In addition, the Chargers offense is always passing the ball; you are going to get a higher yards per play, but you also get lots of clock-stopping incompletions and turnovers.

The best team they've played is Kansas City. An average team with this schedule would be 4-2.

I'd be surprised if the Chargers win more than seven games this season. Now they actually have to play some good teams.

I would agree with you, except if you look at their yards per stats, they're still very good. They're top 5 (or close) in yards per pass for, yards per pass allowed, yards per rush allowed, and something like 12th in yards per rush for.

Sure, the aggregate stats are skewed by ToP, but they're doing well per individual play on top of that.

Re: 2010 San Diego Chargers: The Greatest Bad Team Ever

I posted the exact stats somewhere else, but there are at least 15 drives where either the SD D should have been on the field, or had a longer field to defend, that were lost to turnovers, fumbles, blocks, and returns.

If those drives occur normally (ie SDs kick/punt team doesn't give up a return or a blocked kick, the offense punts instead of turning the ball over), the opposing O would pickup some yards.

If they only picked up 10 yards, the SD D rank falls to 4th (just worse than Balt)
If they only picked up 20 yards, the SD D rank falls to 9th (just batter then Miami)
If they only picked up 30 yards, the SD D rank falls (this only I don't remember) somewhere around 17th.

Those missing drives are huge in the grand scheme of ranking by yardage.

First team with a losing record since post-merger being #1 in off and #1 in def.

I really wish that they'd stop judging teams based on the number of yards they get.

San Diego isn't the #1 team in terms of scoring and they aren't the #1 team in terms of points allowed.

San Diego is 5th in points scored and 19th in points allowed.

Anyways, They won't be scoring that much this weekend. Not with Floyd being out.

The NFL ranks offenses and defenses on yards which is stupid. It doesn't tell the whole story. The Chargers are 5th in points scored and 19th in points allowed per game.

Yet those ranking are ofen even more misleading. If the QB throws a pick-6 it counts as 6/7 points against the defense. If the defense scores a TD, the offense gets credited with 6/7 points.

Yup - and teams playing from behind tend to put up a lot of high passing numbers... they don't win, but it inflates their offensive stats

That being said, I've got a lot of respect for Rivers and his ability to strap a team to his back and fight for the win.

I think if we couldn't have Brady and I had to choose a new QB for my team, it would be him.

The stats for the Chargers are entirely bogus. They start dropping like a stone in both areas as the season progresses. Their opponents so far are a bunch of stiffs and the 9 sacks against the Cardinals is an absurdity. That defense will be lucky to sack Brady once and that offense is in for serious pain if the same Patriots show up that we saw in the 2nd half of the Fins game and the entire Ravens game. We know what a toe injury means and if Gates is out, Rivers becomes Chad Henne before our eyes.

Then there's Norv. Big games freak this guy out and he starts calling plays not to lose. I like the Pats on the road a lot this week.
