If Jimmy Looks a Franchise QB, Would You Trade Brady?

BB has never had an issue trading anyone!

True but IMO there are certain exceptions. Bruschi comes to mind. His last camp and preseason he had absolutely nothing left. But Bill didn't seem like he was going to cut him. He let him walk away on his own terms and called him "the perfect player". I feel like Brady definitely falls into Bill's once in a lifetime player category and he would do the same for him.

Strongly disagree. And how can you open a thread and ask about trading TB then say Jimmy won't be here past this season.

My response takes into play your hypothetical that Jimmy is s franchise QB. If thats the case you hold him as long as you can. After 2 seasons you franchise him and either he's your guy and Brady retires or gets traded or if you think TB still has years left you franchise and trade Jimmy.

OK, I will make this simple. I have real doubt that Jimmy stays around to be a six year back up. I also have doubts that we will pay him his market value if he is franchise level (big if, only Bill will know) Therefore, he will be gone at the end of the year, hence Brissett coming in as QB3. Someone will walk as that won't be the case for the next few years.

If you have a franchise QB as back up, a proper succession plan will need to happen. Hardly any QB's are franchise material, getting one isn't a case of going to Wallmart so tough decisions may need to be made.

Not even the worst GM in the world will just let things meander until Brady retires and hopes for the best.

That isn't outlandish.

I think that if Jimmy looks like the next franchise quarterback, you're out of your mind if you don't at least consider it. Brady will be 40 and, while he's still playing like the GOAT, he more than likely won't be playing like that much longer. But this is only IF Garoppolo looks like the next franchise QB. He's having a good camp, but that remains to be seen.

It's a legitimate question you posed. There are too many people (understandably so) who are emotionally attached to brady. You take the emotion out of it and it's a real question.

The question is: What kind of return could you get for Brady. I mean, let's say that JG is going to be a pro-bowl QB for years to come. Say BB was 95% convinced of it. What could he get for Brady?

Obviously a first round pick would be absolute minimum. But for a guy like Brady, who instantly makes your team a contender, I'd imagine you could get at least two first round picks, and probably even more, despite his age.

So if someone offered you the insane package of two firsts (2017, 2018) and two seconds (2017, 2018) for Brady, would you do it, IF you were convinced that JG was going to be great?

You'd be insane to not at least consider it.

Who would have thought a thread like this would have got tensions to rise.....

Jerod Mayo is a more recent example. It was clear after the last injury that he couldn't get up to snuff, so he was kept around as a "coach/cheerleader" of sorts simply because of his leadership. Perhaps if he was put on the trade market, the returns would be lousy, but that never happened for him.

Nope. Jimmy isn't our longterm QB. Brady plays for between 3-5 more seasons (including this one) and then either Jacoby or the next guy up takes the reins.

The thing is, teams would look at BB trading Brady and they'd wonder "what does he know?". It's unlikely any team would offer that for a 40 year old QB that his HC has decided to trade.

My question to the OP is......when exactly would be the time to determine when JG "looks like a franchise QB"? Would it be Week 1? Would it be Week 4? Because even after 4 games there would still be a small sample size of games to say he looks good or not. I would venture to say you need an entire season to truly evaluate things.

I say it is up to Bill. I made that clear. Bill will see Jimmy every day and will have a better grasp than me or you on whether he thinks he is capable, or whether he is just a good QB. He probably has an idea now, without these four games to look at. We will have seen so little that our opinions are almost worthless in comparison.

I don't think he'll look like a "franchise QB" in his first 4 games of his career against 4 fairly tough defenses.

I can see the defense winning a game or two and the loaded offense carrying Garoppolo in at least one other.

Bill will likely have his opinion already, irrespective of these four games, which as you said, could be softer.

Yeah, this board is prone to hysteria at times...threads like this bring the fan bois out to play.

I'll confess that Goodell has made me one, in that I want Brady to stay here and break every record and then come what may after. The timing sucks with JG if he is indeed franchise-worthy, in that it would be better if he was a rookie now for that. Whatcha gonna do though.

But see, here's the thing. I'm sure that most of us believe that JG has something in him, and that with the pieces on offense in place, his rate of success should be higher than someone else who may be in the same situation. And so far in practices, he looks the part. But if he knows already, why isn't he trading Brady now? I think that's the problem most folks have with this idea.

It is a tough one! I will be watching the Pats even if they go bad again....I would just rather they be good! haha

So many options...Brady is still better now and the decision can wait...BB doesn't think JG is successor material, BB sees this as a four year plan where he has time...no idea!

BB recently had a press conference which made his position pretty clear. Your thread, in light of that, seems trollish.

He said there was no controversy in week 5....which there won't be. I am talking longer term

Why would they have extended Tom though if moving on from him was in consideration? That's why I think they'll capitalise on Jimmy's success and get quality draft picks for him, which could be a fair haul in your scenario, and continue with Brady.
i'm not saying that this is why they extended him, but an extension makes him more valuable in a trade. you can get a lot more for a guy who has multiple years left on his contract vs. a 1-year rental.
