I agree that Ted Washington would be in the conversation but three of the top 5 played for The San Francisco 49ers at the same time.They were Michael Carter,Jim Burt,and Fred Smerlas.I'll add Vince Wilfork to complete my five.

I don't know where he ranks, but Joe Klecko in his prime was devastating as a NT.

Pillman's dead, man, and has been for like 10 years.

The Big Show would be quite the scene, but how athletic is he? I don't claim to be a wrestling fan, though I know who the guy is, and I'm sure he makes more money in the WWF than he would in the NFL.

To be honest, even with Klecko and Smerlas, who both played NT but very differently than in the BB 3-4 defense, I'd still take Ted Washington seven days a week and twice on Sunday. Even at a very advanced age, he's one of the better ones in the league. When he was with the Bills, he was unbelievable. People forget just how athletic he was back in the mid-90s for a guy who probably weighed around 400 lbs.

Interesting that the 2 most popular on the board -- Washington, Smerlas -- plus my addition of Pat Williams, were all former Bills they let get away for nothing. Except for the Polian years, probably the worst front office ever. Care to take Bledsoe or Milloy off our hands for some 1st round draft picks?


For my taste, Smerlas was a little on the light side to play 3-4 nose at a level to be on the short list. I think he only went about 280, even if they listed him at 300. Bruce Smith (the one Bill I'd really want on our defense) said he was 260 but the league kept listing him at 285. If Polian weren't there when Smith was a Bill we probably could have gotten him for Steve Grogan!
