According to Spotrac, the Raiders have just more than $50 million in dead money on their cap this year. That's nearly half their cap committed to players who will not suit up and play a down for them this season. The 51 largest contracts on their active roster that occupy the remainder of their salary cap space use only a combined $66.5 million; remove Darren McFadden, Sebastian Janikowski, and Matt Flynn from the equation, and the ghosts of players who were released from the Oakland roster will tie up more cap space on Oakland's ledger in 2013 than the players who are actually left suiting up in silver and black.

Take a look at the list of those guys and you get an idea of what went wrong in Oakland. First, there are the misguided trades of high draft picks for veterans, deals that yielded the now-departed Carson Palmer and Richard Seymour. The picks the Raiders traded away eventually produced Nate Solder, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Gio Bernard for the Patriots and Bengals.

Ouch! The Raiders are a mess and that is true on multiple fronts (from the cap to calling home the worst POS stadium there is....and they have to share that with MLB).

In fairness to the current Raiders' regime, a shift in strategy/moving away from the Al Davis modus operandi is/has occurred. A lot of the dead money is probably due to this shift. The post Al Raiders look to be a very different organization. Whether that means better/leads to greater success is ????.

The Raiders are trying to get out of the mess that Al Davis put them in. They have released a lot of the misstakes he did. I think they will have quite a lot of cap room next year.

Edit: By releasing the bad draft picks and pick ups that Al Davis had the Bonuses are counted on the cap room faster I beleive, which gives them cap hell now. But a much better future.

Best-Case Scenario: The Jets get off to a hot start before fizzling out, but Ryan's reputation is restored to the point where he gets a contract extension. The Jets actually use the ashes of the Sanchez deal as the recycled paper for Ryan's extension. They cut Sanchez after the season and have a ceremony so that the door can literally hit him on the ass on the way out.

Worst-Case Scenario: Ryan quits or gets fired early, and Smith does just enough on offense to win the Jets seven games and prevent them from continuing to rebuild with a top-five pick. The infamous snowball game makes its return, but instead of pegging the other team, everybody tries to throw at Sanchez.

I was sad to see Al Divs pass on.... if he was still around and running the show BB could have fleeced him a few more times, and put them in even worse shape.

Barnwell's Best Case Scenario is actually the Jets Worst Cast Scenario. The Best Case Scenario is that the Jets go 1-15, giving Idzik Carte Blanche to fire Ryan and get rid of everyone and the first pick in the draft.

The worst part of it is that the Raiders weren't ever very good, even while spending themselves into this cap hell. If you're going to cause a cap situation in the future, at least get yourselves 2 or 3 good seasons to make it worth it. Even the Jets scraped out two AFC championship appearances before things went south.

That's nuts, but it's the right move for the new management. McKenzie arrived to a **** sandwich, and you can either get rid of it as quickly as possible and try to bottom out for the likes of Clowney/Bridgewater in the process, or you can let it hamstring you for a number of years and fight to get to .500.

And they'll have to, seeing as they only have 32 players under contract for next year. Only the Bears, with 28, have fewer. Not coincidentally, the Patriots also have the most players under contract, with 50, but are only 13th in terms of total cap hits.
