INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Updating How the Patriots Receivers Have Performed With Each Quarterback This Preseason
By: Ian Logue

Here's an entry updating last week's entry breaking down how each receiver performed with each quarterback....

Re: INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Updating How the Patriots Receivers Have Performed With Each

At what point do we start to worry about the lack of production of our rookie WRs in relation to Brady:

Receivers – Total Stats Through Two Games:

Danny Amendola: 7-of-8 for 77 yards, 1 TD, 4 first downs
Kenbrell Thompkins: 4-of-4 for 23 yards, 2 first downs
Shane Vereen: 3-of-3 for 28 yards, 1 TD, 2 first downs
Aaron Dobson: 1-of-1 for 23 yards, 1 first down
Julian Edelman: 1-of-1 for 4 yards, 1 first down
Josh Boyce: 1 of-1 for 5 yards
LeGarrette Blount: 1-of-1 for 12 yards, 1 first down
Stevan Ridley: 0-of-1

I'm not pushing any panic button yet but I would have liked to see Brady to Dobson/Boyce a little more than that. Hopefully Brady will spread things about a little more in games 3 and/or 4.

Re: INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Updating How the Patriots Receivers Have Performed With Each

Not correct:

Worth Noting: Tebow has yet to convert a passing first down through four quarters of play, and only has one 3rd down conversion in total, which came on a third quarter run for 12 yards during the Philadelphia game. He also has 0 Red Zone Attempts Through Two Games.

In the Eagles game, Tebow held the ball (surprise), rolled to his left, and hit the receiver for a first down.

It's kind of hard to do that when he's only out there for one or two drives. I expect the production to pick up the rooky WRs in the next two games.

You're correct, it should have read this way - which unfortunately is true:

"Worth Noting: Tebow has yet to convert a passing first down on 3rd down through just over four quarters of play, and only has two 3rd down conversions in total, which came on a third quarter run by himself for 12 yards during the Philadelphia game, and a fourth quarter run by Brandon Bolden last Friday. He also has 0 Red Zone Attempts Through Two Games."

Ian – This is awesome; thank you for taking the time to put it together, I have actually never seen this type of receiver by receiver breakdown before and given the new additions we have in the receiving corps this is a great read :youtheman:

In my view the time that Brady was on the field was geared differently in games 1 and 2; it appear that in game 1 Brady was focused on working with the outside receivers which is why Thompkins and Dobson (to a lesser degree) were a lot more involved, in game 2 Brady appeared to focus on his middle of the field and underneath receivers (Amendola, Sudfeld, Vereen, etc.). I’m not sure if this was by design or not; another possibility is that with Brady’s knee issue earlier in the week they felt it was best not to have him spend time in the pocket waiting for the outside receiving plays to develop and risk taking a hit.

I anticipate that this week with Brady likely to play 2 quarters we will see him put both the inside and outside attacks together, and we will be able to better evaluate his trust in the rookie receivers, I did get the opinion in game 1 that Brady did seem to trust Thompkins and Dobson more than Boyce, I’m not sure if that was the circumstance of that game though or a reality.

sloooooooooow down chief, move your hand away from teh big red button.

You are talking about almost 2 quarters with brady and the numbers expanding to cover 4 quarters

Danny Amendola 14/16 154 2td
Kenbrell thompkis 8/8 46 yards
Aaron Dobson 2/2 46 yards
Josh Boyce 2/2 10 yards
And Blount 2/2 24 yards

28/30 280 yards 2td's

Thats a pretty decent game by other quarterback standards, factor in vereen(58 yards 2 tds) Edelman(8 yards) and you have a 300+ yard game, 4tds. thats very brady like.

The depth chart is looking DA number 1 Thompkins # 2 and Dobson # 3
So just off the first year guys brady would account for

Trust me, I wasn't worrying about Brady. We've become excited by our rookie receivers from camp reports but I'm just noting that that isn't really translating to the playing field yet. Like I said I'm not pushing a panic button, just noting that so far, it's not ideal production from our rookies. I do appreciate that it's a small sample size though.

Re: INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Updating How the Patriots Receivers Have Performed With Each

Its a very good breakdown...and Brady makes 99% of all receivers look good.

Re: INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Updating How the Patriots Receivers Have Performed With Each

Good stuff thanx Ian

The 2 pointer from TB to Studfeld doesn't get counted? Never noticed that before, you'd think it'd at least be listed as a completion, strange.

expanding out based on 2 preseason games you are looking at the 3 rookie recievers getting a combined 32(dobson)+32(boyce)+ 128(thompkins)

Thats almost 200 receptions for the 3 their rookie season, + whatever Stud adds.

Thats a hell of a lot of production, and i doubt amendola is going to get that many targets every game so i would expect to see about 220-230 receptions by our rookies this year by the end of the regular season.

That to me looks pretty good. We will know more after this weeks game when brady sees some extending action.

Yeah, it's odd - they don't count that or the attempt by the QB on that stat. Another fun fact, the league also scores a touchdown as a "first down", which I also learned as I was building the database.

If/when it carries over to the regular season. Brady has played a handful of drives. On one of them, he didn't throw the ball even once, and on others he's thrown the ball only a couple times. There are three guys who have seen a significant number of targets. Way too early to read into it.

I agree. The most important thing is that every one of those guys have caught passes on the few drives he's been out there and they weren't incompletions. Tough to read too much into about one quarter or so of play in each game.
