Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Or, as former Red Sox GM Lou "What would we do with Willie McGee?" Gorman has said: "The sun will rise, the sun will set, and tomorrow I'll have lunch."

And a bourbon Manhattan or two. I know, I used to work at Jimmy's.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

If the Pats go after Seward now, it shows their hand and forces other teams considering him to come forward.

FWIW - If Seward signs a tender offer from the Patriots, then it does not matter what the other teams do. Once Seward signs a tender offer from a different team, he is going to play under that contract for that team or for the Panthers if they decide to match. That is, once Seward signs the tender offer, the Pats do not have to worry about a team with even more cap space than them outbidding them for Seward.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

FWIW - Seward counts against the Panthers' cap right now to the tune of $927,000. He counts zero against the Patriots' cap right now. That difference gives the Panthers a cap advantage.

Example,if Seward were to sign a tender offer with the Pats that would make his 2008 cap number $3,000,000 the net cap effect for the Patriots would be $2,630,000 (3,000,000 minus 370,000 - the salary of the player with the 51st highest cap number). If the Panthers were to match it would cost them an extra $2,073,000 on their cap.

Can someone please tell me who are all these players that the Panthers are going to sign between now and April 18 that is going to cause the Panthers to use so much cap space that they will not be able to match an offer??

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

It's not just the cap hit in the current year. My understanding is that there are lots of creative ways to make it difficult for a team to match.

FWIW - I know about those ways. I am replying to those who posted:
"They may wait until the Panthers spend more money and come closer to their salary cap.BINGO! We have a winner.
That how you make it hard for them to match (and Pats then don't have to overpay for him with an outrageous contract). Wait til they have spent most of their cap.I am glad someone was paying attention in class."

That's why you're the master and we're the pupils.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

They're probably just considering their options. Haggans is still out there, I was just reading that the Patriots are one of several teams interested in Takeo Spikes for whom winning is said to be important ("Spikes wants to get a ring, that's what someone told me who knows him well" per Adam Caplan). I suspect they may make an offer to Seward if no other options come through.

I say that Seward is still an option. Other than the Ken Dorsey VS. Glen Dorsey maybe it makes sense.

I think what the issue is for the Pats is market price. Maybe the agent's idea of a fair deal differs from the Patriot's view. With no one else interested at this point and the longer Seward is free, his asking price drops.

Thanks, Miguel. Didn't know that.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Think that Griesen isnt quite in the league of Seward, but I dont think he'd be able to command more than $2 million a year.

True. Another flaw in my theory is that Griesen was an UFA and Seward is a RFA.

Wasn't there an agreement not to insert clauses like: He earns an immediate bonus equal to the GDP of all countries with mountain peaks higher than 12,000 feet if he plays four games in a state with either North or South in its name? I know the NFL was considering cleaning up the poison pill loopholes.

No such agreement was ever made. While the NFL thought about cleaning up the poison pill loopholes, they never actually did anything about them.

Because they can't, as such matters are the subject to collective bargaining. The union isn't going to concede such a point unless they receive something in return.

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

Why is this thread still active?

Re: Pats to host ILB Adam Seward tomorrow

I think more news of Seward is in our future.
Just a hunch.
